Equal Ice

I’m a performer, but I don’t act on a regular stage. I dress up in costumes, but I don’t play a character. My stage isn’t one in a theater; it’s clean slick ice at a rink. I don’t play a character, I’m just myself. Sometimes on the ice though, I feel like I’m someone else. Someone who is graceful and beautiful, it’s still me though, just a different side of me. A side that I like much more than my everyday self. Ice skating is much more work than people may think though, and some people don’t consider it a sport. It’s not as extreme as hockey for example. I may not look very tough, but I can accelerate faster than the guys on the racetrack. I take harder impacts than a rider being thrown from a bull. And I handle more G-Force than a fighter pilot. So why just be extreme, when you can be extremely graceful.

Chapter 53

Harry’s POV

I left Gabrielle’s house with quite an obvious smile plastered onto my face. I knew my aunt noticed my giddy smile last time I came home with one, but this time I was going to hide it. I was just going to tell her that Gabrielle would be coming over for dinner at some point, and just leave it at that. I still couldn’t shake the thought of what her reaction would be when she saw that the girl I was bringing over for dinner was a figure skater which, might I add, she already knew pretty well.

I’m not really sure who or what type of girl she is expecting me to be bringing over. Surely she should guess that it would probably be someone from the rink because there and the buffet have been where I spent most of my time the first few weeks I was living here.

I turned the radio in my car on in attempts to drown out my thoughts for a while as I drove back to my aunt’s house.

The music helped somewhat but I was still stuck with my own thoughts. I wasn’t sure how I was going to get to sleep tonight since the rambling thoughts in my mind wouldn’t stop. I guess I cold say know that I understand most of Gabrielle’s stress, but hers has got to be a lot worse I’m guessing.

I soon arrived back at my aunt’s house and I knew she was awake still because I had made it home a little earlier than I have lately.

I was hoping that Ben was still up so maybe I could get out of discussing everything and just go straight to bed before Ben did. I knew there really was no way to avoid it all because my aunt is going to talk to me tomorrow, and I knew it was easier to talk to her now so I wouldn’t have to worry about it, but I still wanted to put it off until tomorrow. I parked my car in the driveway and took the keys out before getting out of the car.

When I walked in, I didn’t hear my aunt ask if it was me like she usually did so I decided to just head on to my room. As I was about to walk into the living room since I needed to go through it to get to my room, I saw the TV on and my aunt and Ben sitting on the couch watching something I’d never seen before.

As I glanced over at them again, I noticed there was someone else sitting on the couch with them too. I made myself stop staring as I tried to think of who would be here and I tried my best to sneak past them but of course Ben had to turn around at that moment and if I hadn’t had that moment of staring at the back of the unknown head, I probably would’ve made it back to my room.

“Harry!” Ben said once he had turned around and saw me.

“Hey Ben,” I smiled back at him and then turned to watch as my aunt and the mystery figure paused the TV and began to turn around as well.

I wasn’t exactly prepared to see my coach being the person that was sitting on the couch next my aunt, but there was no way I could deny he was here because I could see him now on my couch, my shocked stare locked on him.

“Nice to see you Harry,” my coach eventually said, probably having enough of me staring at him.

I wasn’t trying to be rude; I just didn’t expect to see him here when I got home. At first I had hardly even recognized him with out his red baseball hat on which he wears all of the time.

“Hey coach,” I answered with a nod, not exactly sure what to say.

My aunt has obviously told Ben that she is dating now, and it doesn’t seem to bother him at all which is a good thing. I noticed my aunt whisper something into my coach’s ear before she got up and walked over to me.

“Can we talk in the kitchen?” she asked him, and I nodded before following her into the kitchen.

This conversation was going to go in either two ways, either she’s going to tell me why my coach is here and all that, or she is going to ask me about Gabrielle.

“So did you ask her?” she asked me, choosing to ignore me seeing my coach here completely, but I guess that’s a good thing.

“Yeah, she’s coming this weekend,” I informed her.

“Excellent, I’ll start getting everything planned,” she said excitedly, and I went ahead and told her that Gabrielle was going to have to have an early dinner with us so she could be home by a certain time, but that didn’t seem to bother her plans one bit.

“So will it be okay if Ben joins us at dinner? If not I could probably find a babysitter for him,” she said, which was just the beginning of her endless questions.

After answering most of her questions and assuring her that Ben could stay, I was pretty sure she was done with questions. I wanted to tell her that Gabrielle would love it if Ben had dinner with us because she already knows him and her, but I knew that’d be crossing it for Gabrielle right now.

“Okay, one last question and then I’ll let you get your beauty rest,” she joked and I just rolled my eyes at her.

“What’s the question?” I asked. “What’s her name? I think it’s about time you told me, and I think it’d be a bit embarrassing for me to ask her name when she comes over because I bet she suspects you would’ve told me,” she said.

‘Highly doubtful’ I told myself, but wasn’t going to say it out loud.

“Gabi,” I said, using the shorten version of her name because I was pretty sure, like me, my aunt called her Gabrielle as well so this would lead her away from thinking it was Gabrielle the figure skater from the rink until she actually came over.

“Gabi,” she repeated, “Sweet name, well I’m done for now so you can go ahead and go now,” she told me as she began to walk with me out of the kitchen.

“Oh, one more thing,” she said, stopping me just as I was about to open the door to leave the kitchen.

“I thought we were done with questions,”

“This is about something different though,” she told me and I went ahead and motioned for her to continue.

“I need you to take Ben to the park tomorrow for his play date with Sam. I have to work a bit longer tomorrow and then go to the grocery store to buy some things for dinner this weekend,” she said.

“Okay,” I told her, and she thanked me for helping her out before I finally walked out of the kitchen and headed to my room.

After I had walked into my room I quickly got ready and changed before pulling the covers back and getting into bed.

As my wondering thoughts made reappearance as I tried to go to sleep, I began to wonder if my coach was still in the house. He was still here when I went into the kitchen because I knew we wouldn’t have left without telling my aunt. It was still so weird knowing that my coach was dating my aunt and is probably still here with her.

I made a mental note to myself to call Gabrielle tomorrow since I felt like talking about it and wanted to be confirmed that I wasn’t the only one who thought this whole thing with my aunt and coach is a bit strange but still nice.

I remembered that I needed to call her tomorrow anyway to tell her that I wasn’t positive that I could make it to her house tomorrow because I had to go with Ben to the park and I never know how long that it going to last. I was thankful when began to feel myself start to fall asleep, all my thoughts leaving until I woke up the next morning.
