Equal Ice

I’m a performer, but I don’t act on a regular stage.
I dress up in costumes, but I don’t play a character.
My stage isn’t one in a theater; it’s clean slick ice at a rink.
I don’t play a character, I’m just myself.
Sometimes on the ice though, I feel like I’m someone else. Someone who is graceful and beautiful, it’s still me though, just a different side of me. A side that I like much more than my everyday self.
Ice skating is much more work than people may think though, and some people don’t consider it a sport. It’s not as extreme as hockey for example.
I may not look very tough, but I can accelerate faster than the guys on the racetrack.
I take harder impacts than a rider being thrown from a bull.
And I handle more G-Force than a fighter pilot.
So why just be extreme, when you can be extremely graceful.

Chapter 36

Gabrielle’s POV

“Well, here we are,” Harry said as he pulled up in his usual spot across the street.

“Yep,” I said, not wanting to get out of the car, but knowing I had to.

“I’d offer to walk you up but…” he trailed off as we both looked at my dad’s car that was now parked in the driveway.

“Um, I can walk you halfway across the street, if you’d like,” he offered.

I looked over a smiled at him, and he told me to stay where I was as he got out of the car. I saw him quickly run around the front of us car to get over to my side and he opened my door once he was over here. I gave him a small laugh as I stepped out of the car and onto the ground as he shut the door behind me.

After he shut the door, he doesn’t move and I’m stuck with him in front of me and my back to his car. I’m a bit intimidated by how close he is to me right now, and I’m even more taken back when I feel his lips settle upon mine. His lips are gentle with mine, slow even as he takes my top lip between his own. My arms are still at my side, but his have moved to my waist, and I feel his fingers squeezing there and my heartbeat fastens in my chest.

After a few more moments, I hesitantly pulled away.

“What’s wrong?” he asked me, obviously upset that I ended the moment.

“My dad,” I whispered, “I got to get inside the house,”

He frowned, but nodded understandingly as he stepped back to let me walk back around his truck. I gave him a quick wave as I ran across the street. He returned the gesture with just a small move of his hand as he walked back to the driver’s side of the car. I had to calm myself from the giddy state I was in when I walked inside my house.

“You home Gabi?” my dad called out once I opened the door and closed it behind me.

“Yeah dad,” I said as I made my way to the kitchen where I guess he probably was.

“Been out all day?” he asked me, “You’re usually home when I get home,”

“Yeah, no point in just sitting at home today,” I told him.

“So did you not buy anything?” he asked me, and I looked down and completely forgot that I had told him I was shopping with Bella.

“I mean you’ve been shopping almost all day,” he added.

“Oh, no, I bought a shirt. We, um came back here to drop it off and then headed back out,” I tried to explain in a lie that didn’t sound very believable to me, but obviously not to my dad.

“Okay well, there is still some lasagna left if you want that,” he told me.

“No it’s fine, Bella and I actually went out to eat after we dropped off our bags, we went to Banderas so that’s why I’m home late,” I said since he knows that Banderas is a somewhat far drive from here.

“Banderas? You two could afford that on your own?” he asked, somewhat shocked.

“We put our money together, I just got my allowance remember?” I was cursing myself out in my head though for forgetting how expensive Banderas could end up being.

I feel even more bad for not protesting about harry paying for it all. At the time I was so mesmerized by him that I didn’t think to help pay at all, since he was so set on this being a date. Then again by that time of the night, so was I. I was happy I didn’t get my regular meal though because the salmon is much more expensive then the pasta I decided to get tonight.

I knew I had to stop beating myself up for it because there’s nothing I could do about it. I soon walked with my dad into the living room once he finished his dinner, and I watched the news with him for a while until I decided to head up to bed.

Harry’s POV

The whole drive back to my aunt’s house I had a stupid grin on my face that I couldn’t wipe away. It was there as I was driving, staying on the correct side of the road, and it was still there when I arrived back in my aunt’s driveway. I pulled up on the driveway and parked my car before getting out. I saw most of the lights still on from the outside of the house, so I knew that my aunt was probably still up. She was most likely waiting up to hear about what happened tonight.

She was so excited for me when I was getting ready and then leaving. As I had been getting ready she kept coming into my room to make sure I still looked presentable, and then she chose the outfit that she wanted me to wear. Normally I might just ignore her judgment and wear what I wanted to, but I did like what she had picked out and I probably did need the judgment from a girl of what to wear. I was biting back my smile as I walked up the front porch and then inside my aunt’s house.

“Harry?” I heard my aunt call just as I walked inside.

“Yeah,” I said as I took the blazer I was wearing off.

“Get in here,” I heard her say, and I laughed as I walked into the kitchen where I heard her voice coming from.

“So,” she dragged out as she slid a coffee mug on the counter in my direction.

“So?” I challenged as I sat down at the counter grabbed the mug that seem to be filled with tea.

“It was okay,” I shrugged and took a sip of the tea as she gave me an annoyed and unconvinced look.

“What?” I asked.

“Harry I know you well enough to know that there is more that you want to tell me, so spill. I’m still mad that you wouldn’t tell me her name so the least you can do is tell me how it went,” she said, trying to give me a small guilt trip about not telling her the name, because was pretty annoyed earlier today that I wouldn’t tell her.

“It was great,” I told her.

“Harry you’ve had the same goofy grin on your face ever since you walked in here, you and I both know that it wasn’t just ‘ great,’” she said, and that stupid grin on my face became even more evident the more I tried to hide it.

“I want to hear everything,” she told me, and I finally gave in and began to speak up.

I was being as careful as I could with what I was saying because I didn’t want to accidently slip up and say her name or something that might lead my aunt on to it being her. I really wanted to tell her it was Gabrielle since she knows her and likes her, but I was still too nervous to.

Plus what if Gabrielle didn’t want me to say anything, I didn’t want to tell my aunt and have it some how get out to Gabrielle’s dad. I didn’t know how close the two families were, because Gabrielle seems to know my aunt and Ben well, but I don’t know about her dad. She would probably kill me if I told my aunt, and she mentions something to her dad.

As I continued to tell my aunt about the night, I started to feel like I was talking to a teenage girl instead of a grown woman, as she would make little squeals when I would say something. Most of it came from just small gestures that I did, but she really let out her excitement when I had told her that I had kissed Gabrielle before she headed up to her house.

I just rolled my eyes at my aunt every time she made an obnoxious noise, but as I was going over the night and reminding myself of everything, I was practically squealing with excitement on the inside, and I hoped Gabrielle was as giddy about the night as I was.
