Equal Ice

I’m a performer, but I don’t act on a regular stage. I dress up in costumes, but I don’t play a character. My stage isn’t one in a theater; it’s clean slick ice at a rink. I don’t play a character, I’m just myself. Sometimes on the ice though, I feel like I’m someone else. Someone who is graceful and beautiful, it’s still me though, just a different side of me. A side that I like much more than my everyday self. Ice skating is much more work than people may think though, and some people don’t consider it a sport. It’s not as extreme as hockey for example. I may not look very tough, but I can accelerate faster than the guys on the racetrack. I take harder impacts than a rider being thrown from a bull. And I handle more G-Force than a fighter pilot. So why just be extreme, when you can be extremely graceful.

Chapter 14

Gabrielle’s POV

Once I had finished eating, I threw away the container that the turkey wrap was in, and then headed over to the private rinks. I opened the door that walked into the first rink that I almost always skate in.

As I was walking over to the next door, I watched a curling team in the middle of their practice. I’ve never understood the point of that sport, but if it works for them, it doesn’t really matter to me.

I continued to walk through the rink until I reached the next door that led to the rink that was currently Bella’s. As I opened the door and walked inside, I saw Bella skating through what I assume is her routine, I wouldn’t know since I hadn’t seen it yet. She gave me a quick smile when she saw that I had arrived back, and I returned the smile even though she probably didn’t see. I walked over to the bleachers, and set my bag down, and then watched Bella skate.

After a few moments of watching, it occurred to me that I should probably go ahead and put on my skates since Bella wanted me to skate on her rink with her for a while. I didn’t always get to free skate very much anymore, so I was happy she offered to let me skate on her rink. Since it wasn’t my practice time and neither of our parents were here, we could basically skate around and practice whatever we wanted too.

I guess in this situation my dad would be fine with it because I’ll be getting extra skating in, but Bella’s mom would want Bella to be doing her routine right now. I was going to mention that to Bella, but I decided not to, she’ll have plenty of time today when her mom gets back to practice her routine. I slipped on both for my skates, and laced them up. I was being sure to lace them up the way I usually do that almost always prevents knots. I guess yesterday I wasn’t paying attention, or messed it up and just didn’t notice.

Once my skates were on and laced up, I zipped my bag back up, and carefully walked on my skates over to the rink. I forgot to take out my guards to put on my skates so it wasn’t as easy to walk, but I could still do it. I began opening the small door that led to the ice, and Bella skated over to me once she saw I was coming into the rink.

Once I was on the rink, I closed the small door, and then we both began to skate all across the ice. We would both occasionally do a Lutz or some other quick stuff from our routines, but for the most part we were both just skating.

Whether I’m practicing and training, or just skating for fun, gliding on the ice is still one of the most freeing feelings ever. Even more so when I am just skating for fun, skating because I can. Not having to worry about messing up my skating and being criticized by my dad, I can just skate, and if I make a mistake then so be it, it doesn’t matter at the moment.

Bella and I probably skated around on her rink for about an hour before I finally decided to take a break. My practice time was going to start soon and I wanted to save some of my energy for what I was supposed to be doing on the ice, which is practicing my routine. I went to sit down at the bleachers to take my skates off and put them back in my bag. I got up and grabbed my bag and said bye to Bella before heading out of her rink. I opened up the door that led to my rink, and saw the curling team still practicing.

I sighed and walked across the walkway and back to the lobby of the building. I sat down in one of the lounge areas for the ten minutes I had to wait for it to be my time at the private rink. The ten minutes felt like hours, and I was so relieved when I saw the familiar group of people with curling gear walking out of the rink and into the lobby. I swiftly got up from the couch I was sitting on and carried my bag with me to the rink.

Once I was inside through the doors, I sat down on the bleachers and once again put my skates back on. I knew I could’ve just kept them on from when I was skating at Bella’s rink, but it was just easier to walk from the rinks to the lobby and back to the rink in my regular shoes. I took my skates back out of my bag and put them on and laced them up.

I took my water bottle and skate guards out too and set them aside to have them out already for when I needed them. I stepped over to the ice, and once I opened the door and was on the ice, I began to start skating. As I was skating to the middle of the rink, I realized that I had forgotten to bring my music to play that goes with my routine.

I decided not to complain to myself about it and just do what I did yesterday and remember as much of it as I could and mentally play the music in my head. Thankfully since I’ve been practicing to that certain music so much, I could remember most of the tune from beginning to end, and at what points in the song that I had to do a certain move like a Lutz or something.

After my however many hours of skating were over, I headed off the rink and to the bleachers were Bella and her mom were waiting for me. Bella’s mom had arrived back here probably two hours after Bella and I had begun skating. As I was sitting down next to Bella to take my skates off, I heard the door fling open along with the laughing and chatter of the familiar group of boys. Once I looked up and knew for sure that it was them, I began to unlace my skates quicker than I had been.

“Don’t let your laces get in a knot again,” I heard Zack yell to me as he stepped onto the rink.

“I don’t want to lose another ten minutes of practice like we did yesterday because of your stupid figure skate,” he told me, and of course the rest of the boys started laughing.

I just rolled my eyes at them as I took of my skates and put them both in the bag. Neither Bella nor me were up to arguing with them again, so we both just got up from the bleachers and left once I was ready.

“It’s only a matter of time before they corrupt the new guy too and then we’ll have another person that pisses me off,” Bella said once we were in the lobby.

“Bella, don’t make me start a swear jar,” her mom told her.

“Sorry,” Bella scoffed,

“Now back on topic please, I bet in the next week or two that new guy is going to be just like the rest of them,” Bella said.

“Bella you can’t always assume the worst of people,” Bella’s mom said.

“Come on mom you know those guys, they are going to rub off on him, and I’m sure Gabrielle agrees with me, don’t you Gabi?” Bella said, and her and her mom both turned to face me.

“Well I don’t think he’s going to be as cruel as the rest of them,” I told her.

“Come on Gabi, just because you have a thing for the new guy doesn’t mean he’s all that,” Bella said.

“I wish you would stop saying that, I hardly even know the guy, much less have a thing for him,” I protested.

“Tell that to your eyes yesterday when they were glued to him,” she said.

“I just didn’t know who he was,” I defended.

“Whatever, I think you’re somewhat attracted to him,”

“Okay Bella, change the subject,” her mom said, finally cutting in.
