Harry and I had arrived at the rink a little around an hour ago. He had insisted that he watch me skate, but I had no problem with him wanting to watch today. My dad used to come down a lot and train with me, like giving me pointers and telling me how to improve.
While I will admit that sometimes he got a bit carried away with criticizing and critiquing everything, I have been beginning to miss him being here. He used to move up his lunch time earlier so he could come and watch me practice during his break, but now he doesn’t even do that anymore, he just skipped his lunch break completely now and just stayed at work.
I felt like I wasn’t improving as much as I used to be anymore because now I just have myself to keep me on track with my routine. I do have a personal trainer, but he’s been on vacation or something lately, visiting family in a different country, I wasn’t exactly sure where he was, but I was pretty sure that he was supposed to be back soon. Having to do all this by myself for the last month or so had really been throwing me off, but I still thought that I was doing pretty well.
While I was skating, Harry had just been quietly sitting on the bleachers watching me skate. I couldn’t tell from the look on his face if he thought I was skating good or skating bad. I really had no idea how much better or worse I had gotten since I’ve had that month off with the renovations, and now no dad coming to help me out.
Before I knew it though, Harry was calling me over, telling me that it was probably a good time for us to leave right now. I had told him when Bella usually came in here, and she was set to come through here in a less than five minutes, so I needed to hurry and get my skates off so the two of us could get out of here and into the lobby. Well I was going into the lobby, and Harry would be in there momentarily as he walked through it to the locker rooms where he would wait for his team to arrive.
Once I got my rental skates off and since I didn’t have a bag to put them in, I just carried them and then the two of us got up from the bleachers and began to walk out of the rink.
“You did a really good job skating,” Harry told me as we were walking.
“Really? Because I thought I didn’t do very well,” I told him honestly.
“Why on earth would you think that?” he asked me, almost surprised that I didn’t think I did well.
“I don’t know, I just feel like I’m further behind than I was a few months ago,” I answered.
“Don’t let one month off make you think that now you’re supposedly not as good as you were last month, you just need a couple days to get back on your feet and catch up with yourself,” he told me.
I guess he was right, the past two days here I didn’t feel like I was doing all that bad, but I guess now that I knew I actually had someone here watching me who had never seen be skate before, especially since that person was Harry, I felt self conscious I guess, I didn’t want him thinking that I was a bad skater. I knew I wasn’t a bad skater, but I just wish Harry would’ve come to watch me on a day when I was more relaxed about everything going on outside of the rink and after I’d had awhile to get more caught up and back to where I was before with my skating.
When we walked out of the rink, I of course noticed a few people looking at us, and not just normal glances people give other people regularly, they were full on staring at us. Some people were trying to do it subtly, and some people couldn’t care less if we caught them staring at us. I have been trying my best to ignore it all, but it just seemed to be getting worse.
I knew that Harry had to notice it too, but we both did our best to not acknowledge it. I really wished that people would just mind their own business and stay out of ours. I get that this is a big deal to some people, but those people really just need to keep it to themselves.
Luckily no one bothered to come up and talk to us or say something to us. This morning when we were walking in I heard a few unnecessary comments. They were probably the rudest comments that I had heard, mostly because Harry and I usually came to the rink alone, or for me I come with Bella, and Harry and I come at different times too. Today we came in together, and Bella was nowhere in sight, so obviously that got people talking.
“I should probably go to the locker room now,” Harry told me, and I nodded.
“I’ll just be waiting over there,” I told him and pointed to the lounge area where I usually go when I had to wait here for some reason, the place where I had my first real conversation with Harry and he gave me a ride home.
Now he was going to give me a ride home today, but for a completely different reason. We said bye and I walked over to one of the couches while he walked into the locker room.
I was actually kind of wishing that I could see him play hockey today since he watched me skate. I knew that would definitely not end up well considering everyone else who would be in that rink pretty much hated me. It was easy for Harry to watch me skate since no one else is ever in there. So here I was, having to wait out here for however long Harry’s practice was, I had no idea exactly how long it lasted.
Once I sat down on the couch I realized that I was still holding the skates that I had to borrow from the skate rentals today since all my stuff was at home, although it was hard to call it home right now since I wanted to be anywhere but there and luckily I was right now.
I got up from the couch and walked up to the desk where all the skates for people to borrow for the day were set up. I don’t think I had ever borrow skates from here before, and if I did it was a long time ago, so I really wasn’t sure what to do to make sure the skates got back to the people the way they were supposed to. There was currently no one at the desk right now so I wasn’t really sure what to do.
The few times that I have glanced over here though, I’ve seen people just leave the skates on the desk and then leave. I wasn’t sure if that was the correct thing to do, but I just went ahead and did it since I was tired of waiting for someone to come. I really should know what to do in this situation, but I really didn’t. I then went ahead and walked back over to the couches and sat down where I was before I got up.
A few minutes after I had sat back down, I heard some rather loud chatter coming in through the entrance of the rink, and I looked up and I of course saw none other than Zack and Adam walking in. I hoping that they did not notice me here, but considering that they had to walk passed where I was sitting, the odds were rather low in my favor.
“Look who it is,” I heard a voice I knew too well say, and I automatically knew without looking up that the voice was talking to me.
I did look up however, and I saw Zack and Adam standing in front of me, not really a surprise.
“Why are you here? Did your practice end?” Zack said,
“Just be happy she’s out on time today,” Adam added on and they both laughed.
I wanted to tell them that I do get out on time, they just get there to early, but I knew it was best to keep my mouth shut.
They continued on a small rampage of stupid little comments. I knew they were pointless comments, but some of them still got to me and bothered me.
“She’s probably just waiting for her boyfriend to finish up practice,” Zack said.
“Doesn’t she usually ride with Bella though? I don’t see Bella,” Adam commented, “And she doesn’t have a car to get here or leave herself” he added.
“I wonder who drove her here then?” Zack laughed.
“They probably went out for a romantic breakfast or shit after he picked her up,” Adam chuckled.
“Then Harry will skip the buffet and go on a romantic lunch date.”
They were speaking like little kids, and I couldn’t take it anymore.
Before I knew it I was on my feet, not knowing where I was headed to, but just wanting to get away from them.
“Where are you going? Was it something we said?” Zack called out after me, and then the two of them started laughing hysterically as I ran into the bathroom, which was the nearest place I could fine away from them.
