26. The Thing About Doorways...
Here's a doorway. It's common,
I see it every day.
I don't always love it,
and sometimes I'm going through the other way,
But every time I do I say 'Thank God...',
Because every other doorway in this building leads
To somewhere that isn't here.
The moment I walk through is the start of something,
And the moment I walk back out is the end of it.
It's a fun workout, but it's one that requires a lot of endurance.
I never didn't go through one way, but I sometimes postponed the other.
I remember wanting to talk, like the room was safety, like a mother.
It's something that to me, caused me to care.
I wanted order in here, which didn't matter out there.
I cleaned and organized and was always thanked,
Which I never understood; it was the maintenance of a home.
'Thanks for making sure that you're okay,' it was to me,
And it seemed as strange as saying that does today.
It was just the place I could think and be me.
This is the doorway to my old English class.
