Falling Friendship

Alice Arbler and Santana Swent have been BFFs for nine years! When 6th grade comes they expect it to be the same: them being BFFs. But sudden changes in the summer tell them nothing is going to be the same. Alice and Santana must find pathways that don't connect. But each time they think they did, everything crashes and they have to start over again. Everyone they like seems to like everyone the other girl likes. Can they find a social life by the end of the school year? Or will they be doomed to spend the rest of the middle school life unsteady and on a rocky road?

So, where were we? Oh yes she was getting changed. When Alice finished getting changed we curled up on her plush rug.

"Ok, so the options for music are: Band, strings, corus or musical theatre?" I read off of the sheet that my mom printed out for me.

"Band!" Alice squeels.

"What? Why?" I ask, we'd been planning to do musical theatre.

"Because. Musical theatre would be too competetative. And wouldn't it be cooler to be in band together? Right?" Alice jumped up and down on the bed.

"Oh, right! Me, playing electric guitar and you drums!" I play acustic guitar but, Joseph, my older brother has let me try electric and I was good at it. Alice has an AWESOME drum set in her garage.

"See?" Alice teased as we copied this down in our notebooks. "OK, after-school sports teams (optional): volleyball, soccer, tennis, softball, track and field, swim. Do we want to do this?" Alice looks up from the paper.

"Um, YEAH! Earth to Alice! OF COURSE WE WANT TO DO THIS! Remember, we plan on doing doubles, IN TENNIS!" I kinda loose it.

"Oh, right, well I kinda wanted to do soccer, to 'step it up'." Alice mumbled.

"But Alice..." I whine.

"Look, if you want to do tennis that's fine with me, I'll do both." Alice puts her hands out in defence.

"And I'll do both too." I say bravely.

"But Santana, think about it..." Alice started and then stopped afraid to say more.

"Are you serious, Alice? You don't want your BFF to be on a soccer team? Really?" I say stunned.

"Well, we wouldn't be on the team... And you would be a beginner... And-"

"So what?" I interject.

"-It would be embarrassing." Alice finished.

"OK, I get it." I say sarcastically. But Alice doesn't have such a strong sarcasm radar.

"Really? You understand?" she asks, a sliver of hope in her voice.

"Jeez girl, get a hold a' yo'self! Nada, I do not understand." we crack up into giggles. Little did we know that the little incident was uncovering the largest incident know to BFF-kind.
