16. 17th

Jason sat in the corner of the bathroom, hands covering his face as he rested his elbows on his knees. The shower was on, soaking his plaid button up shirt and jeans as he sulked. Today was his 17th birthday, and it wasn't the best day. If there was something no one--except Justin--knew, is that they weren't only celebrating Jason's birthday. It was also the day the only person who actually loved and cared for them, died. Their mother.

It was one of those days he actually felt depressed. It was his mom's words that was pushing him down. That promise she left him-- and was now impossible to fulfill.

"Happy Birthday," he recalled his mom whisper as she hand him a slice of cake in a plate, her bruised face lighten up with a smile. He wiped his tears away, looking up at her.

"No more tears, baby..." she said lovingly.

He smiled wide and hopped off the couch, taking it from her and kissing her cheek softly, "I-i want you to bake my cake e-every year."

"I would be baking your cake till your 60th birthday if I still can, honey." his mom chuckled, placing a sweet kiss on his forehead, leaving it there for a moment.

"Are you, really?" he asked giggling.

"Promise," she nodded with a reassuring smile. It was then that his father barged in, shoving a terrified Justin inside in rage and fury.

Jason gasped in fright, climbing back into the couch and curling himself up. Pattie instantly jumped into action, picking Justin up from the ground and making him face her. His swollen eye were engulfed with tears, streaming down his once flawless face. Heartwrenching sobs escaped his busted lip.

"What are you doing?!" she yelled, snapping her head up at the raging Bryan, who was fuming in anger.

"How dare you hurt my son, assh*le!"

"You're all the same, f-cking b-tches!" with that, he stomped closer and pulled Pattie by the hair. A choked scream escaped her lips as she held her head, being dragged across the floor.

"Stop!," Justin squeaked, running over but tripped in his own feet, falling flat on his stomach. Jason's cries became louder, watching as the scene unfolded in front of his eyes. Justin snapped his head in his direction, choking on a sob as he crawled his way over to his brother.

"J-Jase, don't cry," he whimpered, climbing beside him on the couch, draping his weak, thin arms around him. Pattie's scream shook the whole room, and they both cried in fear as they watched their mother beaten up.

"I HATE YOU, I HATE YOU, I HATE YOU!"  Jason screamed as tears endlessly rolled down his soft red cheeks, the slice of cake now on the floor. That night was where all hope for them vanished. He watched his father kill his mother, doing nothing else but cry in his brother's arms, who only buried his face into his back--endless sobs and cries leaving him.

"Jason...."  Justin's soft, gentle voice snapped him out of his sorrowful trance, that's when he realized he hadn't locked the door. His brother was standing there, looking down at him with sympathy as he was suit up in all black.

"You're big enough to cry," Justin chuckled, a smile on his lips though his eyes told otherwise. Jason knew he was crying, too.

"Don't try making me feel better when you can't do it to yourself," Jason rasped out, his voice in different octaves. Justin sighed, tracing his lips with his tongue and walked over to him, turning off the shower and leaning down to his level.

"You used to love it when I comfort you," he whispered, smiling small. Jason merely looked in his glazed over eyes, not uttering a single word, "We'll both cry and you'll make grabby hands at me." he continued, chuckling softly at the memory.

"That was years ago," Jason mumbled, a tear sliding down his face.

"Well, I was hoping we could do that again," Justin sucked in a breath and let it out before continuing. "Maybe not as much as you do, but I kinda need that, too."

Jason couldn't help but let out a small chuckle, watching Justin open his arms for him and without a second thought, jumped into him, wrapping his arms around Justin tightly as sobs overtook him again.

He felt his brother's large arms envelope him into a loving and comforting hug. Justin still towered inches from him even in that position. It felt just like the hugs they shared when they were little kids. They would find comfort in each other. They would be each other's rock, holding them when they seem to fall.

He felt Justin's body vibrate with him as they quietly cried, grip tightening on each other. Jason slowly clutched and unclutched Justin's shirt, making large grabby hands on the cloth. Just like he used to. Justin inwardly smiled, rocking them back and forth slowly as he hummed into his brother's shoulder.

"Everything's..." he started, waiting for Jason to finish for him.

"... gonna be alright..."

"Hi mommy," Jason whispered as he knelt down in front of Pattie's grave, setting a bouquet of flowers down, "It's me, Jason."

Receiving nothing in response as expected, he sighed and continued, looking down and smiling small, "I... I'm seventeen now... No one baked me a cake because I don't like anyone's cooking except yours... I like Justin's too but he doesn't really know how to bake." he chuckled. "But he promised we would celebrate my birthday later though..."

"You know what, mommy? I met new friends. They're not meanies like those kids back in school. They're nice and I once dated the other one. She's pretty and she likes me. She doesn't hate me like the others. I just wish you could meet her... Her name's Emily.." he smiled, licking his lips. "And you know what, mommy? Her friend is really nice too and I really do want her for Justin. She's pretty, too. Her dad's in the police force but she protected us. She took care of Justin when he was sick and she's the only one who can actually defy him."

"Hey, stop talking about me," Justin interjected with a chuckle. Jason just laughed softly and playfully stuck his tongue out.

"Idiot," Justin mumbled, rolling his eyes, "Anyway, let me talk to mom now."

He started to push Jason out of the way, "But I'm not done yet!" he protested with a laugh.

"And I look like I care?"  Justin playfully scoffed. "LOL nope."

"You just said "LOL"," Jason chuckled.

"Who cares?"

"I do."

"I don't."
