I had a new family. At least that's what it felt like. If I had to categorize them further, Louis and Niall would be my triplets. We are so alike it's crazy, although they are a bit more outgoing than I am.
Liam was like my older and definitely more mature brother, almost like my dad because he looked out for me so much, but he still knew how to have fun.
Zayn was like my best friend, who you tell everything and anything, and they tell you the same.
I had actually seen Harry a few times around the house, but never enough to get a good look at him, much less get to know him, he seem preoccupied with some other things.
I was laying on the couch with my legs swung onto Zayn's lap, Liam and Louis shared another couch in the theater room and Niall sat in a recliner by himself. Three out of the four were asleep, but when I looked back to see Louis, who I thought was awake, I found his seat empty. I looked around the room but couldn't find him. I just shrugged it off thinking he had gotten something to eat or whatever.
Before I could return to the movie I heard a loud cry from outside the room and turned to find Louis running in with black lines painted under his eyes and a full water gun in his hand.
"You wouldn't dar--"
I never got to finish that sentence because the next thing I knew I was being soaked by a Super Squirter. I shrieked so loud it woke up all the others. Niall looked to Louis who had another gun in his hand, which I hadn't noticed at first, that he tossed to Niall, who caught it and began soaking Liam, who was still in shock. Zayn grabbed my hand and pulled me out of the room with Louis on our tails.
I followed Zayn outside to the backyard right by the pool. I looked at Louis innocently and said "You wouldn't squirt me again would you?"
"No, actually I have a better idea." he looked to Zayn who had a smirk on his face and glanced towards the pool.
"Oh no you do--" I stammered. I was being picked up by the waist by Zayn and my feet by Louis, by this time Niall and Liam had joined us outside, I looked to them hopelessly, but they just laughed and shook their heads.
In one swift motion I felt myself flying through the air and landing straight in the cold pool water. As I came up to the surface I planned on yelling at all of them but I noticed that they had all jumped in and now were wrestling each other. I just laughed silently at their goofiness.
The next hour consisted of splashing and screaming and chicken fights. It was the most fun I had had in well.... forever.
Finally we got out of the pool when it started getting darker and made our way back into the house.
I ran upstairs to my room and took a quick shower and threw on some comfy clothes. When I went downstairs, it was if the whole mood had changed. All four boys stared at me silently with worried looks on their faces.
"What happened?" I asked hesitantly.
Louis let out a long sigh. "While you were in the shower a doctor called.... from the US." he paused "Dr. Water's? You know him?"
I felt my heart drop and I broke out into a cold sweat. "Yeah what about him?"
"Well he called to ask if you had found a therapist and were seeing them regularly, also something about 'depression medication'. Amber what's this about?"
I didn't know what to say. How could I have forgotten. Less than a month ago I wanted to leave this world, now I'm having the time of my life. That's why, I've been so happy I haven't worried about seeing some stupid therapist.
"Amber if there's something you need to tell u--"
Without thinking I ran out of the room and out the front door.
"Amber!" I heard Louis yell from behind me.
I kept running and I didn't look back.
After about an hour of running around the city I knew I was completely lost. I wanted to call Louis but I didn't want to face the boys just yet. But there was no other way for me to get home. So I had no other choice. I pulled out my phone and started scrolling through my contacts. I called Louis but no answer. Was he ignoring me already? I felt so ashamed. I tried all the other boys but I got the same reply... nothing.
Finally as I was losing hope my eyes landed on Harry's contact. I hadn't actually talked to him before, but I was feeling sick and cold and honestly I just wanted to get home no matter who or what I had to face.
I tapped on his name and the phone began to ring.
A deep voice picked up "Hello?"
"Hi, is this Harry?"
"Yes, and who is this?"
"It's Amber, Louis' cousin."
His voice seemed to instantly soften "Oh Amber, hey what's up?"
"Well actually I'm lost and none of the other boys will pick up, so if I'm not bothering you....."
"Oh don't worry about it, where are you? I can come pick you up."
"I'm at the corner of Benson Street."
"Ok I'll be there in about 15 minutes."
"Ok thanks so much."
"No problem be there soon."
I hung up and took a seat on the bench at the corner. I was shivering, I hadn't noticed how cold it had gotten. After about ten minutes I heard footsteps coming from the right of me and turned to see a man about my age if not older in a hooded sweatshirt. At first I thought it was Harry, but after looking a little harder I noticed it was definitely not him. He took a seat next to me on the beach. He didn't speak for the first few minutes and I was considering moving somewhere else but he asked,
"What's a pretty girl, like you doing out here all by yourself?" His voice was deep and raspy.
"Waiting for my someone." I replied, even though the smarter choice would've probably been to ignore him.
"Well then I think we have enough time." he said smugly.
I looked at him with a confused face, but before I could realize what was happening, the man had overtaken me and was ripping at my clothing. I tried to scream but he quickly shut me up by punching me in the face multiple times. I was scared and didn't know what to do. Black dots started to form in my eyes and I was afraid I was going to pass out, but before I could I felt the weight of the man being pulled off of me and I saw someone nailing him against the wall and punching him it the face, knocking him out. Before I could see who the person was I blacked out.
I woke up to find myself in a car, with I driver I didn't recognize at first, but then noticed it was Harry. I tried to sit up a little more but instantly felt a pain in my chest and my face was completely numb. He realized I was awake and he pulled the car over to the curb. He turned to face me with a worried look on his face.
It was the first time I really got a good look at his features. His deep green eyes, prominent chin, and brown curly hair, that at the moment was held back from his face with a bandana.
He was inspecting my face, which probably had a million bruises on it. He slowly raised his hand to my face, but I instantly flinched back, scared and not exactly sure if I trusted him just yet. He realized, and put his hand down, grabbing a cold water bottle from the glove compartment and handing it to me.
"Here put this by your eye." His voice was deep, but caring.
"Thanks." I replied. I glanced down at his hand which was a deep purple. Shocked I asked, "Were you the one who beat up that guy?"
He smiled a little at this, his dimples showing, "Yeah, I gave him what he deserved. The police picked him up about 10 minutes ago."
"So what were you doing out at midnight without anyone?" he asked.
"I was just.... walking around and got lost." I replied.
He looked at me suspiciously, I could tell he didn't believe me.
"Ok, well we are almost to the hospital so--"
"No, please don't take me to the hospital, just take me home I'll be fine." I said quickly.
"Are you sure? Your banged up pretty badly..."
"Yes, I'm sure."
"Ok, then I'll take you home, as long as you tell me why you were out so late."
"I told you I--"
"No, don't lie to me." he said seriously. I wasn't sure what to say without giving too much away.
"I just needed to be alone for a while." I replied.
He nodded as if he understood. "That's how I felt for the past few days. By the way I'm sorry I couldn't make it to dinner and haven't introduced myself sooner," he said.
"You like the other guys?" he asked.
"Yeah, they're great."
He laughed. "An interesting group aren't they."
"Yeah, you could say that."
We pulled up to the house and Harry got out to open my door, we started to walk towards the house when I stopped him.
"Can we not mention what happened tonight? I don't want Louis to get anymore worried."
"Amber you're covered in bruises what am I supposed to tell them?"
"Tell them I fell..." I replied.
"They aren't stupid Amber, they will never believe that."
"Please... just let me deal with that."
"Ok..." he said slowly.
I had barely met him and I was already having him keep secrets for me. I wasn't even sure if I trusted him, but I had so easily let the other boys in, so why not him?
We walked in the house and instantly Louis ran up to me and gave me a huge hug
"Where have you been? We've been worried sick! And what happened to your face?"
"I fell..." I said hesitantly. Harry let out an annoyed sigh. I also saw him pull his sleeve over his injured hand, not wanting to raise suspicion.
"I'm just going to go to bed," I said as I ran upstairs. I took a long shower and threw on some clothes not before noticing the long bruise down my side. I sat down on my bed and plugged my phone into my charger. I then heard a soft knock on the door.
"Don't come in." I said harshly. But the intruder didn't listen and opened the door, it was Zayn.
"Hey I know you don't want to talk but we are all worried about you. I told Lou I'd talk to you, he's a little worked up right now." He came over and sat on my bed.
"Amber, I'm like, your best friend, you know you can tell me anything."
I slowly nodded.
"So please, tell me why a doctor called today?"
"Did Louis tell you about my family?" I asked.
"Yeah he did, he didn't mean to it just kinda slipped out."
"No, that's fine you were going to find out anyway." I sighed heavily. "The reason the doctor called is because around a month ago.... I.... tried to commit suicide."
Zayn looked completely shocked but then he just started rubbing my back softly.
"I've never regretted it until now, I was in a bad place, and I didn't feel like anyone loved me anymore, I wanted to be with my family again."
He nodded and said, "Well Amber, you know we are your family and we all love you."
I smiled softly, "I know and I'm happy with you guys, I just never wanted you to find out because I was afraid you would look at me differently, I was ashamed."
"Well you shouldn't be, we love you no matter what, okay?"
He then embraced me and I was able to let out a breath I had been holding in for a long time.
"Could you tell the others? I don't want to repeat the story."
"Of course," he said, "I'll let you get some sleep now."
"Okay, thanks Zayn."
"No problem Am, sleep tight."
And that night I did.
