We all were sat at the table in the living room eating the large pizza we had ordered and watching Niall’s favorite football team, Derby, on the television. We all sat there quietly until Louis decided to speak up.
“So you’ve been home for almost a week and we haven’t mentioned the obvious.”
All five of us looked at him confused. He pointed his finger in my direction and then at Harry across the room, “You two are obviously together.”
“What, I--,” I stuttered.
“Don’t try to deny it, it’s not gonna work with me. I just want to tell you that it needs to stop.”
Harry opened his mouth to speak but Louis cut him off as well. “Amber, you are my cousin. Harry, you are one of my best friends and I just can’t approve of you two together.”
Niall tried to speak up, “Louis I don’t think that’s really fair.”
“I don’t care if it’s fair. I don’t want to see either of you get hurt and I know at least one of you will if this continues on.”
It seems like everyone in the room was protesting, but Louis stood his ground.
“I need you two to promise right now that anything between you two from now on will be friendly, nothing more.”
I had nothing to say so I turned to Harry and I was surprised to see the look on his face. He looked furious. My eyes silently pleaded with his not to argue with him, so Harry seemed to take a deep breath and compose himself.
“Louis, did you even think for a second how we may feel about the situation,” he stated calmly.
“This is not about you--,”
Harry stood up quickly, “It is about us! It is about our feelings for each other, and the fact that we can’t help how we feel! The fact that I can’t help that I love her!” he yelled violently.
The room went silent and my eyes widened, staring back into his. As hard as I tried I couldn’t stop the smile or the redness creeping onto my face.
Louis broke the silence, “I just really don’t feel okay with it,” he said quietly.
“Whatever you want,” Harry said, bowing sarcastically as he got up and headed upstairs.
“It’s for the best Harry!” Louis yelled up after him.
I blinked quickly, bringing myself back down to earth. I wasn’t sure what to do or say so I decided to go upstairs as well. Louis tried to stop me, but I ignored him and continued towards my room. I felt like I had just taken a blow to the chest, but at the same time I felt like I was floating above the clouds. It felt like something I never had was being ripped from me, but at the same time I was given the best gift I had ever received. I froze midway up the steps as I heard more voices in the living room. One I detected as Louis, the other I couldn’t make out just yet.
“Well what else am I supposed to do, Liam?” That answered my question.
“Look, Louis I know you are concerned, but I’m not sure even Amber knows how he feels about the situation and even if she did, it’s not like we can change their feelings towards each other.”
I heard Louis sigh and then Niall spoke up.
“They really care about each other Louis. I can see it, you can see it, we all can. I also know that Harry would never try to hurt Amber and he’s going to do everything he can to prove it to you.”
“Well for now, it’s not happening, and that’s final,” Louis said harshly. I then heard him coming toward the stairs so I quickly ran up to my room.
That night I wasn’t sure if I slept or not. Too many thoughts were rushing through my mind. I was overjoyed at what Harry had said, because for once I was sure I felt the same way, but then the fact that Louis didn’t approve of it made me worried. Eventually I dozed off, but was soon woken up by the rising sun.
A yawn escaped my lips as I made my way to the kitchen where I expected to find all the boys but instead it was deserted. I searched the basement, but they weren’t there either. I checked my phone, but no missed calls or texts. I decided to texted Harry and ask where they were. Within minutes I received a reply. An address.
I went upstairs and got changed into jeans and a red and white striped sweater, threw my hair up in a bun and grabbed my white Vans and my phone and headed out the door. Thankfully Niall had left his car so I decided to borrow it.
I pulled up the address on my GPS and took off. Within ten minutes I had arrived at a tall building. I went in through the main entrance and saw a small waiting room and sitting in a chair was one curly-haired boy with his head in a magazine. When he noticed my presence his lips curled into a small smile, showing his dimples.
He held up the magazine, “Do I really look like this?” he asked pointing to a picture of him on the cover.
“Oh, much worse,” I replied trying to stay as serious as possible but epically failing.
“So what is this place?” I asked looking around.
“Follow me,” he replied grabbing my hand. He dragged me along after him as I giggled. He made sharp turns through the hallways, almost making us run into multiple people, until we reached a closed door which he quickly opened and pulled me inside.
“Welcome to our studio,” he exclaimed throwing his hands up in the air.
“So this is where you all disappear to?”
I saw Niall sitting in a booth with headphones on, he noticed me and gave me a quick smile and wave. Zayn and Liam sat on a small couch in deep conversation. I plopped myself down on a stool and listened as Niall recorded one of their new songs.
“Where’s Louis?” I asked.
“Out on a coffee run,” replied Harry.
When Niall was finished he took off the headphones and came out of the booth.
“Sounds good,” I told him.
“Thanks,” he replied smiling, “Harry how’s it going with the guitar?” he asked.
I turned to see Harry sat on the floor with a guitar in his hands that he strummed quietly.
“I didn’t know you played guitar Harry,” I said.
“Just learning. Niall is teaching me,” he replied.
I slipped off my stool and onto the floor next to him. He started to play multiple chords and hum softly. Out of the corner of my eye I saw the others leaving, Niall shoving Liam and Zayn out the door. I smiled softly to myself. I then turned back to Harry who was lost in the music.
After a few minutes he turned up to look at me, “You want to try?” he asked.
“Sure,” I replied hesitantly. He handed me the guitar which I positioned awkwardly in my hands. Harry noticed my discomfort so he came over and positioned himself behind me.
“Like this,” he said guiding my hands
“So what songs do you know how to play?” I asked as my heart beat accelerated from his touch.
“Well I almost know all the chords to our new song Happily,” he guided my fingertips once more and began teaching me which strings were which. Once I got that down, he began showing me the notes to the song.
I made plenty of mistakes which we laughed hysterically over, but I was finally able to play the chorus with minimal mistakes.
“Can you sing it?” I asked as I finished playing.
“Of course,” he replied smiling. He placed himself back in front of me as I began to play. He softly sang the chorus. I had never heard him sing before in person and let’s just say the recordings didn’t do him justice. His voice was smooth and secure, it warmed me up inside and gave me the feeling I always had when I’m around him.
I felt safe.
