I was happening again. I was shutting down. Sounds around me vanished as I entered the darkness I had been trying so hard to escape. Nothing could bring me out now.
Except one voice. I heard it faintly, calling my name. I tried to call back but no words came out of my mouth. I began to panic, afraid I would be trapped here in the darkness forever. I summoned everything in me and finally my eyes opened to reveal worried, stormy green eyes staring back into mine. I quickly wrapped my arms around this person, because I knew this was the one who always would keep me safe. Always be there to protect me.
“Amber, you’re okay. Don’t worry. It’s going to be fine,” he said soothingly.
A small smile crept onto my face, “I know,” I whispered.
We shut off the lights and I got comfortable under the covers. I slowly closed my eyes and let out a long sigh. I felt the bed move next to me as Harry reached his arms around my waist and pulled me close to his chest.
“Thank you,” he said quietly.
“For telling me,” he replied planting a soft kiss on my forehead.
My eyelids grew heavy and I drifted off into a peaceful sleep, but before I was pulled under I heard him whisper softly,
“I love you, Amber.”
The next morning we had packed up and grabbed breakfast at the hotel. Somehow we were able to make it to the airport without any paparazzi that Harry had warned me about. Before we knew it we had boarded the plane and were on our way home.
Home. It felt so good to say that. I smiled softly and rested my head on Harry’s shoulder looking out the window at the gorgeous view of the Atlantic. Harry turned and kissed my forehead.
“So what do you think Louis is going to say about your little adventure,” I asked sarcastically.
“Well, I think he’ll be overjoyed that you’re home, but he’ll be furious that I’m the one who came to get you.”
I laughed at his reply, “Probably.”
“But I’m glad I was the one to come.”
I looked up at him to find his smile matching mine, “Me too.”
Finally we landed and there was a rental car waiting for us. We put our bags in the trunk and got in the back. I began to feel my stomach twisting as we approached the driveway. I felt a reassuring squeeze and looked to see Harry’s finger entwined with mine. When we reached the house we got out and grabbed our luggage. He held my hand again as we walked up to the front door.
I reached towards the doorknob, but then I froze.
“Amber it’s gonna be okay.”
I forced my hand to open the door and slowly walked in. The house seemed completely silent except for a voice coming from the living room. We walked in and noticed it was the television and all four boys were staring at it blankly.
Harry nudged me softly so I took a step forward, “Hey guys,” I said quietly.
All eyes turned to me and I saw Louis’ grew especially wide. I opened my mouth to speak, but before I could get a word out I felt multiple arms pulling me into a huge hug. Tears began to sting my eyes as I took in their warmth.
“I missed you so much,” I whispered.
Niall pulled back from the group, “Yeah, well how do you think we feel?”
I chuckled softly and turned around to see Louis staring at Harry. And he didn’t look happy. Liam noticed as well, he put his hand on Louis’ shoulder to try and calm him.
“Lou, why don’t you take Amber up to her room, I bet you two have a lot to talk about.”
I wasn’t sure if I liked that idea, but I grabbed my suitcase and took Louis’ hand and guided him upstairs. Before we reached the top I heard Zayn downstairs.
“Dude, you are in so much trouble.”
I opened my door and took in a deep breath. It felt good to be back. Louis took a seat on my bed as I began to unpack my things. I pretty much expected him to blow up at me, but he didn’t.
“So how was it? I heard you got to see your friend, and your uncle seems nice.”
“It was really great actually. I did get to see my friend, her name is Melissa. My uncle was…. Okay. But let’s just say I’m glad to be home.”
“Well trust me I’m ecstatic,” he replied smiling, “I was actually thinking we could go someplace tonight, just you and me, for some ‘cousin bonding time’.”
“Sure that sounds great,” I replied.
“Okay, how’s six sound?”
“I’ll be ready.”
He smiled as he got up and walked out of my room. I sighed as I plopped down on my bed, closing my eyes and letting myself sink down into the bed. It wasn’t long before I heard yelling from downstairs.
HARRY’S POINT OF VIEW:
“What the hell were you thinking?” Louis yelled in my face.
I should’ve seen this coming. Well, I did, but I thought he would’ve given it more time before completely blowing up at me.
“Honestly, I wasn’t thinking. I just wanted Amber to come home, like the rest of you.”
“Yes, but did you really have to go and get her? Without even telling me? Just because you have a little crush on her doesn’t mean you have the right to do that!”
I felt anger coursing through my veins, “Can’t you just be happy that she’s home?”
“I am happy that she’s home! But maybe I wanted to be the one to get her! I am her cousin you know!”
“Look I’m sorry, but she seemed perfectly happy with it being me last night!”
“What’s that supposed to mean?” he asked, crossing his eyebrows as he stepped closer to me.
“Nothing,” I replied quietly.
“Oh my… No. You didn’t. You wouldn’t dare!”
“Wouldn’t dare what?” I asked confused.
“You did NOT do it with MY cousin. Did you?”
Realization hit me like a brick, “Louis, what the—No!”
“You son of a---,”
“Louis! Nothing happened!”
“Well it sure doesn’t sound like it!”
“What do mean? I didn’t say anything that would remotely---”
“You’ve got some nerve.”
“Louis! Harry! Calm down, now.” Liam yelled rushing into the room and getting between us. Louis yanked his hand from Liam’s grasp and stormed toward the stairs.
As he went up I heard him yell harshly, “Forget about dinner tonight, I’m not feeling up to it.”
Confused I slowly went to the stairs and saw Amber sitting at the top. She had heard it all. She began to slowly walk down the stairs and I opened my arms and she quickly accepted.
“He’s not mad at you, you know,” I whispered trying to reassure her. She didn’t respond, but I knew she heard me, “Hey, how about you and I go out.”
She looked up at me and I could see tears in her eyes, “I don’t want you to get in more trouble.”
“That’s for me to deal with,” I replied smirking.
“Okay, I’ll go get ready,” she said running upstairs.
I felt a smile creeping on to my face as I turned back to the living room. Liam stood there with his arms crossed in front of his chest.
“You’re an idiot.”
Still smiling I replied, “I know.”
AMBER’S POINT OF VIEW:
I quickly threw on a pair of gray leggings and a large black sweater. I then stood in front of the mirror for about ten minutes contemplating how to do my hair as thoughts rushed through my head.
“Is this a date?” I asked myself, “No, he just felt bad for me and we are just friends.”
But no matter what I told myself I couldn’t wipe the stupid grin off my face. I finally decided to wear it in a loose braid. I pulled on my black Vans and ran back downstairs.
“Who’s car are we taking?” I asked Harry as we walked down the driveway.
“Well, the restaurant isn’t far, so I was thinking we could walk.”
“Okay,” I replied as we headed down the street. He took my hand in his and I felt butterflies begin to form in my stomach.
“So, what all did you hear?” he asked quietly.
“Pretty much everything.”
“Great,” he replied sarcastically.
I laughed quietly, “It’s cool, I mean I understand why he’s mad I just wish he wouldn’t take it out on you, because it’s not your fault.”
“Well, it sorta is.”
“No it’s not. Louis’ just overreacting and from what I’ve seen over the past few months, he tends to do that a lot.”
I turned my neck to look at him and noticed him smiling at me, “What?” I asked, my cheeks beginning to turn red.
“Oh, nothing.” He gave my hand a small squeeze as we continued down the road towards the restaurant. After about ten minutes we had made it and we went inside and got a table.
The rest of the night consisted of talking and laughing and just relaxing. By the time we had finished the restaurant was empty and they had begun to close up.
“You ready to go?” Harry asked, holding out his hand.
I nodded slipping my hand into his and following him out the door. When we reached the house it was dark and it seemed as though everyone had gone to bed. We headed upstairs, but before we went our separate ways Harry spun me around to face him.
“I had fun tonight,” he whispered, so as not to wake anyone. Although it was dark I could see a small smile appear on his lips.
“Me too,” I replied.
I felt him lean in closer and then slowly closed the gap between us as our lips touched softly. He slowly wrapped his arms around my waist and I hung mine on his shoulders. I felt my heart rate increase monumentally. Finally he pulled away and planted another kiss on my forehead.
“Good night,” he said quietly, walking into his bedroom.
