This morning I woke up to my stomach growling. I was starving. I skipped getting dressed and headed downstairs to get something to eat. I walked into the kitchen and found it already busy. All the boys were there except for Zayn who was probably still sleeping. I walked to the cupboard and got myself a bowl then I poured out some cereal and sat down at the counter.
“Amber, you’re quitting your job.”
I looked up, cereal dripping out of mouth. Louis stood there staring at me.
“What? Why?” I asked confused and quite upset.
“Harry told me what happened last night, and I don’t want you working with Ashton anymore,” he replied casually.
I glared at Harry, “You told him?”
“Yeah, and you should be glad he did,” said Louis.
“Why? It’s not a big deal!” I yelled getting very angry.
“Amber, yes it is,” spoke Liam. Niall nodded next to him.
“Well, thanks guys. I can tell which side you’re on,” I said sarcastically.
“I can take you to the café, if you’d like,” offered Harry.
Before I could reply Louis cut him off, “Oh no, you’re not, you two aren’t going anywhere together without a chaperone. I’ll take her.”
I stood there baffled. Niall snickered and I gave him a look. Then Zayn decided to walk in.
“Actually Louis, you can’t, you have to go to the studio this morning,” he said.
Louis cursed under his breath, “I forgot about that. Fine, but I still don’t want you to take her,” he said pointing his finger at Harry who raised his hands up in defense “Niall, you can take her.”
Instantly we both started complaining about the situation, “Why do I have to take her?” he whined.
“Cause I said so,” said Louis ending the conversation.
Niall heaved a sigh, “Fine, meet me in the car in ten minutes,” he said getting up from his seat and heading upstairs.
I finished my breakfast and went upstairs as well. I threw on a pair of leggings and a big white sweater with a red scarf. I took my hair out of its ponytail and luckily it was controllable so I brushed it and let it fall in its own waves. I found some red Vans and put those on, did my makeup, grabbed my phone and made my way back down to the front door. Niall was already waiting in the driveway so I hopped in the car.
“Took you long enough,” he said annoyed, but he was smirking so I didn’t take his comment seriously.
“You think I can just wake up and look this good?” I asked ironically.
He chuckled. He drove down the street and parked the car by the café. As we walked in I felt butterflies forming in the pit of my stomach, but not the good ones. I had brought my uniform and such to return and so we went in the entrance. I walked up to the counter where Ashton was sitting behind the cash register. I had told Niall to wait outside, but I could see him lurking by the window. Ashton looked up and noticed me there.
“Hey, Amber. What happened to you last night?” He plastered a fake smile on his mouth and I had the urge to slap it off his face, but I contained myself.
“Wasn’t feeling good,” I replied simply, “So getting to it, I came here to quit, so here’s my uniform.” I set the bag on the counter and began to walk towards the door.
“Wait your quitting? Why?” he asked making me turn back around.
“Just wasn’t exciting enough for me. Sorry.”
He made an effort to come out from behind the counter and he walked up to me. I instantly tensed as he put his hand on my shoulder.
“Hey, was it something I did?” he asked innocently.
“I don’t know, ask that girl you were with last night.”
He looked surprised, but I could tell he was faking it, “Oh her? She made a move on me.”
“Ah, I see,” I turned around and headed towards the door once more, “Bye Ashton.”
I walked up to Niall who look concerned, but I gave him a smile and it seemed to calm him down. We got back in the car and headed home. It was already three in the afternoon when we got back and the house was completely quiet. Niall went downstairs to the basement, but I didn’t feel like having company so I went to my bedroom. I pulled a book from my bookshelf and sat down to begin reading it. I was soon interrupted by yelling coming from outside my room. I slowly opened the door, but found no one in the hallway. I heard the same voices again this time coming from inside Harry’s room. I brought my ear up to the door so I could listen closer.
“I’m just saying, I see what’s going on between you and I want it to stop.” It was Louis.
Then another voice answered him. Harry. “Lou, nothing’s going on between us, I swear.”
“Honestly, you two are clueless.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
“Please, just stay away from her,” Louis sighed.
“I told you! There’s nothing going on! Why don’t you trust me?” Harry yelled, obviously getting upset.
“Because I have eyes, and so do the others, they all agree with me.”
“Well you’re wrong.”
I then heard footsteps coming closer to the door. I quickly ran inside my room, but cracked the door open so I could still see through to the hall. Louis stormed out of Harry’s room and went into his own, slamming the door behind him. Harry then came out of his room, rubbing the back of his neck in exasperation. He then headed downstairs. On an impulse I decided to follow him. He went out the back door and down the dock by the lake. I slowly walked up from behind and took a seat next to him, dangling my legs off the edge. He looked surprised to see me.
“So what was that all about, between you and Lou?” I asked.
His eyes widened, “You heard all that?”
“Not all of it, but enough to hear that you were both pretty upset. And I also heard something about you and some girl.”
I could see his cheeks redden, so obviously he did like her, whoever she was.
“It was nothing,” he said sternly.
I was surprised he was getting upset, “Sure didn’t sound like nothing.”
“Well it’s no big deal,” he said standing up.
“Harry, you know you can tell me…” I stood up as well and he began to walk away.
“Really, Amber I just can’t talk about it,” he said raising his voice, turning back around to face me.
“You can’t or you won’t?”
“Amber, seriously drop it!”
He took a step towards me making me step backwards in surprise, the only thing I didn’t realize is that I was at the edge of the dock. I leaned in towards the water and lost my balance falling in.
“Amber!” Harry yelled as I plunged into the cold lake water.
I came up to surface and Harry was swimming towards me, apparently he had jumped in after me.
“Are you okay? I’m so sorry, I didn’t mean to—,” I cut him off laughing.
He looked at me a little startled, but then a smile grew on his face and he began to laugh with me. I started to swim away from him, but quickly turned around playfully splashing him.
“Oh no, you didn’t,” he said.
“Oh yes, I did,” I began swimming frantically away from him, but he soon caught up to me and grabbed me by the waist. He whipped me around to face him. We were both still laughing softly and I couldn’t stop smiling.
The lake was too deep for me to reach, but he could barely touch so he turned around and told me to get on his back. I swung my legs around his waist and he lifted me through the water. He climbed out on shore and began to run through the grass spreading his arms out like a plane. I was bouncing up and down on his back and squealing all the way. Finally he tripped over something in the grass and we both fell to the ground. I on top of him. We were in the same situation we had been in the day before. He smiled softly, his dimples showing. I looked right into his luminous emerald eyes. I got this warm feeling in my stomach and the grin on my face kept growing.
We then heard footsteps coming towards us and I looked up to see Liam standing there with his arms crossed in front of his chest.
“I suggest you go get cleaned up, before Louis sees you like this,” he said sternly.
We quickly scrambled up and I got a good look at us, we were soaked with lake water and there was algae sticking to our skin and in our hair. Liam shot Harry a look and we all headed inside. We quickly ran upstairs past the kitchen where we could hear Louis talking to someone. When we reached the hallway Harry grabbed my arm and I turned to face him. We were both still laughing at the situation we were in, but I calmed myself down enough, so now I was just smiling like an idiot. He wrapped his arms around me and pulled me closer to him.
“I had fun,” he whispered.
“Me too,” I replied.
He lifted his hand towards my face and placed it on my cheek. I felt him start to lean in towards me and I slowly did the same. We were so close, when we heard someone coming upstairs so we quickly parted and went into our own rooms. I shut the door behind me and leaned up against it. I let out a sigh and felt my cheeks which were as hot as the sun. My teeth were showing through my wide smile. Then it hit me like a ton of bricks.
They had been talking about me.
