My alarm blared in my ears. I hadn’t had to set it for so long, it startled me. I shut it off and slowly got up. I went to the bathroom to clean myself up and then I put on my uniform. I buttoned up the blouse and tucked it into my skirt. I quickly braided my long hair down the side and pulled on a pair of red Toms that matched my top. I grabbed my phone and wallet and walked downstairs to grab myself something to eat.
I walked into the kitchen and found Harry, Louis, and Niall sitting at the counter. When Harry noticed me he stared at me wide-eyed making me feel a little uncomfortable. Louis caught him and glared at him harshly, hitting his arm, making Niall snicker. Louis gave him a look as well. I got myself a bowl of cereal and sat down at the kitchen table.
“When do you have to go in?” asked Louis, finally cooling down.
“I’m leaving in about a half hour,” I replied.
“Oh, I’m going to the studio around that time, do you want a ride?” offered Harry.
“Sure that’d be great.”
I glanced over at Louis expecting him to get all protective, but he had his head in his phone.
“Okay, just be ready then,” Harry said getting up from his seat.
“What time you get off?” asked Niall.
“Um, around 2:00.”
“I can pick you up too, if you’d like,” Harry spoke up again.
I was a little surprised, Louis looked up, interested in the conversation, “No, its fine, I don’t want to bother you.”
“It’s not a bother, I’m heading home around 1:30 and so I’ll just come and get you.”
I raised my eyebrows, “Okay, thanks again.”
“It’s no problem,” he replied leaving the room.
As he left Niall chuckled, a wide smirk planted on his face. Louis just looked back down at his phone grimacing.
“What?” I asked defensively.
“Well then wipe that smile off your face, you’re creeping me out.”
After I had finished eating I walked outside to the driveway where Harry was waiting in his car.
“Sorry, I lost track of time.”
“No problem, you ready?”
“Yupp,” I replied popping the “p”.
It was a short drive considering the café was just down the street. He pulled up next to the entrance to drop me off. I hopped out of the car and waved goodbye, hurrying in the door. I checked my phone and noticed I was five minutes early. Good. I headed back towards the kitchen where I found Ashton shuffling through some papers.
“Hey,” he said looking up at me giving me a warm smile, “Your apron is over on that hook with your nametag on it, you can start by taking orders. I’m sure you read the ‘packet’ so you know what to do.”
I had read it back and forth. I was totally ready for this. I grabbed the apron and tied it around my waist. I headed towards the dining area taking in a deep breath. I started going around to the tables taking orders and bringing them back to kitchen. Finally I reached a table towards the back where I saw a familiar face.
“Harry, what are you doing here? I thought you had to be at the studio.”
He smiled, “I lied. I had nothing else to do, so I thought I’d take you on your first day, and since I was here I decided to grab a bit to eat.”
“I see,” I said grinning idiotically, “So what can I get you?”
He ordered his meal and I went and gave it to the cook. When it was ready I brought it back out to him.
“Here you go,” I said placing his plate on the table.
“This looks delicious,” he said licking his lips, “You make an excellent waitress.”
“Well a waitress doesn’t make the food, but thanks.”
“Amber!” Ashton yelled getting my attention. He raised his eyebrows and motioned to some customers who apparently had been waiting a while.
“Gotta go,” I told Harry rushing over.
After about two hours of service I was finally done. I walked back to hang up my apron. I turned around and bumped into Ashton.
“Hey, sorry about getting distracted and all,” I said quickly.
“Eh it’s no problem. Friend of yours?” he asked referring to Harry.
“Yeah, well I live with him, and four other boys to be exact.”
His eyes widened, “That’s asking for trouble.”
I laughed softly.
“Well if that ever gets boring, give me a call,” he said handing me a piece of paper.
“Will do,” I replied smiling, heading out the door.
I opened it and ran into, not to mention a very upset, Harry.
“You ready?” he asked sternly.
I slowly nodded, confused on why he was so angry, then I realized he had been watching so he saw the whole thing between me and Ashton. He shouldn’t care, but then again the boys had warned me to stay away from him so maybe that was it.
I followed him out to the car and we got in. After about five minutes he seemed to have cooled down. Then I noticed that he drove past our neighborhood.
“Um, you missed the turn,” I said quietly.
“I know,” he replied.
He kept driving as I sat there confused. We drove around for almost a half hour before he stopped. He climbed out and walked around to my door, opening it for me. I got out and looked around. We were literally in the middle of nowhere.
“Where are we?” I asked.
“You’ll see,” he smiled.
We were completely surrounded by trees, so I guessed we were in the woods somewhere. He took my hand in his and began guiding me away from the car. After walking for what seemed like ages, I thought he was lost but then we came to a clearing that revealed a gorgeous blue lake. My mouth hung open as I took in the scenery. Harry smiled widely as he dragged me towards a small dock with a little rowboat rocking in the water next to it.
“Is this yours?” I asked.
“Not really, I found it a long time ago running along the shore. This is actually the same lake by our house.”
He let go of my hand as he stepped into the boat, but quickly offered it again to help me in. I looked at him suspiciously but he grabbed me and pulled me in. I sat right across from him our knees touching.
“Harry I’m still wearing my uniform,” I said giggling.
“You can always wash it,” he replied.
He picked up the two oars on the sides and undid the rope attaching us to the dock. He then began rowing us towards the middle of the lake.
We stayed silent as I looked around. Flowering trees grew over the water, petals occasionally falling in because of the strong wind. Some other trees had started to change color as the seasons changed from warm and sunny to cool and breezy. When I came back to earth we had gone so far that I couldn’t see the little dock anymore. I glanced over at Harry and noticed he had been staring at me, grinning. My cheeks heated up quickly, making him chuckle.
“You wanna try?” he asked offering me one of the oars.
“Sure, why not?”
I took it from him and put it into the water. Together we started to row, but I noticed we weren’t going anywhere, we were just spinning in circles. We both realized this and began to laugh. His laugh warmed me from my head to my toes and I felt that feeling I had felt when I first met him. I felt safe.
He smiled at me again, his cheeky dimples showing. The sun was starting to go down giving the water an orange glow.
“It’s so beautiful,” I said looking around me.
“I know,” Harry did the same, but then he looked at me, “It is.”
I mentally slapped myself as I blushed again.
“Sorry, that was really cheesy,” he said laughing.
I laughed as well, “It’s okay, I like cheesy.”
He looked me straight in the eyes, he green ones bearing into mine. But his were much better than mine, his you could just get lost in. He hesitated before doing what he did next. He slowly began to lean in, and I being caught up in the moment, decided to do the same.
We were inches away, just as the torrential rain came pouring down on us.
