The movie had finished just as someone appeared at the door. It was Harry.
“We were just going—,” he paused, his jaw tightening as he glared at Liam’s arm draped around mine. He quickly composed himself and continued, “Um, we were going to go grab lunch, if either of you wanted to join?”
“Sure,” said Liam getting up from his seat and walking towards the door, “You coming Amber?”
“Actually I might just stay—,” Liam gave me a pleading look, “Okay sure.”
I got up and followed them upstairs.
“You ready Harry?” Louis asked as we approached the living room. He turned around and saw me standing there and he froze.
“Amber was going to come too, if that’s okay,” spoke Liam.
“Yeah, of course,” Louis stuttered.
I gave him a forced smile and followed Liam out to the car. I sat next to him in the back, Louis drove and Harry sat shotgun.
“Where are Niall and Zayn?” Liam asked.
“Niall’s at the studio and Zayn went out with Perrie,” Harry replied.
The ride was silent but we finally reached the restaurant. We went in and got a seat. I stayed next to Liam and the others sat across from us. I could tell by the look on his face Harry was hurt, by the fact that I was ignoring them. I had told him I couldn’t trust them and here I was fully trusting Liam. I fell a little guilty, but I shook it away.
Every once in a while Louis would attempt to make conversation but eventually each topic died and most of the meal was filled with an awkward silence.
While I was finished my sandwich I had ordered three teenage girls came up to our table with wide smiles on their faces.
“Ohmygosh hi,” one of them squealed, “We’re, like, your biggest fans, can we get an autograph?”
I looked up surprised. Why would girls be asking for their autograph? Then it dawned on me so I just put my head down. I felt Liam’s hand slowly rubbing my back and he smiled softly at me.
“Sure,” he said grinning at the girls.
After they had finished signing things and taking pictures Liam sat back down in his seat and continued massaging my back.
“Are you two dating?” one girl blurted out.
Louis spit out the water he was drinking and Harry abruptly stopped signing a girl’s t-shirt to glare up at me and Liam. My face began to heat up and Liam spoke up.
“Oh love no, just good friends,” he replied.
“Oh sorry, I just figured since…” she stuttered pointing to his hand protectively on my back. He quickly moved his hand and the girl just shrugged, “Never mind.”
They then said their goodbyes and walked away, squirming in excitement. Screaming about how they just met ‘One Direction’. I instinctively rolled my eyes and continued eating.
Liam chuckled, “Sorry about that.”
Louis and Harry still seemed in shock about the one girl’s statement about me and Liam but I just ignored it.
Finally we all had finished and we headed home. I walked inside and began to head upstairs, but Louis stopped me.
“Amber, can I speak to you?” he asked hesitantly.
I slowly turned around to face him, “Sure.”
He led me outside to the backyard and down to the hammock. He hopped in causing in to rock back and forth and patted the area next to him. I slowly sat down. He just sat there swinging, watching the scenery around him. I didn’t know if he was going to say anything anytime soon so I spoke up.
“I got a job today.”
He raised his eyebrows in surprise.
“At the café down the street,” I continued, “I start working tomorrow.”
“How’d you land a job this quickly?” he asked still shocked.
“I just saw a sign saying they were looking for help, so I filled out an application and they gave me the job.”
“Shouldn’t you have asked me first?”
This time it was my turn to act surprised, “I’m not a child Louis.”
He sighed, “I know, I just wish you had told me before taking the job.”
“Well I wish you would’ve told me that you all are freaking One Direction, but I guess neither of us got what we wanted,” I said angrily.
He looked down at his lap, “Amber, I’m so sorry about that, I honestly just thought it’d be best if we took it slow, I wanted you to get to know us as us before you knew us as One Direction, the biggest boy band in the world,” he said the last part sarcastically. “Rarely do people get to know as who we really are, they always want to be friends with the famous boys, not the normal, real, boys.”
I sat there quietly, I hadn’t thought about it that way.
“I forgive you, I’m just not—,” I started.
“I know, I know, not sure if you can trust us. Harry told me all about it and he seemed really upset about it too,” he said, “But you can trust us Amber. Believe me when I say none of us would ever do anything to hurt you. If any of them did, I would beat them to a pulp.”
I slowly grinned, but his expression stayed serious.
“Amber, you can trust me.”
“I know,” I whispered, “But I’m scared.”
“Scared? Why?” he said concerned.
“I’m scared I’m going to lose you, like I lost—,” I stopped before the tears spilled over.
“You are not going to lose us, not going to lose me,” he said sternly.
I stared into his blue eyes and smiled, “I can see why girls go crazy about you.”
He chuckled, “Eh, it’s just the Tommo charm.”
I laughed softly, he then gave me a big hug and a kiss on the forehead. We then headed back inside because it was starting to get dark.
We walked inside and found Niall, Zayn, and Liam sitting at the bar. Liam smiled at me but Niall had a look of unsureness on his face as if he were asking if it was okay to approach. I felt a little guilty so I smiled and gave him a hug. He looked surprised but then really happy as he returned the gesture.
“I’m really sorry, Amber,” he said quietly.
“Oh hush, I’ve heard it all already,” I said jokingly.
Zayn spoke up, “And what about me?”
“Oh, I’m not sure about you…” I said.
His smile faded but I quickly grabbed his arm and pulled him into a hug as well.
“Group hug!” yelled Louis tackling us, making us all fall to the ground and laugh.
At that moment I felt the weight of the world lift off my shoulders. I had been wrong I did need these boys, no matter how much I wanted to deny it. I trusted them and honestly I was glad they didn’t tell me, I liked the real guys better than the “famous” ones.
“Well, I’m heading up to bed,” I said looking at the clock on the wall, “I have to work tomorrow.”
“You got a job? Where?” asked Niall.
“The café down the street, Kidd Coffee,” I replied.
“Wait a second, doesn’t that kid A… Ashton! Doesn’t he work there?” asked Liam.
“Yeah, he’s my boss. You know him?”
“All too much,” Niall replied rolling his eyes in annoyance.
“He didn’t seem that bad when I—.”
“Just be careful around him Amber,” said Louis firmly.
I knit my eyebrows together in confusion, “Okay…” I then proceeded to going upstairs, “Goodnight guys.”
The four boys mumbled replies as I ran up the steps. I walked down the hall towards my room but I crashed into someone coming out of there room.
“Oh sorry, Harry,” I said quickly trying to walk past him.
“Woah,” he said quickly grabbing my arm and turning me around to face him, his chest pressed up against mine. I looked into his green eyes.
“I really should be getting to bed,” I said.
“It’s only 9:30.”
“Um well I have to work tomorrow.”
“Yeah I heard you talking about that downstairs.”
I tried to pull away but he kept his grip on me.
“Amber, please,” he said sighing deeply.
“Can I talk to you for a moment?”
“Harry really I—,” but he didn’t listen instead he pulled me into his room.
I stood there awkwardly as he stared at me with what seemed like hurt on his face.
“Do you trust me?” he asked.
“Well I would say yes, but this whole thing is making me doubt that,” I replied a little annoyed now.
“I’m sorry,” he said quietly, “You can go.” He had a look of defeat.
This time I turned him around to face me. “Harry… I do trust you,” I whispered quietly.
I saw his face light up a little, “You do?”
“Yeah, I do,” I replied smiling.
He embraced me and I wrapped my arms around his waist hugging him back.
I then heard a small cough from behind us. I turned abruptly to find Louis standing in the doorway, arms crossed in front of his chest, eyebrows raised.
“I should be going,” I said.
“Yeah, I think that would be a good idea,” Louis replied.
I quickly walked out of Harry’s room and into my own. I got my pajamas on and shut off the light, climbing into bed. I laid there, staring at the ceiling, with a stupid grin on my face, my cheeks burning.
I rolled over and got comfortable then slowly drifted off to sleep.
