My name is Kirsteigh. I know, weird spelling. Anyway, my live is average-ish. I have tons of friends, but there's one person who I wish was my friend. His name is Tyler. He's the biggest loser in the school, well to my friends anyway. He's seems pretty cool. If only he wouldn't avoid me. Our friendship would be unnatural, but it sounds like an adventure.
I wake up to the sound of my alarm going off. "What the hell?" I groggily ask. I shut it off and look at the time. "Dammit! I'm gonna be late!"I scrambled out of bed, nearly fell, but safely made it to my closet. As I rummage through the selection of outfits, I find a nice pair of jeans and a tank top with a sweatshirt over it. I know my friends will give me hell for my choice in fashion, but I don't care. I'm tired and lazy.
As I rush to my car, I hear the sound of my brother running behind me. "Kirsteigh! Wait!" He shouts, well, screams. My brother's name is Kyle. I know what you're thinking. Your parents did that on purpose. Ding ding ding! We have a winner! Anyways, he's....not normal. He was born with Down's Syndrome and was always an outcast. We spent everyday together as children, but once I became popular, we did drift apart a little. I always treated him normal, but since I've made my friends, they've showed me how different he really is. I'll never see it, but it does give me a pang of guilt when I see him cowering in the corner due to my friend's comments.
"Don't worry, I wouldn't leave without you." I smile, taking in the sight of the biggest grin I've ever seen. We hop into my car and about halfway to school, Kyle speaks up. "Kirsteigh, why are people so mean?"
Why are people so mean? I've never thought of it before now. I know he struggles to fit in everyday, and while he struggles, people torture him. Seeing him so upset kills me. If I knew the answer, I'd tell him. "I don't know why. Maybe they're just jealous of your awesomeness." I laugh. I could hear him laugh slightly through his frown.
After 10 minutes of silence, we pull up to school. I turn the car off and jump out, running to the other side. "Kyle, don't worry. If they bother you, let me know. I'm not afraid to fight someone. And if they do hurt you, be ready with bail money." I joke, pulling him in for a hug. He doesn't accept, which upsets me. I look over my should and immediately understand why. My friends are watching. "Go with your friends. I'll be fine." He sadly whispers. I walk away, hoping my friends don't bother me about it.
