32. A turn for the worst

Today was the annual canoeing race!

Collin, Emily, Jake and i entered the race.

We all met at the docks at around noon.

"Hey!" I said as i approached them.

"Hey Scarlet, are you ready to lose?" Emily asked me.

"No way your going down!" I said laughing.

Emily and Collin were a team and me and Jake were another.

"Racers to your canoes!" A voice boomed over the speakers.

"Lets go!" I said grabbing Jakes arm and running to our canoe.

Jake got in first then helped me in. He sat in front of me, he turned around and gave me an oar.

"On your marks, get set...GO!"

We started paddling as fast as we could.

It didn't really matter if we came in first or not, we just wanted to place before Emily and Collin. We made a bet with them, if we lose we have to plan a romantic dinner for them. If we win they have to be our servants for s day.

We had to beat them.

As we canoed down the river i looked back to see where Emily and Collin were, they were close behind.

"They are behind us, but not by much!" I yelled over the sound of the water.

"Paddle faster!" Jake yelled back.

Another canoe came beside us, i looked over hoping it wasn't Emily and Collin. It wasn't. It was Kyle and some blonde chick.

We were approaching a split in the river and we started to turn right (since there was an arrow telling us to go that way) but Kyle turned left hitting us.

The canoe started to tip over but Jake managed to balance it.

Kyle hit us again, this time making us turn left. We couldn't turn back because of the island between the two paths.

So much for beating Emily and Collin. I stopped rowing.

"That jerk!" I yelled.

"Damn we were beating them too." Jake said.

The current began to get faster and more and more rocks came into view.

"Hold on this is going to be a bumpy ride!" Jake yelled.

I pulled the oar inside of the canoe and held onto either side of the the canoe. We kept teetering as the boat rocked side to side. Every time we hit a rock i was positive that the canoe would break.

"What do we do?" I asked.

"Wait it out, or we could try to go to shore." He said pointing to the sandy shores on either side of us. There was one problem though..."theres no way to get to shore the rocks are in the way!" I yelled.

"Then i guess we wait it out, it should calm down soon." Jake said.

As the minutes ticked by i got more and more scared. We kept hitting rocks and the current wasn't slowing down.

There was a huge rock up ahead. "Paddle to the left!" Jake yelled. I grabbed my oar and started to paddle. But we were to late.

The right side of the canoe hit the rock and we tipped over into the freezing cold water.

The current pulled me further down the river.

"Are you alright?" Jake asked me.

"Yeah." I said as i shivered.

Jakes eyes went wide and grabbed my wrist pulling me towards him. I looked over my shoulder to see a huge jagged rock, which i was about to hit!

Jake pulled me along as he tried to get near the shore. He grabbed one of the rocks and helped me climb on top of it.

I was about to help him up when his hand slipped.

"Jake!" I yelled as he bobbed down the river.

I jumped from rock to rock until i reached the shore.

I ran along it trying to keep up with him, but i was already so far behind.

"Jake!" I yelled again starting to panic.

I couldn't lose him.

I picked up a large branch and dragged it along with me.

I saw him holding onto another rock and quickly caught up to him.

I held out the branch and yelled, "hold on!"

He grabbed the branch and i pulled him up.

We quickly scurried across the rocks and sunk to the ground the minute we set foot on shore.

"Are you okay?" I asked as my teeth clattered.

"Yeah, I'm fine." He said breathing heavily.

I found my way into his arms and he held me tightly.

"I thought i was going to lose you." I said a tear escaping.

"Its alright I'm here." He said rubbing my back.

Just being in his arms made me feel warmer. There was a slight tingle in my stomach.

What was that?

Was i hungry?

No i ate not to long ago.

Did i have feeling for Jake?!

I can't were just friends.

But he did say he liked me.

He also said he was over me...

"Do you think we will find our way back?" I asked.

"Yeah we just have to follow the river back, it shouldn't take to long." He answered.

"Can we get warm and dry up a bit first?" I asked not wanting to leave his arms.

"Okay." He said smiling.

"Did you mean it?" I blurted out.

"Mean what?" He asked.

"That you were over me."

He started at me for a moment.

"I want the truth." I said.

"No." He said quietly looking ashamed. "I'm sorry for lying, its just taking longer then i thought."

He still liked me!!!

"Its alright i don't blame you for lying."

"I just wanted to make you happy, and if that meant getting over you, then i had to try." He said.

"Well I'm glad you care so much and also..." I grabbed either side of his face and brought his lips to mine, his eyes went wide but soon after i could feel him smile. "I'm glad you still like me."

"So what happened to just friends?" He asked.

"I saw what i was missing out on." I said as he pulled me to him again.

"Well I'm glad you changed your mind." He said bringing his lips to mine.
