I walk downstairs and it's so silent it frightens me. The TV has been turned off and they all watch me as if I am a show. You have to entertain them. Distract them from all their worries.
"Hey why'd you turn the TV off?" I ask. "Because we have bigger problems than the TV." Cameron says obviously annoyed. "Look it's been a long night. Cam you went to a party which probably sucked, Matt you needed some rest, boys you're still readjusting from your trip. Let's just relax and watch some movies. Yeah?" I say, hoping that we don't have to talk about this.
"That party did suck." Brent mutters. I smile. "What movie?" Shawn asks. You did it Nash. You got them distracted. Only for how long? A few hours until the movie ends? Then we all have to face reality all over again? Even if you do distract them the rest of the night, what happens tomorrow? You discuss it with Skylar? She'll probably get frustrated. That's not what I want. Not what I need. I'll just have t-
"Nash!" Matt snaps his finger in my face. "Huh?" How long was he calling me? "We're making popcorn. Let's go." He says walking off to the kitchen. I walk slowly behind him. We enter the kitchen and he turns to me. "What did the doctor say?" He questions.
Wait. What? Ignore that Nash. I smile over my confusion. "About popcorn? Says it's really good but watch out for them ker--" he cuts me off. "About Skylar." My heart begins beating faster. You're not doing a very good job of being a distraction.
"What are you talking about?" I say through clenched teeth. Get to the cupboard and just make popcorn so you can get out of this situation. "Stop playin' games Nash. What did the doctor say about Skylar's memory." I find the popcorn box.
"How many bags should I make?" I ask turning to him. "Nash." He says serious, but a look of annoyance takes residence, I stay silent. Should I tell him?
But what if he tells Cameron? Cameron will wonder why I never told him. We are super close. That will probably cause drama and it's the last thing I need right now.
"I'll make eight. One for every boy." I say quietly and take the plastic off each one. "It's not fair. I'm her boyfriend, I should get to know what's going on." Matt grumbles. "I should've been the one she woke up too. The one who could've comforted her at her time of need. Instead it was an asshole like you."
I thought I'd be mad, angry by what he just said but instead I was hurt. "Out of all the people she could've woken up to. She woke up to the most self-centred, cocky, annoying, lying, pieces of shit like you. She'll be forced to trust you. It's just sad, cause you'll just fuck everything up and mess her up all over again cause we all know what a fuck up you are."
The words dig deeper and deeper until I can't take it. I feel the tears in my eyes. Why am I gonna cry? I'm a man. We don't cry over shit like this. I find myself getting frustrated as Matt continued to insult me.
There was a large tearing sound as the un popped kernels flew everywhere. I pushed past Matt and out the kitchen. I opened the front door and slammed it behind me. I run down the steps and down the sidewalk. Tears stream down my face and I'm breathing heavily. I have no idea what to do.
I can't go back to that house but I can't spend the nights on the street. There is only one place left. I find myself slowing down at my last option. Will they even take me in? I just need a place to stay for the night. Or someone to talk to.
I ring the doorbell and wait. Tears still run down my cheeks and I'm a sniffling mess. I only hope Hayes doesn't open the door. The door opens and I find my mom. "Nash? Sweetie, what happened?" She pulls me into a hug. "Come in, come in." She closes the door behind me. "Come in the kitchen." She takes my hand and I only follow like a lost puppy.
I feel out of place as I sit down in one of the spiny chairs at the table. My mom is busy as she pulls out two mugs and hot chocolate mix. I watch as she puts milk in a pot, turning on the stove. A small smile crept onto my lips as I remembered her moving swiftly around the kitchen making us all hot chocolate.
"Alright. What happened?" I shrug. "Life." She laughs, smiling. "What has life done to you now?" She asks. "Well first Christina killed herself, then all this stuff happened and I met Skylar, then Taylor bullied her and Cam protected her from anyone when he could. After that I got in a fight with Taylor I beat up Cam and then he left Skylar, then you guys kicked me out after that I moved in with the Cam and the other boys like Carter and Matt and then Taylor put up pictures accusing me of being the school fag. After that Cam left Carter and I, I hated Carter cause he was the reason I was being called gay Carter then killed himself Matt found him with his girlfriend Skylar, she attempted by slitting her wrists and long story short Skylar went into a coma then woke up an now has no idea who she is and Matt is pressuring me to tell him what's going on."
She looks shocked as she tries to comprehend what I just told her. "So Skylar is a girl that you liked. After that she somehow ended up with Matt. Carter commuted suicide and then she couldn't take it so she attempted. Next she woke not remembering who she is and you're there, Matt is not. The doctor sends her home with you automatically making her put false trust into you and Matt is completely furious and jealous."
I nod. She sighs and turns back to the stove pouring the milk into the mugs and mixing the cocoa in, topping it with whipped cream and chocolate syrup. "Thanks." I sniffle, cupping the mug, it warms my cold hands. "It sounds like this girl is the source of your problems. I think you should get away from her as soon as possible." I nod.
But I can't. I love her. I promised her. "Alright mom. I'll drop her off at her house tomorrow and that'll be the last time I talk to her." I lie. "That's my boy." She ruffles my hair. I slap her hand away, laughing as Hayes walks in.
"Nash?" I turn to him. Cam said he missed me. I stood up and and walked over. I pulled him into a head lock ruffling his hair. "Aargh! Nash!" He grunts. He tries to get out, I laugh as I release him. He attempts to fix his hair but it's too late his hair looks like a bird's nest.
"So did Tina come thru?" I wink. My mom obviously has no idea what I'm talking about. "You know it. Right now she's real close to being the bae." He smiles. "She got any cute sisters?" I ask. "Depends if you want to be arrested..." I laughed. "How old?" "Eight." I nod. How nice.
"How's school?" "Same old. Same old." I nod.
Hayes and I talk and joke around with mom. I glance at the time. 12:00 AM. "Guys it's getting late I better go." I say. They groan. I simply laugh. "I'll walk you out." Hayes smiles. I throw my arm around my younger brother as we walk to the door. But it flies open and my dad is covered from head to toe in dirt he's still in uniform his blue whistle hanging from his neck. The team won a game. "Nash what are you doing in my house?" He growls. "Look Chad." I don't dare call him dad cause all I feel is anger for him. "I was just leaving. By the way, congrats on the win." I say and brush past him and down the sidewalk.
