4. The Hearts
I gasped as a startling pain gripped my chest, taking my breath away and allowing warmth to flow slowly back into my body. My mouth opened slowly into a silent scream and my fingers dug into the ground beside me, snow cupping in my hands. My eyes flew open in an instant to see a man sitting beside me and pushing something into my chest. Soon, the pain stopped and my scream came to life, shrill and bloodcurdling. I cut it off and then began to groan as my body began heating up. My veins felt as if they were filled with liquid fire and my chest felt as if my heart would beat out of my chest. All of the snow within five feet of me melted and evaporated into the air, and silence was all that could be heard. It was as though nothing existed but me. The sound of my breath echoed into my ears as if they were a loud war drum. "What have you done to me?" I asked, breaking the silence like a thin sheet of ice. The man looked down at me and smiled in a melancholy kind of way. "I gave you my heart, see?" and he pulled back his shirt to reveal a gaping hole in his chest, right over where his heart was supposed to be, empty and abnormally hollow. "y-y-you did WHAT?!?!" I screamed, but he simply ran his hands through my hair, calming me with a single touch. "You were dead, freezing cold, when I got here. I was a demon... and now the demon is in you..." My breath caught, and my mind scrambled to find words, but I hadn't found them before he began talking again. "I know it's a lot to take in, but I have given you a my demonic heart. It WILL change you in positive ways and SOME negative ways... but only time will truly tell. You have a few base powers: regeneration of health, teleportation, and kelting, the ability to speak through your mind. I will train you for the three days remaining in my life... then i must pass on into the void. After all, a demon can only live so long without a heart..." I found my tongue and decided to put it to use. "But, why me?" he simply smiled and said "All will be revealed in due time..."
