3. The Sun

As Zander droned on, complaining about the state of my robotic hand and of how I should take better care of myself, I gazed out the dusty window beside me. The wood frame sagged with age and parts of the original glass we're scattered across the floor leaving the glass window broken and battered.

Gleams if light began to pierce through the glass leaving lines of sunlight across the floor. Another morning, another night gone without sleep. Not that I needed it anymore.

Zander's hands slowly stopped working on mine. I turned and found him gazing out the window with me, his face looking almost as if he longed for it.

"Sad, isn't it?"

"Excuse me?"

Zander turned back to my hand and began to work again but still spoke,"The sun. It just reminds me that I'm less than human." He pulled a sad smile,"It wills away the night and rest humans so desperately need, but we don't need it anymore. Upgrades ended that for us."

At that moment I didn't look at Zander as a kid, but as a young man with a hard life and a longing for the humanity he was robbed of.

I reached my left arm out and stroked his cheek in an attempt to comfort him, he smiled sadly and cupped my hand with his own. I cleared my throat a moment later and we both brought our hands back to our own territory.

I ran my free hand through my dark blonde hair and then rested my cheek in it, "Almost done?"

He nodded as he reapplied my synthetic skin back into place with care. I whispered a thank you before I headed out the door but he stopped me with a silent question.

"What is it like to dream?"

I stopped halfway out the door, looking up at the sky where the sun dwelled. I took a deep breath and then realized what Zander meant and what the sun had taunted me for. I looked back at him.

"It's like touching the stars."
