6. Bleeding Out

LUKE VO:

Pain. Excruciating pain. I can’t even imagine anything worse than this. Help…somebody help. Please.

INT – POLICE STATION

IRVING:

Is he still conscious?

DESIREE:

I don’t know.

KENNETH:

Move aside!

WALLACE:

The kids breathing, ain’t he?

DESIREE:

I think he is.

KENNETH:

He’s alive!

IRVING:

Where was he hit?

KENNETH:

It looks like the lower abdomen.

LUKE:

Awe shit.

IRVING:

Luke! It’s going to be okay!

LUKE:

It hurts.

KENNETH:

Don’t move.

WALLACE:

What are you going to do?

KENNETH:

Me? Well I’m gonna try to stop the bleeding before he bleeds out. You, give me your jacket so I can absorb some of his blood.

DESIREE:

Okay.

IRVING:

How do you know about tending to this kind of wound?

KENNETH:

Didn’t you just hear me? I told you I went to medical school.

WALLACE:

I’ll be damned.

KENNETH:

Jesus, this is bad. The bullet got him good.

IRVING:

Can we save him?

KENNETH:

I might be able to if I had the proper equipment but there’s nothing here.

IRVING:

As God as my witness I’m not losing someone over another person’s stupidity.

(IRVING takes out his map)

WALLACE:

What’s the map say?

IRVING:

It says there’s a small town roughly three miles east of here. There should be a hospital there.

DESIREE:

What if there isn’t?

IRVING:

There’s got to be!

WALLACE:

Then there’s no time to loose.

KENNETH:

Do you all have a vehicle we can try moving him into?

IRVING:

We have my van out front but I’m afraid we all won’t be able to fit in if he lays down.

WALLACE:

What if Irving and I go snatch up the tools and bring them back here for you?

DESIREE:

Will there be enough time?

KENNETH:

It’s better than nothing.

IRVING:

What do you need?

KENNETH:

I’ll make a list for you because frankly, I need a shit ton of meds and tools.

DESIREE:

If he’s staying with Luke, I’m staying too.

WALLACE:

Fine. But as for Mary…well. It might be best if we do this.

(WALLACE takes out a pair of handcuffs)

DESIREE:

What are you doing?

WALLACE:

Handcuffing this crazy bitch to the wall.

DESIREE:

Fine. Just give me the key.

IRVING:

Hurry up with that list, Ken!

KENNETH:

Here you go! Get as much as you can because this kid needs it all.

LUKE:

Please…hurry.

WALLACE:

Let’s go!

IRVING:

We’ll be back as soon as possible.

INT – IRVINGS VAN

WALLACE:

Map says if take a left up here, we should enter Care County.

IRVING:

How ironic. For a town named Care County, they better have a damn good hospital.

WALLACE:

There!

IRVING:

“Now entering Care County. Population-

WALLACE:

Population fuck all. We need to get in, get out, and get going.

IRVING:

Keep your eyes peeled for a hospital.

WALLACE:

Way ahead of you.

INT – POLICE STATION

KENNETH:

Just keep applying pressure.

DESIREE:

How much longer can we go on without any medication?

KENNETH:

I honestly don’t know. I dropped out of school, remember?

LUKE:

Stop reminding me, dammit!

DESIREE:

Luke, he’s the best we got!

LUKE:

I’m sorry. I’m just scared.

DESIREE:

There’s no reason to be scared. Irving and Wallace will be back and we’ll patch you right up. Everything will be okay.

KENNETH:

Yeah Luke. I’ll prove to you all that I can contribute to this group.

LUKE:

Please, just make the pain stop.

KENNETH:

I don’t have any pain killers. Wait…Desiree. I just remembered I still have some booze in my cell down the hallway! Can you go grab it so we can cleanse the wound? The flashlight is over by Mary.

DESIREE:

Right!

(DESIREE runs over and picks up the flashlight)

MARY:

We’re all going to die…

DESIREE:

What did she say?

KENNETH:

Oh no. She’s regained consciousness.

MARY:

We’re all going to die in this very building because of that man’s sins. The Lord said he would raise the dead and he kept his promise. Now we are paying the ultimate sacrifice.

LUKE:

Kenneth, please. I give you permission to wallop her.

DESIREE:

Mary, look what you did! Your insanity got Luke shot.

MARY:

It was meant to be.

KENNETH:

Just go get the liquor!

DESIREE:

Okay.

MARY:

Liquor? The Bible says-

LUKE:

Jesus turned water into wine you Old Testament thumper! I’m dying over here because of you!

MARY:

Hail Mary full of Grace.

KENNETH:

Shut up.

MARY:

These men know not what they do.

KENNETH:

Just shut up.

MARY:

And may those ghouls outside spare no mercy as they unleash their appetite on the bodies of these sinners.

KENNETH:

Do you want to see the light of God!

(KENNETH raises his knife)

MARY:

YES! Yes, I do!

LUKE:

Ken, put the knife down.

KENNETH:

Do you want to see the face of God, Mary?

MARY:

Glory be to the Heavens!

KENNETH:

Do you want to die?

LUKE:

Don’t do it, Kenneth. She’s cuffed to the wall. She can’t hurt anyone. Besides…this won’t earn your trust with anyone.

(Pause)

 KENNETH:

I won’t hurt you. But let me tell you something Mary. That God your worship…he knows I’m holding back my anger.

(KENNETH walks back to LUKE)

MARY:

I knew you didn't have it in you.

LUKE:

Don’t listen to her, Kenneth.

KENNETH:

I’m not. I’m not.

INT – HOSPITAL

(The doors to the hospital open and in walk IRVING and WALLACE)

IRVING:

Alright, we found it. Let’s find the supplies we need and get the hell out of here.

WALLACE:

You said it preacher man.

IRVING:

Wallace. Watch it.

(IRVING points over to where a zombie is walking)

WALLACE:

It’s just a roamer.

IRVING:

Shoot it.

WALLACE:

Hell no. I ain’t wasting a bullet on no loan roamer. Come on, let’s head upstairs.

(The two head upstairs, leaving the zombie downstairs)

WALLACE:

I’ll check this room on the left.

IRVING:

Wait…look over there.

WALLACE:

What?

IRVING:

There’s a machine gun hanging on that coat rack over there.

WALLACE:

….So?

IRVING:

Why would there be a machine gun hanging on a coat rack in the middle of a hospital unless someone was already here?

WALLACE:

Father, it’s the day after the end of the world. All hell has broken loose. It wouldn’t surprise me if pigs were flying. So what if a machine gun is hanging on some-

OLC:

Ahem.

(The two look up to see OLC and a bunch of raiders walk out into the hallway)

WALLACE:

I’ll be damned.

OLC:

They’re alive. I told you all they were alive. Tobin, you owe me ten bucks.

IRVING:

Excuse me? Are any of you doctors?

OLC:

Excuse me?

IRVING:

We’re looking for some medical attention. We need-

WALLACE:

Dammit Irving, drop the search for two seconds and look at the facts! We just found a group of twenty men, all equipped to the brim with machine guns and ammo!

OLC:

I’m sorry but you two should probably keep it down. We just got down clearing this hospital free of fried brains and we don’t want any more hearing you.

IRVING:

I’m sorry. You. Is this you’re group?

OLC:

Of course. Don’t I look like the leader type?

WALLACE:

Hell yeah. Built like a lineman and everything.

IRVING:

Do you have a camp nearby or-

OLC:

No. We’re just passing through.

IRVING:

Look. We need help. We have a smaller group on the outskirts of this town in a little police station. One of our members has been shot and needs medical attention. That’s why we’re here. If you can help us find these tools, you’re more than welcome to join our group.

OLC:

Hm. If we help you, then we’re more than “welcome” to join your group?

IRVING:

Yes.

OLC:

I don’t think so.

WALLACE:

Irving, I don’t like the way this guy sounds-

IRVING:

I never caught your name.

OLC:

You can call me Olc.

IRVING:

Olc?

OLC:

Yeah. It’s Irish. And these are my men. And right now, you have five seconds to drop your weapons before we blow you to kingdom come and leave you in tiny bite size pieces.

WALLACE:

Excuse me?

OLC:

Oh I’m sorry. Are you deaf? Drop the weapons or we’re going to turn you into an all you can eat buffet for the roamers.

IRVING:

Hey now, there’s no need to do this.

OLC:

Five.

WALLACE:

I ain’t giving up Betsy.

OLC:

Four.

IRVING (whispering to WALLACE):

Wallace, is the door next to you locked?

OLC:

Three.

WALLACE:

No.

OLC:

Two.

IRVING:

Then move!

(The two bust open the door and run inside)

OLC:

After them!

(IRVING and WALLACE slam the door shut)

WALLACE:

What now?

IRVING:

The window!

WALLACE:

What about the medicine and tools for Luke?

IRVING:

We can’t get to them now!

(IRVING shatters the window)

IRVING:

Come on! Jump!

WALLACE:

Where to?

IRVING:

Aim for the ambulance!

WALLACE:

The ambulance?

IRVING:

Yes!

(WALLACE jumps. IRVING follows)

IRVING:

Let’s go! Wait, what are you doing?

WALLACE:

Checking the fucking ambulance!

IRVING:

For what?

WALLACE:

The tools.

IRVING:

There’s no time!

WALLACE:

I ain’t leaving empty handed!

IRVING:

Wallace-

WALLACE:

A good solider never leaves a man behind!

IRVING:

Shit.

(The two hop into the back of the ambulance)

WALLACE:

Shit, this place is a goldmine.

IRVING:

But I don’t see any of the medicine.

WALLACE:

Then Luke will have to suffer through the pain.

IRVING:

Two outta three ain’t bad! Okay, let’s go.

WALLACE:

You stay here. I’m driving this bad boy.

IRVING:

We’re not taking my van?

WALLACE:

Fuck no! We’re taking the ambulance.

(WALLACE runs around and starts up the vehicle)

IRVING:

Let’s go!

OLC:

There they are! Shoot em’ down!

WALLACE:

Eat Care County’s Finest, you raiding bastards!

(WALLACE drives at full speed and runs over a few of OLC’s men)

IRVING:

You missed Olc!

WALLACE:

Ah, let that be a message to him.

INT – POLICE STATION

KENNETH:

Here. Keep drinking this.

LUKE:

It stings.

DESIREE:

They should have been back by now.

(The doors open and in rush IRVING and WALLACE)

KENNETH:

Speak of the devil.

DESIREE:

You’re back!

WALLACE:

You bet your ass we’re back.

KENNETH:

You get everything on my list?

IRVING:

Let’s just say we’re hoping you’re the kind of guy who likes looking at the glass half full.

KENNETH:

What do you mean?

WALLACE:

We ran into a little trouble up at the hospital.

DESIREE:

Lurkers?

IRVING:

Worse.

KENNETH:

What’s worse than walking corpses?

WALLACE:

We’ll explain later. We still got the tools but no drugs.

LUKE:

What!?

KENNETH:

That’ll have to do. On my command, start handing me the right tools.

MARY (in a prayer like chant):

Send the sinners straight to hell. Send the sinners straight to hell.

DESIREE:

We’re not taking her with us, are we?

IRVING:

We just can’t leave her here.

WALLACE:

Then we give her a fighting chance. Hey Mary.

MARY:

Hm?

WALLACE:

Here’s the key to the cuffs. Catch.

(WALLACE tosses the key. It lands a few feet away out of her reach)

MARY:

I can’t reach it.

WALLACE:

Then you better start clawing for it.

IRVING:

We’re not leaving her chained to the wall.

DESIREE:

Irving, she’s a risk to the rest of us! Look at what she did to Luke.

IRVING:

I just can’t leave someone behind. It’s not Christian like.

WALLACE:

I thought you gave up your faith a long time ago.

IRVING:

Let’s just focus on saving Luke right now.

KENNETH:

Someone hand me the scalpel.

LUKE:

Oh man…

DESIREE:

Don’t worry, Luke. It’ll be okay.

KENNETH:

Luke, bite down on this belt. It's going to be painful. Okay... here we go.

EXT – HOSPITAL

(OLC looks over the bodies of his men who were run over)

OLC:

Three men. That’s three of my men who got run over by a goddamn ambulance.

WES:

They went that way, Sir. I’m sure we can track them and find out where they went-

OLC:

I want to know where those two are heading so we can crush their fucking spines! Goddamn it.

WES:

Sir, you might want to keep your voice down. There are still fried brains about.

OLC:

Excuse me Wes but are you telling me to be quiet?

WES:

It’s just a precaution Sir-

OLC:

You know the rules, Wes. Never give me any orders. I’m the only one who gives orders around here.

WES:

Yes, Olc. I forgot.

OLC:

You better not forget next time or I’ll personally take my knife to your nasal cavity. Now if you excuse me, I’m going to make sure these bodies stay dead.

(OLC walks over and shoots the corpses laying on the ground)

OLC:

I barely remember their names but I’m sure they were good men, Wes.

WES:

Raymond, Harrison, and-

OLC:

I don’t need to know their fucking names. Names get me attached.

WES:

Sorry, Sir.

OLC:

Hand me that bottle of pain killers we found up in the doctor’s office.

WES:

Here you go.

(OLC downs the entire bottle in one gulp)

WES:

No water, Sir?

OLC:

Waters for pussies. But God knows I sure want some right now.

WES:

You mean water, Sir?

OLC:

No.

(Awkward silence)

OLC:

Well what are you standing around for? Go get the others and let’s find us that run away ambulance!

WES:

Yes, Sir!

(WES runs off as the music starts. “Bleeding Out” by Imagine Dragons)
