Love is a Strange Thing

Until Kara finds out that she is going to be sent away to a boarding school where she will not be allowed out until she graduates, except for very special occasions. Kara realizes love is a strange thing, so strange it can make you do things you wouldn't ordinarily do. Then... Kara and Josh soon find out a secret that could change everything.

13. Partners

When I wake up I hear Daisy talking to someone on the phone. I sit up and look at her. What time is it? She looks at me and says, "Look I gotta go. I'll talk to you later." She hangs up the phone and stares at me, with her mouth wide open. "I heard someone jumped you and Mathew fought him off. I have to say I didn't really believe them, but man you look like crap," she shakes her head smiling.

"Yeah its true so who were you talking to?"

"My mom, but it doesn't matter. So tell me about it," her eyes hazel eyes shine with curiosity.

"Ughhh... I have to tell it again?" I joke.

               "Yes you do."

I tell the story again. She watches in silent, but her face shows her thoughts. Her expressions vary between shock, confusion, and horror. As I near the end of the story she starts to smile. Finally I have to ask, "why are you smiling?"

"He totally likes you. And he doesn't like a lot of girls."

"He does not. There is no way Mathew likes me. He just wants to make out or something."

"He hasn't left you alone since you got here. He's never went after a girl for this long. He's never really had to," she sighs.

"Did you go out with him?"

"Yes... when I first moved here. I didn't know what he was like until we made out and he never talked to me again."

               "I'm sorry," I whisper.

"It's fine. I don't really care. It wasn't anything serious," she shrugs. "You can have him."

"I'll pass. He kissed me today. When he was showing me around. When he saved me earlier he I asked him why he did it and why he carried me back here. He said that for one he couldn't stand by and watch that happen and second because he felt bad for forcing me to kiss him. But you wanna know something weird? I wasn't scared of him like I was with that guy named Bradly. I don't know. I guess its because he didn't hit me and he didn't keep kissing me. I don't know. Its weird I've been thinking about it for awhile."

"He kissed you?! Oh my god!!! Kara that just proves it more. He kissed you then he saves you and apologizes for it. No way. He has never ever done that. He never says sorry for kissing a girl," she exclaims. That was what I was scared of. I don't want him to like me. I don't want anyone, but Josh to like me.

"I don't want him to like me," I admit. "Yeah its good that he was there... but I have a boyfriend. He doesn't need to like me."

                 "I think its sweet."

                 "Whatever. What time is it?"

"8:30. I told the security you had a bad day."

"Thanks. I guess I'm gonna go back to sleep. I have had a bad day. My heads tired of being thrown around and my face is tired of being kissed by guys I don't want to be kissed by." we laugh, but I am not happy about anything that happened today. Except being saved.

Daisy claps off the lights and turns on the t.v. "Good night. I'll wake you up in the morning. Hopefully a little earlier."

"Good night." I roll over and shut my eyes. Then I fall back asleep.

The next morning I wake up earlier than Daisy. I pick up my phone and see what time it is. 6:23. I can already tell that I wont be able to go back to sleep so I get up and walk to my closet to pick out an outfit. Today I wear my light skinny jeans, a black V-neck, and my black combat boots. I bring my long, blonde hair back in a pony tail using a black pony tail. I put on a little bit of eyeliner and some foundation. The little amount of eyeliner makes me look fierce, but its not too much. I use the foundation to cover up the bruise on my cheek, but you can still see the dark purple through the tan powder. I sigh and give up. I walk back out of the bathroom and wake up Daisy.

"Daisy its 6:45. Get up," I whisper as I give her a little shake. She moans and rolls over so her face is in her pillow. "Come on. I'm not waking you up again."

"I'm up. I just gotta wake up for a sec."

I walk over to my nightstand and unplug my phone. I look through my contacts until I find Christina's number. I hit send and wait as it rings. Christina always wakes up at 6:30 so she should be up. "Hey Kara," she answers.

            "How's it going there?"

"Fine. Not really. I hardly have anyone to talk to," she groans.

"Oh come on Christina. You're the cool one. You can make some new friends."

"I'm sure I will after a year and a half of being alone. So how is everything going there?"

"Well that depends. I have a new roommate. Her name is Daisy. She's pretty cool. I already have a guy hitting on me. Don't tell Josh, he'll flip out. Look something happened yesterday."

"Please tell me you didn't you know..."

"God no! No. Someone jumped me at school yesterday," I whisper.

"Please tell me your joking," she whines.

"I wish, but you'll never guess who saved me."

"I've never been good at guessing."

"Well you know how I said someone was already hitting on me?" I ask.

"His name is Mathew and he was the one. I don't get him. He keeps trying to talk to me and take me places. But he's a total player so why cant he just move on to some other girl. He knows I have a boyfriend."

"Geez that place sounds worse than here. And that's pretty bad Kara."

"I know. God I know. I need to get out of here. This place confuses me," I sigh loudly.

"As much as I would love to keep talking I have to go. I've still got a lot to do so call me later or something. Kay?"

"Kay. I still have to call Josh anyways."

"You aren't going to tell him are you?"

"I was thinking about it," I admit.

"Don't you'll just make him anxious."

              "Okay. By Christina."

              "By Kara."

With that we hang up. I search my contacts again and find Josh's name. I need to hear his voice. No more texting. It rings and rings, but no one answers. I call 3 more times, but he doesn't answer. On the last call it doesn't even ring. His phone is turned off. Is he blowing me off? No he wouldn't do that. I put my phone in my pocket. "We gotta go its 7:30," Daisy says.

We walk to school together, side by side. She said she isn't going to let that happen to me again. When we reach the school we stop by our lockers and then we head to math. We are not the last people today. I know where I sit now so its okay. I take my seat, but Mathew isn't here yet. Maybe he's embarrassed of helping me. I wouldn't be surprised. Just as the bell is about to ring Mathew jogs in the classroom and takes his seat. He smiles at me. "I like that outfit on you," he winks. Oh god.

"I thought I would give it a try."

                "How's your head?"

"It's felt better," I let out a light laugh.

"How'd you get the bruise?" some boy asks sarcastically.

                "That's not your problem."

"Oh I know how you got it," he laughs along with a few other people.

"Oh and how is that," I remark.

"Are you sure you want me to say?"

                "Leave her alone," Mathew snaps.

"Awww... does someone have a crush?" he sneers.

"Please. No your just being an ass."

I look at him shocked. Why is he sticking up for me? "Whatever," the boy says and turns back to his friends. "Why did you stick up for me?"

"Cause. He shouldn't act like that."

"Uh umm," the teacher clears his throat. "Quiet class."

The class gets quiet and we begin our lesson. I zone off the rest of class. Tapping my pencil and staring out the window. The rest of the day goes by slowly until I reach my science class. I don't really pay attention until I hear the word partner. I sit up straighter and look around as he explains. "You are going to be getting with a partner of the opposite sex to work on this project. You and your partner are going to get a "baby" and you 2 will be in charge of taking care of that baby for the next month. This will be your last grade of the year so make it good. Now choose your partner." I sit where I am. I look around. I don't really know anyone. I see a line of girls asking Mathew. His eyes find mine and he says something to girls. They leave looking sad as he walks over to me.

"Come on partner," he smiles. I roll my eyes.

                 "Just sit here."

                 "Fine." He sets down.

"Okay now that everyone has a partner, you guys are going to get your baby. You guys can determine who gets the baby when and all that on your own time," he brings out a table covered with babies. He calls groups up one at a time. We go up third.

                 "Which one?" he asks.

"That one," I point to a baby girl, with short blonde hair, blue eyes, and pale skin. She wears a little pink frilly shirt, and white leggings. She looks real. He picks her up and we walk back to our seat.

"Why did you pick this one?"

"Cause when I have kids I want a girl and she sort of looks like me," I shrug. He nods.

"Okay so everyone there is a switch on there back underneath of their shirts to turn them on. Once they are on I will be able to tell when they are sad, when they are happy, and if you guys are taking care of them. You do have to wake up in the middle of the night if they are crying, and hold them, and put them to sleep. The only thing with these is that they do not eat because they are not real. You will bring these to school and take care of them too. Okay... off you go."

The class files out. I hate to admit it, but I'm glad Mathew is my partner. I wouldnt want to work with some random guy. I still cant believe he chose me over all those other girls. Although I never understand why he does the things he does.
