“And if the Thames that ran beside them, sure and silver in the afternoon light, recalled a night long ago when the moon shone as bright as a shilling on this same boy and girl, and if the stones of Blackfriars recalled the tread of their feet and thought to themselves: at last, the wheel comes full circle, they kept their silence.”
Crowds of people rushed past, ignoring the couple entwined by the edge of the bridge; and she had no idea how long had passed. All she knew was Jem. Close to 150 years had gone since they had last been together like this, and yet Tessa knew every groove and curve of his face still, so much that it seemed as if nothing had taken place since their engagement. Jem had his hands tangled in Tessa's hair, but now he gently pulled his mouth away from hers, long lashes reflecting the afternoon sun slightly. "Tessa," he breathed, tilting her face upward slightly, "It's been so long- I thought you had given up on me."
Tessa gazed into his eyes, summoning the memories from so long ago, and smiled, the corners of her mouth lifting into an arch. "Never, James Carstairs, after all we've been through did you still think I'd walk away?" She didn't ask how the Silent Brothers had cured him, or even why, because that didn't matter right now. All that mattered was Jem and Tessa. Tessa and Jem. The wind rustled Tessa's hair, and it fluttered onto his face. "Well," Jem grinned shyly and caught her brown hair, tucking it behind her ear with his gentle hands, "After all we've been through, and after Will-"
His grin faded instantly, and Tessa felt a pang in her heart. Although Will and her had been completely and utterly in love, the bond that the two Parabatai shared was like no other. Where there was Will, there was Jem, and where there was Jem, there was Will. That had been the way it always was, or the way it always had been. Will. The curse that had driven him to ask for help- something that he would never have normally done- was still fresh in her mind, just as much as Jem's former 'condition' was. "Will," She spoke softly, taking his hands in her own, "Was a great man, and he would like nothing more then to see you- us- happy." His raven black eyes, so unlike the silver she had come to know, searched hers for a moment, then seemed to relax. A light smile played on his lips. "I believe 'great' is taking it too far. You know he once tried to feed the ducks at Hyde Park a Poultry Pie?" Jem held her hand up in his and kissed it lightly on the knuckles. Tessa laughed, relieved that he was okay.
Relieved that that were finally back together again, and that they would stay that way.
