Chapter Three

‘Perfect timing. Girls this is Scarlet your new roommate.’

‘Hi Scarlet, I’ve been wondering when you’d come. That bed’s been empty since I got here, but Sybil had told us someone was coming, but that was ages ago,’ said a girl whose chocolate brown hair was pulled pack into a long plait.

‘This is Avani,’ Jade gestured to the girl who had already spoken.

‘I’m Buttercup,’ said a girl with wavy long hair the colour of marmalade. Her hair bounced as she skipped over to her bed and hopped on. Before Scarlet could say a word Buttercup began chattering away about some film called The Princess Bride with a Princess called Buttercup in it, and how her Mum named her after this character because it was her favourite film.

‘Buttercup is a bit of a chatterbox as you’ll soon come to see. Now last but not least this is Naomi,’ Jade said as a girl who was a good head and shoulders taller than Scarlet beamed at her.

‘Good to finally meet you, Avani has been going on all week that she had a feeling that this would be the week. Looks like she was right, I reckon she’s trying to follow in Sybil’s footsteps.’

‘Girls could you help Scarlet settle in. Then show her where to find the dining hall? You’ll be in most lessons with Avani, Buttercup and Naomi, so just ask if you need help getting anywhere.’

‘No problem Jade,’ said Naomi.

A swish of raven black hair and Jade was gone, leaving Scarlet to get to know her new roommates.

They were all really excited and pleased to have Scarlet there, so it wasn’t long before they’d all exchanged details on their background, what school they’d been at, and so on.

‘So how did you discover what you were?’ Naomi asked.

‘Naomi, you can’t just ask that sort of thing, it could be personal, or upsetting,’ said Buttercup. ‘You’ll soon get used to Naomi her mouth opens before her brain engages.’

‘Hey!’ said Naomi and proceeded to throw one of her pillows at Buttercup.

‘It’s okay; I don’t mind talking about it. I accidently made this girl kind of stop getting near me and took her voice away.’

‘Was she trying to pick on you?’ asked Avani.

‘Yeah, she was pretty horrible to most people.’

‘It’s often feeling under pressure or when you’re scared that the magic kicks in.’ Avani seemed to be speaking from experience.

‘Wow, look at your nails,’ Said Naomi as she came over for closer inspection. ‘They’re silver like Sybil’s!’

‘It’s nothing really,’ said Scarlet feeling embarrassed.

Avani and Buttercup came over to look too.

‘That’s amazing, there aren’t many people with that, there’s only been two other known ones in the last fifty years, and that’s Sybil Undine and a former student called Mara Krad.’

‘Cool, we get to be roomies with a super-powered sorceress,’ said Naomi with a big smile.

A bell rang out, ‘dinner time!’ said Buttercup hopping up from Scarlet’s bed.

‘Here,’ said Naomi as she grabbed one of my green cardigan’s from the wardrobe. ‘Better put this on, they like us to wear uniform when all the houses come together.’

As Scarlet put it on she began to feel nervous again, and hoped other students didn’t notice her nails.

‘Don’t worry,’ said Buttercup, ‘you can sit with us, and don’t worry about your nails there’s so many students here, and you wouldn’t believe how weird some of them are!’

Avani put a reassuring hand on Scarlet’s shoulder. ‘What Buttercup means to say is that you’ve got no need to feel different here, we’re all unusual here, in a good way.’

Scarlet did feel she belonged, and felt she’d already met some good friends.

Like Sybil’s office, the dining hall had an ornate wooden door, only one about four times the size.

Inside the hall there was a combination of the elements throughout. Like in the Earth rooms, trees grew through stones and up walls, bowls of fire hung from the ceiling and on walls. The ceiling itself looked as though it was made from clouds, and wind chimes hung in corners. At one end of the hall a wide stream gushed from one side to the other, then out through the wall towards the west wing of Dunstan.

There were many different tables, and students had already begun to take their seats. Scarlet was pleased to see that students from different houses could sit together.

They collected food from a serving hatch and looked for a table where they could sit together. Scarlet noticed the teachers all sitting at one really long table at the far end of the hall. Scarlet could see Cybil chatting animatedly with a man next to her; she presumed he must be another teacher. He had a narrow worried looking face, as if he had the weight of the world on his shoulders.

‘Scarlet?’ a boy’s voice broke into her thoughts.

‘Chris?’ Said Scarlet, hardly able to believe her eyes.

‘It’s so good to see you again,’ said Chris as he hugged Scarlet. ‘I can’t believe you’re here too.’

‘I know, it’s mad, I only got here this afternoon so I’m just taking it all in.’

‘You should sit with us,’ Chris gestured to a table with some students in Fire uniforms. One of which immediately looked over his shoulder in their direction. Scarlet couldn’t help but notice just how perfect his face was. His dark eyebrows formed an arch that framed eyes of pale green ringed with a deep turquoise, Scarlet felt slightly giddy and dazed as she looked into them. His bone structure seemed both angular and smooth, forming a seamless frame for his milky skin. His hair was platinum blonde and shaved close around the back and sides, with a shock of long messy spikes at the front and top. He looked like he’d just stepped out of a fashion magazine.

Avani, Buttercup and Naomi stood just behind waiting for Scarlet. ‘I’d like to but I’m with my roommates, I’m only just getting to know them and they’re showing me the ropes.’

‘They can sit with us too if they like?’

‘Give me a sec, I’ll just check with them.’ Scarlet practically skipped back to her roommates; before she could say anything they were all asking questions.

‘OMG, how do you know Chris? He’s so hot, and his friend Xander is dreamy,’ Naomi was practically bouncing on the spot.

Buttercup’s mouth hung open, she was almost drooling.

Scarlet quickly explained how she knew Chris from school, and how they’d been good friends. ‘He’s asked if we want to sit with him and his friends, what do you think?’

Avani was a little reluctant, but Buttercup and Naomi couldn’t wait to get over to Chris’ table.

Scarlet introduced her new friends to Chris, Buttercup seemed a bit giggly but Chris didn’t seem to mind. When Chris introduced Scarlet and her friends to Xander he said ‘Hi’ to everyone but never took his eyes from Scarlet’s. Xander was quieter than usual but Chris was too preoccupied catching up with Scarlet and answering a barrage of questions from Naomi and Buttercup to notice.

The friends were interrupted by a girl with bronze coloured eyes, and dark waist length hair, flanked by two identical twins. ‘You’re lowering your standards aren’t you Chris?’ Her lips twisted into an undisguised look of disgust.

‘Nina, always a pleasure to see you,’ said Chris sarcasm saturating every word.

‘I thought you only liked to play with fire,’ she said her voice mocking him, a constant smirk on her lips.

‘Go away Nina, I’m not interested in listening to your nonsense.’

‘Bit touchy aren’t you?’ Nina’s turned towards Scarlet, her bronze eyes pierced her with a glare that made Scarlet’s cheeks flush red and hot. ‘So this must be the new girl everyone’s talking about. I suppose you think you’re something special, better than anyone else just because you’ve got this affinity thing,’ she sneered.

Scarlet held her hands palm up ready to say she didn’t want to cause any trouble, but Naomi got in before her. ‘Scarlet’s worth ten of you, everyone knows you’re just stuck up cow.’

Nina was only momentarily lost for words. ‘I suppose she’s going to use that to worm her way in with what’s rightfully mine.’

‘Just get lost Nina we’re not interested in your crap!’ said Xander as he slammed his fist into the table. ‘You think that you’re really something special, but no one is interested in anything you’ve got to say!’

‘Ooh, who needs his blood fix then?’ She smirked.

Xander’s chair made a horrible screeching sound as he pushed it out of his way and stalked off.

‘Just go away, nobody wants you here,’ said Chris.

Nina gave Scarlet a filthy look and without another word turned on her heel and stomped off with her friends.

Chris looked apologetic. ‘Sorry you had to hear any of that Scarlet. You really don’t get much of that here, but Nina is one spiteful cow.’

‘Not to mention Xander’s ex,’ added Naomi.

‘What did she mean that Xander needed his blood fix?’ asked Scarlet.

‘Xander is a vampire,’ Chris could see how shocked Scarlet looked, so he explained that vampires here weren’t like the ones in movies or books. Here they could walk in the sun, and were just like the rest of the students there except for their bloodlust and a few extra powers. ‘It’s not as bad as it sounds though, he doesn’t hunt people or anything. He does drink blood but that’s provided for him, he drinks it like we drink juice.’

‘Is he safe to be around then?’

‘Oh yeah definitely, he just gets a bit grumpy when he’s due for a blood feed. He eats normal food like the rest of us too. He’s not the only vampire here; in fact there are all sorts of crazy shit that’s true here, like werewolves and fairies.’

‘I guess I’m going to have to get used to this. It’s been one hell of a long and weird day.’

‘It’s going to be great having you here, kind of like old times, but better.’

After dinner Scarlet and her roommates headed back to the North wing.

‘Do you want to hang out in the common room?’ Buttercup asked.

‘If it’s okay I think I just want to get back to the dorm.’

‘I don’t blame you I just want to sleep, and dream of Chris.’

            ‘Naomi, you’re incorrigible,’ said Avani.

‘Hey, did you see the way Xander was looking at Scarlet?’ Naomi nudged Scarlet.

‘I don’t think he was,’ said Scarlet. ‘Chris said he was grumpy because he needed blood, it was probably just that.’

‘I did notice him looking at you too though,’ said Buttercup.

‘He’s definitely into you,’ said Naomi.

‘I guess he was kind of cute.’ Scarlet couldn’t help but smile a little, it felt good to fit in and feel a part of something like this.
