Ian and Mason had Tod pinned down. I felt a knife in my hand. I took it and put it to his chest.
"Have fun in hell, bastard.", I said.
He smiled "I'll save you a seat." I put the blade through his heart. Tod fell to the floor and blood pooled around him. The knife disappeared.
Mason hugged me and we left. The growls and yelps of pain subsided, closely followed by thunderous paws running for their lives. Tod's followers had retreated.
Ian picked up a woman and carried her outside. She was barely breathing and I don't think she will make it.
Evan was on his knees in the center of the field. Bree was beside him. I intruded on his thoughts and found that they had counted the dead. 35 of our pack was lost. I was sad and surprised at the same time. I thought we would have lost more than that.
Mason sat beside his parents and wrapped his arms around them. Ian was with Rose tending to the worst wounds, including the woman he had been with earlier.
I stood there looking at my hands; they still had Tod's blood on them. I was relieved he was gone, but I can't help but wonder if it was worth it.
My head was pounding and the ground came rushing up to meet me. Someone was yelling my name, but my world was already black.
I didn't see Kyra hit the ground. I just turned around to see her passed out. Ian and Rose were already there trying to wake her up.
"She has been through a lot. She just needs to sleep.", Dad said. I picked her up and followed my parents. They were holding hands and for some reason that made me feel better. Ian was walking beside me carrying Nikki and Garth was limping as fast as he could trying to get home to his family.
When we got back to the house everyone came rushing out at once. I went through the back entrance and took Kyra to our room, although I would have rather went to the cabin, but we let Garth and Suzie have that when the twins were born.
I lay on the bed with Kyra thinking about everything that had happened, all the people we lost today. She sighed in her sleep and moved closer to me. I fell asleep to her breathing and slept until late in the afternoon the next day.
Nikki had lost a lot of blood, but she was alive. I was sitting next to her bed when she woke up.
Nikki smiled at me.
"You scared the hell out of me.", I told her.
"I could say the same about you.", she responded.
I took her hand. "I'm glad you're alright."
"Did...did she do it? Did she kill him?"
"Is she alright?"
"I think so...she's asleep now."
We sat in silence, until Rose came in.
"Good you're awake. You lost a lot of blood. I can't watch you all night because there are more serious injuries to tend too. Ian you are not allowed to leave this room unless I say you can, alright?"
"Alright." Then she left.
"Guess I'm stuck here.", I said and Nikki laughed.
"You can leave if you want...I'll be fine.", she responded. I shook my head.
"I'm not leaving. I care about you."
"Well then lets play a game, I'm bored." She tugged at the IV in her arm. I smacked her hand.
"Stop that! You need that, Nikki."
"I don't want to sit here." She tried to get out of the bed, but I pushed her back down.
"You are so damn stubborn. Sit down!", I said.
"No! You sit down!"
We stared at each other for a moment. Then she did something that surprised me.
Nikki leaned in my direction; our noses were almost touching.
"Please...please let me up." She batted her eyes at me and I'll admit it was working.
"Hmm...no.", I said. She frowned at me and sat back against the rail.
I new as soon as I turned my back she would get up, yank the needle out of her arm, and head for the trees. I needed to make her stay.
"I know as soon as I look away you'll be gone." I told her. "What can I do to make you sit still?"
She looked at me for a moment, thinking. "Kiss me." I smiled.
I scooted towards Nikki and put my hand on her back and pulled her closer. I was about to kiss her when Mason slammed the door open. His face was red and he was sweating.
"Something is wrong with Kyra! She's having seizures and she stopped breathing!", he yelled.
I ran and Nikki followed me. Mason led us to his room. What I saw scared me.
Kyra's eyes were rolled back in her head, looking around franticly. She was shaking and her face was blue and quickly turning purple. Sweat covered her face. Evan came in.
"What's happening?", he asked.
"She has been through a lot. She can't handle it. Help me get her breathing again.", I explained, recognizing the symptoms. I had gone through something similar when Emily had died, but Kyra's cries had pulled me out of it.
Evan helped her breathe while I walked into her mind. I closed my eyes and concentrated. Nikki put her hand on my arm as I slipped through Kyra's defenses.
