Hermione and Ginny decided that the best solution was to go to Azkaban. They sent an owl ahead to arrange a meeting with the head ministry official there, and arrived a day later with an appointment with Darrius Picklebottom. He was a very short, stout man and appeared as though his height was not an impediment to his ability to hit people. He looked as though he did that a lot. He was dressed in a smart pinstriped suit, bowler hat and a bow tie that looked like it belonged on a giant, rather than a 4 foot tall wizard.
The pair entered a dark, dusty room that was apparently the short man's office and were curtly offered a cup of tea and the smallest biscuit known to man. They then got strait to business. "We are on a quest to find all the last remaining Death Eaters and bring them to your prison. So... we were wondering if you had a list of all the Death Eaters who had escaped and if we could borrow it..." asked Hermione, cautiously.
"Ha! No, of course not! You just want to make a laughing stock of my prison and get it shut down!"
"No, honestly, we are friends of Harry Potter..."
"OUT!" He swung his wand in a vigorous arc and slammed the door in their face. They now stood in the sloppy mud outside the main gate and screamed as a Dementor swept down towards them, making a sucking motion with its lips... A guard pointed his wand and looked sternly at it. It glided away, leaving the pair and an annoyed looking guard.
"We know what we do now?" Asked Hermione, as they walked away.
"We go to the minister and get the list for ourselves."
And with that they apparated to a small London side street and dialed the number on a vacant phone booth. They slid down and ended up in the ministers office with a cup of tea and the smallest biscuit known to man. They tried again to get hold of the list and after much persuasion and complaints about a Mr. Picklebottom, they finally got hold of the list.
They looked down it as they walked through an empty London street. "Look!" pointed Ginny, "Lucius Malfoy! I've always wanted to get my hands on that little brat! Now we have a chance, and the minister for magic's approval!"
"Point - he his a stinking little twerp. Let's go make him squeal!"
They sat in the Malfoy's house with a jug of tea and a plate of biscuits and they discussed how the Malfoys had changed over the last few years. Lucius explained how Narcissa was now a judge in the ministry, and how Draco was studying charms in France. Suddenly Ginny stood up, wand drawn - "I know you think you've changed, well, you haven't. Once a Death Eater, always a Death Eater! You need to collect your things and come quietly to Azkaban!"
"No! Please! Don't send me back there!" Lucius began to sob "It's horrible! All happiness is lost and then insanity and depression take over! Please! Not back there!" He was on his knees looking down at Ginny's feet. After a long pause of sobbing, she finally decided to put her wand back in her cloak and pull Lucius to his knees.
"I'm sorry. I didn't realize how much you were Voldemort's slave and only complying to save your family. We won't bother you again! I promise!" And with that the pair left the room and in to the main hall. A large table in one corner was filled with letters and notes, and Hermione went over to look, on impulse. She found something, tucked it in her pocket and left, with one last apology to Lucius.
