"You need a break." Francesca told me as we sat down in a coffee shop. For weeks, I have been avoiding Harry since the day I saw him at work that first day. "I don't need one." I told her as I took a sip of my coffee.
Zayn and I have suddenly grown a lot closer. He was just so nice to me, but I still considered it to be an act that he played. "Don't fight me Stella Taylor. You need to get your mind off that man. He's given you nothing but sadness." she said.
I was about to roll my eyes at her when she pointed a finger towards my direction. "Don't. You. Dare." Did she have to emphasize every word? Yes. Yes she did, only to get her point across.
Eventually she got me to agree to go to a party her friend, Krista was holding at her house. The night of the party came and Francesca introduced me to Krista. "C'mon, I'll introduce you to one of my good guy friends." Krista grabbed my hand and pulled me along with her.
. . .
I couldn't seem to get Stella out of my mind. Weeks had passed and we hardly spoke. Sophie and I were attending an engagement party. "Harry!" Louis greeted me with an embrace as he gave me a pat on the back. "Hey Lou!" I smiled.
It had been so long since the last I saw Louis. We pulled away and I was greeted with a hug from Eleanor. Eleanor Calder, a lovely brunette with brown eyes, was Louis' fiancee. I was proud of him to have met a girl like her. "I'm glad you joined us."
Her warm voice remind me of Stella. They were similar in a lot of ways, except for hair color, eye color, and height. The engagement party was a lot of fun, but I couldn't seem to enjoy my time there. "What's wrong mate?" Louis asked me.
I stood outside on the patio, reminiscing about the days when we were together. Sophie could never compare to the girl Stella is. I stayed silent when Louis asked his question. "Thinking about Stella, aren't you? Just apologize to her." he said.
"It's not that simple Louis." I told him. "Stella, she hates me now. I messed up in high school. She was literally the best girlfriend I've ever had and I lost her, just like that." I sat down on the chairs and buried my head in my hands.
How am I ever going to get her back? I asked myself, thinking that she could be moving onto someone else. "We'll think of something Harry." Louis said.
. . .
I pushed the guy away from me. Who knew that I would be locked in an empty room with a guy I barely know? Good friends? Yeah right. I stormed out of the room while adjusting my dress and went downstairs. "How'd it-"
I stormed out of the house even before Krista finished her sentence. I was fed up with assholes trying to get in my pants. I was not going to let that happen to me again. Francesca followed me out of the house. I knew because she was calling my name.
"Can't there be just one decent guy in this world?" I asked her as we walked to her car. She understood why I was mad and didn't ask. "Well, I'm meeting a friend of mine tomorrow. Maybe you should come with?" she asked.
She started the car and drove back to the building. "What's he like?" I asked her.
"He's real sweet. Tall, has an athletic build to him, and he has a great personality. I think you'll like him." She answered. I told her that I'd think about it when we entered the building and rode the elevator to our floor.
We bid each other good night and entered our respective apartments. I closed the door and turned on the lights to see a vase full of roses sitting on the table. I was confused as to who had gotten into my apartment.
You weren't home, so I dropped these off. I hope you still like roses. I'd like to see you again soon. Call me and we can arrange a date and time.
Zayn had dropped these off? They were such beautiful roses, dark red. I read over the note again and turned it over to see Zayn had left me a phone number. I took out my phone and held it in my hand for a moment, contemplating.
Was it a bad idea to go on a date with your ex? Yes. My subconscious answered and immediately, I shut her up. It wouldn't hurt. I dialed the number and after one ring, Zayn picked up. "I knew you'd call." Zayn said, then cleared his throat. "I mean-"
I smiled at the memory when Zayn had been a little too overexcited about going out for ice cream with me for our first date. He cleared his throat afterwards to prove that he was a 'man.' I giggled at him and told him that I didn't mind.
"It's okay. I'm free this Saturday at six." I told him.
"Great. I'll pick you up at your apartment." We had a short conversation before we hung up the phone. This was going to be one hell of a story to tell my friends. I thought to myself and decided to get ready for bed.
The next morning, Francesca and I walked down to local cafe to meet her friend. As soon as we entered, she was greeted with a hug from the guy whom she described. "Hey Francesca." The guy smiled as he greeted her, then they pulled away.
"Liam, I'd like you to meet-"
"Stella?" Liam was still the same height as he was in high school, but he looked a bit older. Four years can change people and it definitely changed him. He was slightly more built than in high school. He had grown in a bit of facial hair, which I thought suited him.
I smiled, "It's good to see you Liam." I was just as surprised to see him stand before me. Before anything else happened, he reached out and pulled me into a hug. It wasn't long that I finally let it all out. I couldn't hold back the tears any longer. I wasn't going to hide my emotions anymore.
I hugged him tighter and remembered back when we graduated from high school. I was going to miss Liam more than anyone in the entire school. He and I have distanced ourselves from one another, slowly losing contact. "I've missed you." He said as we pulled away.
I wiped my tears away and smiled. "I missed you more." The three of us sat down at the table and began to have a chat with each other. I have never laughed so hard in my life when I was with Liam. We shared our stories about high school with Francesca.
"You two never thought of dating?" Francesca asked us. Liam and I exchanged glances before I shook my head in reply. "The thought never really crossed our minds." Liam had sat in the chair beside me and casually slung his arm around my shoulders, but rested it on the chair.
"I'm sure you had a crush on him Stella." she said. I looked at Liam and thought about high school for a while. It was then I realized that it wasn't me who had a crush on Liam, but he was the one who had a crush on me. Why didn't I see it before?
Was it because I was blinded by my past? Was it because I wanted to move forward and continue on into the future? Why didn't I see myself being with Liam? You only saw him as a friend. My subconscious answered me and once again, she was right.
"You two would make the cutest couple." She added and took a sip of her drink. Liam hadn't removed his arm from my chair and I began to lean back into him. I could feel his hand gently touch my shoulder, his finger tips brushing against my arm.
It sent chills up my spine. They were chills I haven't felt in such a long time, not the bad kind. I couldn't simply fall for Liam when I still had feelings for Harry. I didn't tell Francesca or Liam about it. I didn't want to tell them.
Harry had a girlfriend, so it wouldn't matter if I cared about him. I wondered if he still cared about me. I shook the thought out of my head. It was ridiculous to think that Harry would still care about me, or would still have feelings for me after what happened that night.
Afterwards, the three of us were soon going to part ways. Liam was going to head off in one direction while Francesca and I were going in the other. "Actually, I'd like to catch up on some things with Liam." I told Francesca who was heading back to our apartment building.
"Understandable. Talk to you guys later." Francesca gave the two of us hugs before heading down the street back to the building. "Mind taking a stroll around Central Park?" Liam asked with a smile. I told him that I didn't mind and we began to walk down the street towards the park.
It was a beautiful sunny day in the city, and even the park was beautiful. Liam and I walked down the pathway, surrounded by the tall trees. We reminisced about the good old days when we were in high school together, then talked about what we were up to recently.
"Good to hear that you're liking your new job." Liam smiled as he placed his hands into his pockets. I hadn't mentioned Harry to him yet, or Zayn either. I was worried about his reaction. "It's great. I made a lot of new friends." Immediately, I told him about my co-workers and how one of the girls didn't like me.
"It's normal to have competition Stel." He let out a light chuckle as I nudged him lightly. He told me about his job and I was disappointed that we weren't working in the same building. It would be nice to know someone other than Harry.
"I ran into someone when I started working at the company." I told him.
"He lives here?"
"I suppose. I mean, I would figure that he lives here if he works at the same company as I."
"Nothing really. He has a new girlfriend. Typical Harry, right?"
"Yeah, typ-" Liam's statement was soon interrupted when I heard someone call out my name. It sounded so familiar, and it was until I finally turned around to see who it was. Harry.
