When you lose someone you care about nothing else matters in the world; your world becomes one big black hole, you lose all the happiness in your body, mind, soul and spirit.

Hayden Rivers was always the shy type who was always with her older brother, their bond grew even closer when they were abandoned by their parents.

That all changes when her older brother (Ryan) dies and leaves her alone in the big, cruel world, she feels like an ant compared to everyone else and is lost with no sense of direction

At his funeral she doesn't expect to cross paths with Russell Scott

She witnesses him about to kill someone and that creates more problems in her already twisted life

Russell Scott is the most feared guy not only in their school but around the small town the live in; He has tattoos, deals, drugs, fights,
has anger issues that get him in a lot of trouble and his own skeletons in his closet.

No matter how many people tell her to stay away she just can't

40. Chapter 2

Hayden wrapped the scarf around her neck tighter and stuffed her gloved hands into her coat pocket. She walked into the apartment building and put her index finger into her mouth pulling the glove off.

She pressed the elevator button and stood waiting.

When she reached the hallway the scent of Italian food invaded her nostrils which only meant one thing...Mark was cooking.

She opened the door and was immediately greeted with some soft music playing on the radio they bought when they moved in together

“Smells amazing” She smiled taking off her coat and Scarf

“New recipe, Hope you’re hungry” he smiled

“Starving “she answered and made her way towards him “Need help with anything?” she asked rolling her sleeves up

“No, you just go and sit it will be ready in five”

Hayden didn’t complain and made her way to the vintage table with mismatched chairs. Their apartment was quite cosy and small but they managed

“Did I get any mail or messages?”

“Yes, Sam said she would be coming down to visit from Indiana” Hayden smiled at the mention of her other best friend

“And also this came for you” He pulled out what looked like some sort of flower with a small card attached

She softly took the flower in her hand and noticed it was a beautiful blush noisette. Her fingers slowly opened the little card. And she recognised the messy handwriting. Russell’s name was scribbled across.

He sent her a rose?

“So this is ‘The guy’”

Hayden nodded her head and licked her lips. Seeing him at the charity a week ago really messed with her head.

“Where can I get me one of those” Mark sighed pouring some wine into two glasses

She looked at the hot food in front of her and immediately dug in “What did you do today”

“I worked the entire fucking day. How was class?”

“Long and boring today”

“I kind of need a favour” he added

“What?” she asked curiously

“I need you to help me score an interview with Russell De Luca”

“I can’ do that” she argued

“Oh Come on Hayden, please, please”

Hayden honestly didn’t want to see him but she would have to.

“I’ll think about it”

“Well to a stress free night” he raised his glass clinking it with hers

She giggled and took small sips of the red liquid.

“How do I look? Fuck worthy?” Mark asked standing in some jeans and a very trendy button down shirt.

Hayden paused the movie she was watching and turned to look at him “You look good. Going out?”

“Another date with Scott” he smirked fixing his already perfect brown hair “I know we were supposed to have movie night”

“It’s no big deal, I’m tired anyway” Hayden smiled and he offered her a smile.

“Okay...I will be back tomorrow and we can grab some coffee”

She nodded her head and watched him leave.
