I wake up to an unfamiliar room. At first I just stay lay down and stare up at the ceiling. It's clean. Too clean. And it stinks in here of hand sanitizer. This is when I remember everything that happened.
Every second, minute, hour of last night comes flooding back in one big tsunami. I lift up my head to look at my stomach and see that there is a dressing over the wound. There's also a bandage around my left leg and bruises all over but other than that, I'm fine. Although, I'm no longer in my blood-stained silk dress, I've been changed into a crisp white hospital gown, with an open back. I plan on going back to sleep but just as I lie back down, a doctor walks in.
"Hello, I'm Doctor Smith," he says politely. I mutter a hi back. "Well, you were quite lucky, miss Jones! I take it you don't remember much of last night?" He asks, half laughing at me and half deadly serious. "No, I remember up to getting into the ambulance" I tell him. "Well, as soon as you got to the hospital we examined you and decided we had to operate straight away. You see, a piece of glass from the windscreen of the car, had been pushed too far into your stomach for us to pull out without cutting your stomach open to reach it." He informs me, "you were loosing blood rapidly and if we had left it any longer, it could have been fatal."
I let out a gasp. I nearly died? Just the thought of it makes me feel sick! "As for your leg," the doctor continues, "we have taken an X-ray and it shows that you have fractured your femur" he places a pair of crutches against the wall beside the bed that I'm on.
"You will need these to get around but for now, you must be on complete bed rest and not get up at all until we say so" I sigh and agree to the rules. Then he gives me some tablets for the pain. "What about Niall? Is he okay?" I ask the doctor before he leaves. "He's fine, just a few bruises but nothing serious. Would you like him to visit?" "Yes please!" "Okay, I'll send him over. Anything else?" He asks before opening the door. "No, I'm okay, thank you" he walks out of the door and down the corridor.
Before I know it, I have fallen back to sleep again. I peel open my eyes and notice that someone's holding my hand. I turn my head to the right and see Niall sat on a chair, half-asleep but still clasping my hand in his, like he's never letting go. "Oh, sorry, am I hurting you?" He asks nervously and let's go of my hand. "No, no it's fine" I tell him, sitting myself up carefully in the bed. Niall smiles at me, "how you doing?" "I've been better" I reply a bit too harshly than I tended. "I'm so sorry, that I let Harry play that stupid game. I should have known." Niall puts his head in his hands, his blonde hair flopping down in front of his face. "It's not your fault. I should have moved out of the road when I could... Hey, thanks for trying to save me, I'm just sorry that you had to get hurt because of me." I say apologetically. Niall doesn't look up or move. I wonder for a second if he's crying but then he lifts his head. He mutters a reply that I don't quite hear and then stands up.
"I best go, your mother wanted to see you. She's probably waiting outside." He stands there awkwardly for a second then bends down and kisses me on the forehead! Then he stands up and walks out of the door "bye, see you later."
The door clicks shut and I notice that my face is burning! I must have blushed so bad! And I can't stop grinning! He actually kissed me! What if he asks me out?! I've only known him for 3 days and already he had saved me twice! His crystal clear, blue eyes, stick in my mind the whole day long.
This is crazy. I get a few more visits from various people. First Niall, then my mum, then the girls, then the boys, then Dr Smith. I also got a visit from another Nurse type lady who brought me some lunch and dinner. My mother was very serious about the situation and instructing me never to play in the road again and giving me massive lectures while the girls couldn't stop crying and kept saying how glad they were that I was okay. The boys however, didn't cry at all, and kept on apologising. By the end of the day, I was so worn out that I dropped straight off to sleep. I'm in the road.
Harry and Zayn are shouting, yelling, gesturing for me to move. Niall. His scream, ringing in my ears. He's shouting my name. I am about to look around at him when the bonnet hits my stomach. Stealing me of my breath. Knocking the life out of me. I'm flung upside down, the smashing of the glass. The sharp shards piercing my skin, stabbing at my insides. The blood. I scream. A loud, desperate, high pitched shrill.
"Saph! Sapphire! It's okay, it was just a dream." I open my eyes and Niall's gorgeous face stares down at me, a look of concern on his face. I notice that he's holding my hand again. And the chair next to my bed is covered in a blanket. He must have stayed with me all night. "Sorry, I just... Sorry" I start crying and I can't stop. Tear after uncontrollable tear streams down my face like a waterfall. Still holding my hand, Niall gently wipes away my tears with the back of his hand and gives me a hug, careful as to not catch my stomach. Then he looks me in the eyes and smiles. "It's okay, I'm not going anywhere, I'm staying right here." He tells me. Then he edges his chair closer to mine, still holding my hand in a firm grasp. I slowly lower my head until its resting on his shoulder and manage to drop back off again.
Later in the morning, I wake up to find myself in the same position that I fell asleep in. Niall is asleep, but he isn't snoring or drooling or anything. He actually looks quite cute while he's sleeping. I watch him for a while, admiring his beautiful features. After what feels like an hour, Niall wakes up with a yawn. He immediately looks at me and asks how I am and I reply with a sarcastic "never been better!" He laughs at this and gets up to leave "the doctors will be wondering where I've disappeared to." He laughs nervously. "Why? Are they keeping you in? I thought it was just a couple of bumps and bruises?" I ask. "Yeah, they just want to make sure I'm definitely okay. I'm having a couple of X-rays today and if they're all clear then I'm a free man!" We both laugh at this. "So what happens with us after this?" I ask anxiously. I can't even look him in the eyes. I can feel my face burning and my heart is going at a thousand beats per minute . "I don't know... I really want to see you again and not in a life or death situation!" I laugh, so relieved that he wants the same as me! "Yeah, we should meet up sometime." I say and he nods his head to agree. I swear my heart skipped a beat. Or two. Or three... Who knows, maybe I'm really dead! I can't believe how close we are, even though we hardly know each other. For the rest of the day, it's visits all over again.
Mum comes and brings me some proper clothes and my tooth brush and tooth paste and other stuff, as the doctor says I have to stay here until I'm off bed rest. Hopefully, that will only be a couple more days depending on whether my stomach heals nicely or not. Doctor Smith says everything is going well though so I'm not too worried anymore.
Courtney, Ellie and Aysha also visit. Courtney has a bunch of flowers for me - roses to be precise. Aysha brings a box of Belgium chocolates, my favourite! And Ellie brought me a book called 'Artichoke Hearts' I've already read it and found it amazing! Liam, Harry, Zayn and Louis also visit again and bring more chocolates and a 'get well soon' card. Inside it has four messages from each of them;
To Sapphire, I can't say just how sorry I am. I hope your better soon, Harry x
Dear Saph, Get well soon :) hope we can still be friends? Would love to meet up ;) Love from Zayn x
To Saph Get well soon! Enjoy the chocolates! From Louis
To Sapphire, Sorry for everything that happened, get better soon! Love from Liam
They all seem so nice. I thank them for the chocolates and the card. As soon as they leave and the door clicks shut, Niall opens it again. "Hey, how was the X-rays?" I ask. "All clear!" He says, grinning. "Yay!" I say overly sarcastic.
"What's wrong with you?" He says, sitting down next to me with a frown. "I'm going to miss you, that's all," I tell him. And to be honest, it's true. That first day on the plane, I never thought I'd ever see him again and now I don't want him to leave. "You won't need to miss me!" He says and leans over to give me a gentle hug. "I will visit you every day in hospital and when you get out of here, we can meet up every day," I don't even know what to say to him. We just sit there, smiling at each other. It's awkward. "So how's your stomach feeling?" Niall finally asks. "A lot better actually, the doctor says I could be out by tomorrow!" "Well that's good news I suppose." "Yeah," I can't wait to get out of here. "Apparently I've got to use crutches to get around for 6weeks! And I can't even use them!" Niall laughs a little. "I'll show you." He says getting up from the chair and grabbing my crutches.
I have no idea what he's thinking but I peel back the bed sheets and twist myself round to the edge of the bed. At least I've got normal clothes on now! Niall comes over and sits next to me. First he shows me how to hold them best. Then he helps me to stand up. My foot sends a sharp pain up my leg and I quickly take the pressure off and stand on one foot. Niall comes behind me and slips his arms under mine, placing his hands over mine on the crutches.
He guides me around the room, telling me how to balance my weight between the crutches and how to hop along. It's a lot harder than he makes it look! I start to get the hang of it. Move the crutches forwards, hop so that your level with them. Crutches, hop, crutches, hop, crutches hop. Then as I'm hopping, one of the crutches slip and I'm about to fall sideways when Niall's strong arms catch me and lift me back to my feet. "Nearly!" He says, laughing. I try to laugh it off and carry on practising. After about an hour, we finally get worn out and collapse on the bed. I cant stop laughing and I'm not sure why. Niall helps me back into bed and gets his jacket to leave. I look outside through the window and see it's getting late. Not too late though. I let him go anyway and go to sleep as I'm exhausted.
The next day, I wake up to the same empty room. No comfy shoulders to lean on. It seems so lonely and quiet without any visitors. Not for long though as I'm greeted by Doctor Smith not long later. "Morning!" He says cheerily. "Hi Doctor Smith! Any good news?" I ask. "Yes actually, we've taken some tests and they're all clear. Your stomach also seems to be healing well so this means that you can go home today!" I gasp. I'm going to be out of here already! I can't wait!
During the day, I get a few more visits. Mum pops in a couple of times to help me pack my bag of clothes and then drop them off at the house. I also get a visit from the girls who start signing my crutches and drawing on them. And as promised, Niall and the boys visit to say get well soon and see how I am. At 4:30, mum comes to pick me up. First we have to sign a couple of things and then get signed out at the main reception. After this, mum helps me hop along the car park and get into the car and we drive back to the villa.
