5. The first night.
That night all of them had broken sleep, starting at noise in the undergrowth. One time Ruth thought she saw something and poked Dante awake, only for him to say it was a deer and for her to go back to sleep.
She sat quietly with her hands clasped over her knees and thought about what the hell was going on. Her life had been pretty good, apart from school. She would rather spend time at the family farm with her animals and beloved horse, Bailey. She wondered if he would be ok on his own at the farm and made a mental note to go and see him soon and get some more things from home.
"Are you ok?" Ruth jumped slightly but relaxed as Dante sat beside her on one of the branches.
"Yeah" She sighed, "Just... thinking" He smiled sadly at her and put a gentle hand on her shoulder "As soon as it's over, it'll be ok" she looked at him and noticed how his eyes seemed to shimmer in the pale moonlight, she smiled.
"You remind me of her" he said. His eyes seemed to brim with tears and then suddenly, as Ruth blinked, he looked fine again. Ruth was too tired to question him about 'her' and closed her eyes sleepily. "You should get some rest" Dante said as he let her lean on his shoulder, her eyelids heavy, "I'll keep watch, you just, sleep" He stared out into the darkness with the girl on his shoulder and waited for the first morning sunshine to creep through the trees.
