In the year 3000, Earth became over populated. There was no place to live and many people died of starvation. Then the Leaders of Land 9, where people once called United States, thought of an idea. With the idea of natural selection, they decided on a plan in which those that are "useless" or "weak" will be "erased" from Earth. Those people with a tag on them will be hunt down by everybody on Earth and "erased." Therefore, the start of the hunting begins.
Sophie, who live in Land 9, District 101, is a weak but cheerful and intelligent person. Despite losing her mother and father when she was six years old, and despite her uncle and aunt, her guardians, treating her like a servant, Sophie looks forward to each day with a smile. Because of the incident that also killed her parents, half of her body is functioned by technology. What will happen when a tag is put on her? Will she survive or will she be "erased"?

3. Birthday

"Wake up, Sophie. It is time to wake up."

I sat up immediately. I rubbed my eyes and looked up to see Hue, my android. "Morning, Hue."

Hue was an android called Model PET21. They were androids that were given to every citizen in this world at their birth. However, if the citizens don't take good care of PET21, they will run away. They were like computers that are alive.

"Sophie, you need to wake up, or else your aunt will yell at you."

My eyes widened. I hurried and got dressed. I was about to rush out of the room when Hue stopped me.

He hold out a box that was clumsily wrapped. "Happy birthday, Sophie."

I blinked a few times, taking in what he was saying. "Wait! Today is my birthday? What is today's date?"

"Today is April 30, 3014. I knew you would forget, so I prepared you a gift."

I knew what was in it but I still acted surprised. "Wow! It is a queen chess piece keychain! Thank you so much!" Hue has been giving chess piece keychains to me since I could remember.

If it was possible for an android to blush he would have. He imitated a cough twice and then flew to the kitchen.

Hm… so today is my birthday. Maybe I should go to the border to get something for myself.

At the border(a place that separated District 89 to District 101 from other districts.), I looked through every window as I pass by each shop. One thing every shop owner hates is for someone to go into a shop and end up not getting anything. That is why I only go into a shop when I know what I want to buy.

As I walked pass the windows, something caught my eyes. Through a window I saw a chess set.

"Daddy, daddy, I want to play that thing you always play." I pointed at the chess set that my dad left on the table.

My dad put the book that he was reading down. "Really?! It would be hard for you. Are you sure you want to play?"

I pouted. "Don't look down on me, dad. Maybe I could surpass you."

I giggled at the memory. "I did end up surpassing him, although I only said that on a whim." I cocked my head to the side. "There was something he said one time… What was it?" I looked up. "Ah! He said…"

"Checkmate! Daddy, you lose." I smiled at my skills. Whether my dad lost on purpose or not, I did not care. I just felt content that I was improving.

"Sophie, babe, you are getting better and better at it. You will definitely be a controller one day."

"What did he mean by that, anyways?" Tears formed, but I blinked it back. "No! I can't cry. I can not waste my life that my parents sacrificed theirs to protect. I must smile." I smiled a reassuring smile to myself.

Just then a small boy, probably around the age of 9, ran towards me. He hugged me from behind. "Big sister, save me! I don't want to die!"

I turned to look at him. "What is wrong? Are you okay?" However, what I end up seeing was a blinding light on his right hand. I heard of it but I had never seen it before.

About a hundred of people came a few seconds after. When they saw the boy behind me, one of them said, "Are you trying to protect someone that have to be 'erased?'"

"He is just a small boy. Why do you have to do this to him?" I stood there, not moving a step.

The same person said, "We have no choice; we want to survive. The only way is to kill- I mean 'erase' the people that are labeled."

I was about to say something, when the boy suddenly grabbed my right arm. He was trembling. "I… am… sorry! I don't want to… die! I am sorry! I don't want to die!"

I looked at him, despite the blinding light. "What are you saying?" Suddenly, I felt a sharp pain surge through me. I gasped and winced out of pain. I heard the boy winced before he pressed his right hand to my right arm. I almost screamed from the pain.

"I am sorry! I don't want to die," the boy repeated. Then he said, "I want to live, so I have to do this." He took a deep breath. "E-eject."

I felt like something was pushing its way into my arms. I looked down to see blood smeared all over my right arm. I looked back up, shocked.

The light from the boy's right hand disappeared. "N-nobody can kill me now. The tag has been removed so i-if you kill me you have to go to the headquarter." He looked up at me and said, "I am sorry, big sister. I had no choice." With that, he ran away.

Everybody was shocked. We all stood there for a few seconds before a little girl said, "Look, mama! That girl, her hand is shining. It says," she squinted her eyes to read the text on my arm, "'To… be… erased."
