Essence Extraction

While being sent away to give up her life in order to save her country from Virtus, Natalie Pier must form an alliance with Derin Moreno, which will mean forgetting their past. While running from the government Natalie and Derin find that forgetting their past may be easier than they thought.

4. Journey

When I open my eyes again I'm staring at a wood ceiling. I sit up and look around. I am in a small room about half the size of a bedroom. All that's in the room is a mattress, a toilet, and a sink. I am sitting beside the mattress. I put my hand to my head, there's a bandage covering it, the bandage is pretty big so I'm guessing the cut is to. I feel light headed sitting so I roll on the mattress and lay down. I finally feel myself start drifting to sleep when I hear yelling outside the door. I listen.

"You freakin kids! You cant fight us so why do your stupid brains keep telling you that you can!" I hear a grunt and my cell door opens. A young man is thrown in and the cell door is slammed shut. I look at the man and he looks at me. I look away quickly. No that cannot be Derin Moreno. I tell myself that, but I know its him. His brown hair, blue eyes, and his long skinny nose.

"We really got ourselves in deep this time," he laughs. I don't reply. I want nothing to do with him. "Are you just gonna ignore me?"

"Actually yes I'm going to do just that," I smirk.

"So you're just ready to die then. Are you just gonna give up? You know I always thought you were the type of person who didn't just give up. You need my help you cannot-"

"Shut up! I am not giving up and I most certainly do not need YOUR help! And you know I always thought you were the type of person I could trust, but I guess I was wrong," I declared.

"Natalie I didn't know okay. I'm sorry. You think I wanted to hurt you and your family? You were my best friend. I can't believe you think so low of me," he spit.

"What am i supposed to think when I tell you a secret and the first thing you do is run off and tell your dad."

"I thought he could help. Maybe stop the government from sending over more and more teens. I didn't know he supported it," he whispers.

I'm about to reply, but 2 guards come in the cell breaking up our conversation. "Get up you 2. We're here. Now if either of you try and escape or fight me I will make sure that your deaths are slow and painful," the front man says with a sly smile.

Derin offers me his hand, but I don't take it and he lets it fall, looking slightly embarrassed. I push myself up and follow the guards. We walk down a series of hallways too complex for me to remember. As we pass a window I see that we are surrounded by water on 3 sides, so we must be on a boat. I then remember that Virtus is across the sea, of course we would take a boat. We reach 2 big, double doors and step out onto a beach. The light is very bright. I squint my eyes and look around. The beach is deserted, but about a mile away I see a tall building. It is made entirely of glass that reflects images like mirrors and is as tall as a skyscraper. We did not have fancy buildings like this in Acerbus. I look at it for a moment in awe and look at Derin. His face shows the awe that I am feeling.

"This is the farthest journey I've ever been on."

"Yeah," Derin says with a sigh.
