The Whore, the Knights & the Librarian

Marie Haine is thirteen summers and the youngest daugther of the Duke and Duchess of Pretonia. She is newly betrothed to the King of The Moonlight Isles and will be his 9th wife. Rumours are that King Francis XVIII has killed and devoured Marie's predecessors but her parents insist that she must go through with the marriage. They have gone so far as to lock her in her room - guarded day and night - because the last time they tried to wed off a daugther, she fled and vanished. Now Marie's three brothers Nikolaii, Cesare and Peter travel to her missing sister - who is now Captain of one of the most infamous pirate ship in The Five Seas - to get her help and free Marie from her nearly sealed destiny. NB! I am writing this for ma'self, and there currently isn't anyone else who reads this so as the lazy person I am I haven't editted any of it. Should there at some point be someone out there who actually reads this and actually cares about whether it's editted... then please do tell me!

4. The Flying Fish

Nikolaii's POV

"I am sorry, Juliett. I wouldn't leave if it wasn't important" I looked at the girl sitting in the chair opposite me. She looked so fragile, so scared, like she hadn't change at all since the night of our wedding.

"I know. I appoligize" she looked down at her lap, I put my hand on her knee but removed it again when she flinched.

"Don't appoligize. I am the one who should be sorry not you" I smiled reassuringly at her. She was so innocent, my wife. So young. Thirteen summers and already two month pregnant. I was nineteen, "I'll make sure I'm home in time for the baby", she cringed at the mentioning, "Juliett. You shouldn't be affraid. You'll have the support of both your own mother and mine, you'll be attended by the best midwives and doctors. I'll be there waiting for you when it's all over"

"Yes. I know. Sorry. I'm just... nervous, that's all. Thank you for your concern" she took a sneakpeak to see my reaction, affraid that I might go angry and beat her like she was used to from home.

"I am your husband. Your wellbeing concerns me. Now, I must go and pack. Take care, okay." I leaned in and kissed her on the forehead this time she controlled herself and accepted it without balking away. I sighed and left.

"How was she, dear? Still affraid?" I nodded slightly, "oh, that poor creature. I'm sure she'll change once the baby is born. Motherhood transforms a woman, you know. I'm sorry, I don't expect you to understand. No offense" the matron smirked graciously.

"Non taken" I returned her expression and left her standing there. I had things to do.

Once back in my room I immediately starting packing - I was a practical man and did not often dwell on emotions. Still it was a wonder to me that I was actually going to willingly seek out Dash after last time no matter the cause.

...flashback...

The sun shone bright as I made my way towards the tavern. I was tired after the long travel but non-the-less excited about the prospect of seeing my sister. I might not approve of her choices but she was still my sister. We were meeting in this place called Bertha's. I had no idea where it was so I decided to ask someone.

"Excuse" I diligently asked one of the men watching two roosters fight.

He looked at me a firm frown upon his face, "eh? What' ye wan'?"

"I only wish to inquire the location of a place named 'Bertha's?"

"Why on Earth do ye have to shou' so posh 'n fancy? I don't understan' a word ye're sayin'." the man grumbled unimpressed.

"I just want to know where I can find Bertha's"

"Oh! Why didn't ye just say so? Below that way n' to th' right, can't miss it" he said and pointed.

"Thank you, kind sir."

"No problem, Bucko" he looked at me odd one last time before turning his attention back to the fighting roosters.

I inhaled and walked where he'd pointed. As he'd said it was rather easy to find. The tavern was a two-story building with a broad balcony, a full porch and an exterior of sandcoloured stone. The windows and doors were slightly arched and painted with a light blue. The door was open wide and the noise from inside filled the entire street. Hesitating a moment I walked in.

The tavern was filled to the brim with drunk men and scantily clad ladies. Laughter and music drowned my thoughts so I a moment forgot my purpose. Bewildered I looked around when I saw her. Captain Anne "Dash" Haine was wearing a loose mens shirt showing most of her clevage, tight dark brown skin pants and big leather boots. Her light blonde hair was short and shaggy falling plainly onto her more or less bare shoulders. She was wearing a bloodred - and blood stained - browband and her eyes were surrounded by thick lines of black eyeliner. I could barely recognize her as my own sister as she was sitting on the lap of a tall, skinny man with hair like her own only black and burning blue eyes. His hands were on her hips and his mouth much too close to hers. I felt an anger rise inside me, how dared he act so loosely around my virgin sister. Without thinking I found myself striding madly towards the apparently loving couple.

I ignored my sister's, "Olaii?" and as soon as I was within reach I grabbed the man and wrenched him away from my sister a look of shock and confusing upon his face and Anne looking like she was ready to slap me. My voice thundered with a newfound confidence, "How dare you-" I was stopped halfway through the sentence by two furry creatures who threw me to the ground. I felt them scratch and bite their way through my tailored clothes.

"Gabe, Cassie, here." I heard my twin say. I felt the weight lighten but not completely, one of the creatures - monkeys I now realized - still sat on my chest glaring. "Gabriel" she repeated and the monkey removed itself reluctantly and crawled up her body settling on her shoulder, the other one already sitting on her head.

"How dare he what?" she said a frown dominating her otherwise sleak features.

I scowled at the blue-eyed man, "how dare he act in such a way" I answered growling.

"In what way? As far as I'm concerned his behavior was neither offensive or threatening. He did me no harm"

"He was harming your virtue" I said with conviction.

"My virtue" she laughed sardonically, "he was harming my virtue? Do you even hear what you're saying? I don't have no virtue, brother" she put a sarcastic pressure on the last word, "I fled into exile to escape from a marriage any woman would feel blessed about, a marriage with the king, the most powerfull man in the lands. I sailed here and became a pirate, and not just any pirate - no - captain on the Savage one of the most infamous ships in existence. I ate, slept and live side by side with the worst of scum, men and women who whore, thieve and murder their way through this miserable thing called life. And you come here thinking I even have a virtue to protect? No girl who value their virginity more than they value themselves would ever survive here. They'd get raped, enslaved and murdered. I control my own life and fucking feels good. It's a god-given gift and not using it is a sin. You honestly expect me to wait living, if you can even call that life, until my sick snob parents find the biggest and richest man who'll have me and then force me to marry him. The entire thougth that women are objects to be bought and sold is outrageous. A women is worth twenty of most men. I am a thinking and speaking creature and I won't allow any man to force himself upon me... Never... and certainly not mere hours after meeting him! Any man who tells me otherwise I'll kill, so I don't need your protection, brother" she spat on me, "I can handle myself, thank you very much"

I was angry, even though I knew she was right, "I expected more of you, sister. Any proper lady would wait until marriage, and any sister of mine-"

"Am I not your sister then? Is that how we're playing this little game? Well, then I do not think we have further things to discuss. I bid you to leave"

I hesistated and she raised her voice onto one of great authority, "leave."

A heavily pierced man grabbed my collar, I struggled so he knocked me out. When I woke up I was lying in a bed on a ship heading back to Pretonia... and that was the last I saw of Dash.

...flashforward...

I sighed heavily at the memories again highly doubting my decsion of leaving. It had been arranged for the proud ship named Flying Fish to wait for us. It was a humble transportship - not a ship where you'd expect to find the three sons of the Lord of Pretonia, which was to our advantage.

I only packed the most important. Clothes, this time making sure that all of it could handle a bit of beating. Maps. Compas. Feathers and ink. A few books I deemed useful. And last but not least the gun my father had given me as a wedding present. My father had always been rather fond of violence and weapons a trait I "sadly" did not inherit.

As promised the Flying Fish was waiting for us in the port - laying heavy with goods.

"Are you ready?" Speedy asked excited. Cesare and I sighed simultaneously, but for completely opposite reasons. I had my doubts concerning Dash and whether she'd stab me to death at first chance. Cesare on the other hand simply didn't understand the necessity of this "mission". He didn't understand why we all thought of Marie's marriage to the king as a bad king. He never had been the biggest thinker.

Standing at the stern watching the moon set was quite peaceful. I felt my heart sink as the city of Alcátay became smaller and smaller in the horizon before finally disappearing.
