7. Am I Even Here?

Tryouts finished 2 hours ago, and yet here I sit. All alone, in the middle of a parking lot, because someone forgot to pick me up.

"Cause we got that fire, fire, fire. Yeah we got that fire, fire, fire. And we're gonna let it burn, burn, burn, burn. We're gonna let it bu-" I pick up my cellphone, and see a text from my dad.

Text sent to: You

Text from: Dad

Hey, honey. Sorry I forgot to pick you up. I had a mandatory meeting at work today. I'm not going to be home until tomorrow evening.

I shove my phone into my back pocket, and sling my backpack of my shoulder onto the ground.

'Why do things like this always happen to me?' I sigh in frustration as I wrestle my soccer ball out of my backpack.

'First, my mother forgets about me. Now my father too!' I throw the ball down angrily, and kick it really hard... Right into someone's car.

"Ugh!!!" I throw myself onto the ground in exasperation.

"Are you ok?" I look up into the sun. Ms. Nelson smiles down at me.

"Yeah... Sorry about your car." I pull myself off the cold asphalt and apologize.

"That's okay, it's not even my car. It belongs to the Dean." She laughs and heads toward a blue traverse. "This is mine."

"You need a ride?" She gestures at the passenger door. "It looks like it's going to rain."

"No, thank you... I can walk." I wave over my shoulder to Ms. Nelson.

"If you say so." She shrugs, and hops into her car.

I don't know why I'm still running. I won't get any drier.

The rain stings my face, so I pull my hood over my head and lean over.

"Get in the car now." A pink Volkswagen pulls up next to me.

"Huh?" I squint up from under the my saggy hood.

"I said get in." Alexis leans over the passenger seat and opens the door.

I don't hesitate, and immediately jump into the warm car.

"Oh my gosh Anna! What are you thinking? You can get pneumonia out there! Where were you? You didn't come to Emily's house after school? Anna?! Are you okay?"

Alexis bombards me with her questions, as I frantically try to answer them between her breaths of air.

"I don't have pneumonia. I was at school. I was stuck there. And yes, I am okay." I answer, finally.

"You don't know that you don't have pneumonia!" Alexis states defiantly.

"Hahaha..... AAACCHOOO!!" I sneeze, as if proving her point.

"See?" She nods at me pointedly.

"Whatever. I'm just cold." I shiver in response.

"Don't worry. I'll take you back to my place so you can dry off." She says. "Emily and Brandon are spending the night."

"Brandon? Why?" I ask in confusion.

"Boys can have sleepovers too!" She explains.

"Oh yeah... Logan." I trail off, thinking about her godlike brother. 'What was it, that made this boy so different?'

"You okay?" Alexis waves a hand in front of my face. "You kind of zoned out on me." She laughs.

"I'm good." I reply, and recover.

"Good." She gives me a strange look.
