4. Four

I open my eyes to see the menu of Insidious 2 playing. I look to my left to see Gemma with her back to me on the couch. Then to my right to see Sam on her stomach with her head under the pillow. I laugh and tuck her hand under the blanket.  I sit up only to realize my bum is asleep. I stand up and stretch, making a weird noise.

I sit on the couch and turn the telly to Netflix. I go through the movies and hit Class of 99’. I check my phone and notice its only 11:30. Holy shit, we started watching movies around 3 in the afternoon and we fell asleep early. I rub the sleep from my eyes and turn the volume up.

The monitor starts making weird noises and Penelope’s cries fall through the speaker. I jog to my room to see her on her stomach, freaking out.

“Oh baby.” I sit on the bed and she turns her head to me with her little lip trembling.

“Aw Penelope.” I pick her up and hold her against my chest. I kiss her little head and rub small circles on her back.

“It’s alright honey. Daddy’s here.”

Sam’s POV

“It’s alright honey. Daddy’s here.” I smile as I listen to Harry talk to the baby.

He’s so sweet. It’s upsetting what Des said to him. I think it could’ve gone better, but I don’t know. I’ve never met him, but after what I heard from Gem, he isn’t very nice.

“Alright let’s change you.” I smile bigger when a little giggle is made.

“Sam.” I open my eyes to see Gemma grabbing Harry’s blanket.

“Let’s go to the guest room.” I gather the other big blanket and the pillows from the room.

I follow her into the extra room with confusion written on my face.

“I thought this was a two bedroom.” She fixes up the bed and looks at me with sleepy eyes.

“It is.” She yawns before speaking again, “Penelope has a play pen, but Harry likes it when she sleeps with him.” I follow her to Harry’s room to give back the blanket.

“Here.” She puts the blanket on the bed and kisses Penelope.

“Auntie loves you Nel. Goodnight.” She hugs Harry and leaves the room. I walk up beside Harry and she looks at me.

“She has green eyes.” Harry looks at me and then her with a big smile.

“Yeah, she has my eyes. And nose, and colour, and hair, and dimples.” I laugh and she giggles.

“Well, I’m heading to bed, so goodnight.” I hug him from his side and he hugs me back. We stay together for a moment, before we both realize we should go.

“Okay, um, night Harry. Goodnight little baby. See you in the morning.”

Next Morning

I wake up to the smell of breakfast. I open my eyes a little bit and notice Gemma still asleep. I look at the clock next to her and groan when it says 7:30. Shit! I have to go into work today. I get up and text my boss, who is my older sister, to let her know that I’ll be a little late. I quickly dress into some good jeans, a blue tank top, and a green jacket over it. I put my green leopard print socks on and grab my bag.

I tie my hair up and quietly leave the room. I turn the corner to only be welcomed by a half-naked Harry. I watch as his muscles flex as he moves around the food. I can’t help, but let my eyes trail down to his bum. It looks so fit and oh my god! This is my friend’s brother!

I open my mouth to speak when he starts to sing.

I've been waiting on the sunset

Bills on my mindset

I can't deny they're getting high

Higher than my income

Incomes bread crumbs

I've been trying to survive

The glow that the sun gets

Right around sunset

Helps me realize

This is just a journey

Drop your worries

You are gonna turn out fine.

Oh, you turn out fine.

Fine, oh, you turn out fine.

But you gotta keep your head up, oh,

And you can let your hair down, eh.

You gotta keep your head up, oh,

And you can let your hair down, eh.

I know it's hard, know it's hard,

To remember sometimes,

But you gotta keep your head up, oh,

And you can let your hair down, eh.

I've got my hands in my pockets,

Kicking these rocks.

It's kinda hard to watch this life go by.

I'm buying into skeptics,

Skeptics mess with, the confidence in my eyes

I'm seeing all the angles, starts to get tangled

I start to compromise

My life and the purpose.

Is it all worth it?

Am I gonna turn out fine?

Oh, you'll turn out fine.

Fine, oh, you'll turn out fine.

But you gotta keep your head up, oh,

And you can let your hair down, eh.

You gotta keep your head up, oh,

And you can let your hair down, eh.

I know it's hard, know it's hard,

To remember sometimes,

But you gotta keep your head up, oh,

And you can let your hair down, eh.

Only rainbows after rain

The sun will always come again.

It's a circle, circling,

Around again, it comes around again.

I said,

Only rainbows after rain

The sun will always come again.

It's a circle, circling,

Around again, it comes around,

But you gotta keep your head up, oh,

And you can let your hair down, eh.

You gotta keep your head up, oh,

And you can let your hair down, eh.

I know it's hard, know it's hard

To remember sometimes,

But you gotta keep your head up, oh,

And you can let your hair down, eh.

Keep your head up, oh,

And you can let your hair down, eh.

Keep your head up, oh,

And you can let your hair down, eh.

“That’s cute.”

Harry’s POV

“That’s cute.” I turn around and laugh when I see Sam.

“It’s what I do best.” I reply as I flip the bacon. I listen, hearing nothing. I turn midway and watch as Sam searches for her shoes.

“Check behind the couch.” She walks over to the couch and looks behind it.

“Ah, thank you.” She says quietly. I grab a 3 plates and place bacon, waffles, and eggs on each. I turn the stove off and place the plates on the counter.

“Grab one, if you’d like.” I chop up my eggs into tiny pieces before placing them in a Monster Inc. bowl for Penelope.

“She’s beautiful.” I look up and Sam’s looking at the picture of Penelope.

“She is.”

“Where’s her mother?”  I stop chopping the eggs and slowly look up at her.

“I don’t know.” I say softly before turning around. Sam must’ve realized how uncomfortable I was because she said, “Forget it. I’m sorry; I shouldn’t have brought it up.” When I don’t speak, she continues.

“Well, thanks for the breakfast. I can’t stay because I’m meeting up with my boss this morning, so I must go. But, thank you for letting me stay.” She walks around the counter and hesitantly reaches up to peck me on the cheek.

“Goodbye.” I watch as she leaves the apartment and Gemma walks out with freaky hair.

She yawns and says, “Where’s Sam?” I hand her her plate and answer, “You just missed her. She had to go meet with her boss.” She nods and begins to stuff her face.

“What’s the plan then?” I take my plate to the table and sit myself down.

“I don’t know. Go visit Mum and hang out with the lads for a while then to the pub.” She gives me the ‘Are you serious?’ look and I laugh.

“Not the pub, but visit Mum and the lads. Maybe I’ll call Kayla, Lisa, and Charlie to see if they want to do anything with us.”

“Well, I’m up for anything. We just need to be careful. People only know us and if they see Penelope, who knows what will happen.” She’s right.

If anyone saw Penelope, they could assume she’s mine or even Gemma’s. I can’t take the chance of my half siblings being asked millions of questions about a baby they don’t even know. Especially Charlie. He could be mistaken for the dad, I could be, and Gemma could be. Anything is possible and that’s what scares me. I want Penelope to be older to understand why I do what I do; which is to protect her.
