59. When Giant met Mouse

It was a cold summer’s day

Without a cloud in the sky.

The wind did not whistle

Not even a twig did stir

On the day that

Giant met Mouse.

Mouse skittered along

Hidden in the green green grass,

Camouflaged from danger

And from the bright shining sun

On the day that

Giant met Mouse.

Having met with a friend

Mouse headed home

For a relaxing evening

Reading a book or a poem

On the day that

Giant met Mouse.

Before reaching home

Mouse saw another friend;

About to call out

A huge shape loomed above

On the day that

Giant met Mouse.

The shape grew bigger

Cast a shadow

Of the deepest grey

Upon minute little Mouse

On the day that

Giant met Mouse.

"Stop right there

I need to talk

And you will certainly do." the creature,

Or was it a monster, said

On the day that

Giant met Mouse.

Mouse stuttered and spluttered

Unsure of how to reply

When the monstrous creature

Reached to the ground

On the day that

Giant met Mouse.

Mouse rose from the ground,

It seemed he were now on a cliff,

And that cliff began to rumble and shake

As the monster moved away

On the day that

Giant met Mouse.

"Who are you?"

Mouse managed to utter.

“I am Giant, the Giant

Of Calcutta." Giant replied

On the day that

Giant met Mouse.

Like a tree trapped in a storm

The movements thrashed little Mouse about

And by the time they arrived

Mouse was much beaten and bruised

On the day that

Giant met Mouse.

Mouse looked around

Absorbing delicacies that met the eye

But Giant frowned, muttering

"Too quickly. It goes too quickly."

On the day that

Giant met Mouse.

"You wanted to talk" Mouse squeaked

Two and twenty hours later.

"So I did but, oh, it will go

Too quickly." Giant moaned

On the day that

Giant met Mouse.

"I have been deceived

And tricked, by who

I do not know."

Giant rampaged

On the day that

Giant met Mouse.

Hours of ranting

And pacing the floor

Did follow this outburst

From Giant to Mouse

On the day that

Giant met Mouse.

When Mouse realised

What Giant meant, and

Was planning to do

Away from the room he hopped

On the day that

Giant met Mouse.

"I knew it

It is as I feared.

He was too quick

And has now disappeared." Giant cried

On the day that

Giant met Mouse.

But too soon losing hope

Was Giant's failing

When Mouse returned

With the lost treasure

On the day that

Giant met Mouse.

"Saviour, my hero"

Giant praised.

"Do stay here

Don't be dazed" offered Giant

On the day that

Giant met Mouse.

"Not too hasty

Please my friend."

Were the words of Mouse,

Still fearing the end

On the day that

Giant met Mouse.

After much time,

Much pestering from Giant and

Much thought and debate

Mouse made his decision

On the day that

Giant met Mouse.

Happy are they,

Living together

Under the sun

The moon and the stars since

The day that

Giant met Mouse.

Four and thirty years later

On a warm bright summers day

They are still up there,

Talking continuously since

The day that

Giant met Mouse.
