"How can I help you?" Gemma asked with an awkward voice. She was looking at me with a strange expression on her face; a mix of astonishment and disgust. And I could understand why. I would do the same if I were her.
"Well... I'm here because your brother..." but her sighing made me stop speaking.
"Oh dear..." I heard her murmured to herself. She rolled her eyes and kept staring at me.
Oh no! She must think I'm a fan of her brother's band!
"I'm not here because he's famous! I promise!" I exclaimed suddenly and she seemed to be slightly taken aback as I almost yelled.
"He is the one who asked me to come here!" I said quickly but she didn't move.
"He asked you to come here?" she repeated slowly, not looking convinced at all. I simply nodded.
"And you are?"
She crossed her arms on her chest and told me, "I've never heard of you before. Are you a friend of Harry?"
"Well... I think we can say so, yeah," I replied awkwardly. I wasn't going to tell her I was involved in a plot intending to kill her brother, was I?
"You're not sure about it?" She raised an eyebrow.
It was not going well at all.
"Listen, I'm here because Harry needs your help!" I changed subject. "He asked me to come to find you because you are his last chance!"
"His last chance? But I don't understand anything you're saying!" She shook her head, looking annoyed.
"Do you remember what happened to two of his mates two years ago?" She nodded. "Well, the same thing happened to your brother a few days ago!"
"You mean Harry has been kidnapped?"
A silence followed her sentence. She seemed to be thinking and I didn't know what else to add right now.
"Scarlett... You seem to be a nice girl but don't you realize what you're saying is something serious? Lying about that kind of stuff is not funny."
This was the reaction I have been dreading. She thought I was a liar.
"But that's the truth! You can go at his house! He won't be there!"
"He could simply be gone because of his job. He is a busy man."
"But he is not gone because of his job! He has been kidnapped and now is kept in a cave!" I felt anger starting to grow in me. What was I supposed to do to make her believe me?
"In a cave? What are you saying now...," she sighed.
"I know it sounds crazy but it's true! Believe me, please!"
She looked up at me and replied rather sharply.
"And what if I don't believe you?"
She couldn't ask that. She didn't realize how bad what she was saying was. Why couldn't she believe what I said like Niall did?
"How can you ask something like that? I told you your brother was captive somewhere!" I was completely beside myself.
"If you don't believe me then it will be the end for him! You are the last person that can help me to save him! But if you don't he will just die within a few days without anyone knowing what happened! And you'll feel guilty for the rest of your life because the only person who knew what would happen warned you but you didn't believe her!"
Gemma now was staring agape at me. But I didn't care. I had to find a way to convince her I wasn't a liar, no matter how.
"You know what? That's fine if you don't believe me! You can have that back, then!" I pulled off the necklace, which was under my shirt, and handed it to her.
"Keep it! It will be the only thing left from your brother! And don't come crying the day you will put the necklace back around the neck of his dead body!" She looked more and more shocked after each and every of my words. Yes, they were hard to hear but even harder to pronounce. Tears had started to roll down my cheeks as I spoke those hurtful words I dreaded would soon come true.
"I guess I'll just have to find a way to save him on my own. Goodbye Gemma," I said sharply before starting to walk away, leaving her with Harry's necklace on her threshold.
A few seconds later, I heard the sound of a phone ringing and a door closing.
I hadn't been able to convince her. She didn't believe me. What was I supposed to do now? I had no idea who could help me nor where I could go.
Maybe the four of us just were meant to die like that. But I didn't want to believe it was the only possible ending. There must be a way to save at least the three men.
An unstoppable flow of tears was running down my face. I just felt useless and powerless. Liam, Louis and Paul already had won.
"Scarlett! Wait!" I stopped dead and turned around to see Gemma running toward me. She still was holding the necklace in her hand.
As she reached my side, she spoke quickly,
"I'm sorry, Scarlett. I do believe you now."
