I walked down the stairs, yawning loudly, after having not slept for the whole night. When we had come back to their house, Louis had led Harry somewhere in the house but I didn’t know where. Probably in the same room I had been in a few days ago... But I hadn’t seen him come back afterwards. Anxiety had started to grow in me as the hours had gone by and I hadn’t been able to fall asleep; feeling way too guilty as well. I should have warned him before! Why did I play that stupid character? I shouldn’t have cared about what would happen to me!
But on the other side, I couldn’t dare to stop them. Those two men were frightening me in a way I would never have imagined it could be possible. Louis’ words kept repeating in my mind every time they asked me to do something for their plans. It couldn’t keep on being that way... I had to find a way to save Harry, at least... But I doubted anything would work.
I entered the kitchen but found it empty, although I would have expected both Liam and Louis to be there. I didn’t care either; I was better alone. I looked for something to eat in the cupboards and sat down to have my breakfast. I thought I would eat peacefully but it would have been too good to be true. I heard Louis yelling in the living but to my surprise, it wasn’t Liam who replied. Curious, I got up with my bowl in my hands and went into the living room to know what was going on.
Louis was leaned against a wall, listening to the impressive man I already had seen a while ago. What was his name already? Paul, I guessed. Meanwhile, Liam was sitting on the couch and seemed rather annoyed by their conversation. But I couldn’t find out what it was about as they stopped talking right when they saw me. Liam stood up quickly and they stared at me.
After a long and awkward silence, Paul walked toward me, taken me aback. What did he want? I didn’t do anything wrong, did I? I swallowed hardly and glanced toward Liam, wondering what would happen next. I saw him shrugging his shoulders before I looked back at Paul, who, at my surprise, was smiling.
“I’m very impressed,” he spoke in a calm voice. I raised an eyebrow but didn’t ask why.
“I gave you one month but you got him on the first date!” he exclaimed, laughing.
I stared agape at him. “You gave me one month? Hang on... You were that guy on the phone!” So Liam and Louis were working for him? But I still didn’t get why they wanted to get rid of the three other members. Did that guy know them? I was sure I already had heard of him before and he must have been related to the band in any way. I just didn’t remember.
“I’m glad to have you in my team then!” He held his hand out but I didn’t shake it. Instead, I kept on eating the content of my bowl. Being rude didn’t matter.
“Scarlett,” Louis growled but I ignored him.
“I want to know what will happen to Harry. Where is he? And what did you do to him?” I asked him sharply. He didn’t seem annoyed by my behaviour at all as he kept on smiling.
He then turned around and spoke to the two others as if he hadn’t heard me. “So who’s next?” he sounded more serious. Louis and Liam looked at each other and replied in unison,
“Niall is our next target.” Paul nodded.
“It’s gonna be harder to get Niall... I give you more time.” He made a short pause. “Let’s say... You have a month and a half.”
And he walked out of the room, making the front slam loudly a few seconds later.
“Who’s Niall?” I muttered. I saw Louis stepping closer toward me and he seemed to be boiling with anger.
“Who do you think you are?” he shouted at me but Liam held him back. “Get off me, Liam!” But the latter ignored him. He spoke to me instead, “Niall is the blonde guy from our band. Now that we got Harry, thanks to you,” he insisted on the last part while giving a warning look to Louis,
“Niall is the second one on our list. You will have to do the exact same thing.”
Louis snorted. “She won’t be able to get Niall. He is not like Harry.”
“It will start tomorrow. You better be ready,” Liam carried on as if Louis hadn’t talked.
I shook my head, though I perfectly knew I would have no choice. It would be like before. Either him or me. But I couldn’t let it happen again...
“I need some fresh air,” I changed the subject suddenly and the two of them looked at me agape.
“I don’t want to stay here the whole day! Please, let me go and walk out there for a short while!” I begged them. Louis laughed but Liam didn’t move.
“You really..” Louis started but Liam cut him off, “Okay. You have two hours.”
“Liam! You’re mad or what?” the other one shouted angrily but Liam didn’t look at him.
“You can go and wander for two hours. But we’ll always know where you are. Remember you can’t escape.” Louis nodded, though still looking angrily at Liam. He added, “But you won’t do everything you want to. You shall be watched.”
I smiled weakly and walked away. I went to put my bowl in the sink before going up to my room. I opened the closet and put on the first clothes I found. Then, I rushed downstairs to the entrance hall where Liam and Louis were waiting for me, both of them with their hands crossed on their chests.
Louis handed me a phone, wearing a smirk on his face.
“Have fun,” he whispered. I smiled widely and walked out of the house without talking.
I felt better straight away as I looked around me, feeling the cold wind against my skin. I shivered slightly but began walking away. Nevertheless, I couldn’t help but think about what they had told me earlier. How could they know where I would go? Would they send someone to spy on me? No, that was completely crazy, I thought. But I looked around me though I saw nothing suspect. I just was being paranoiac.
I sighed. It was great to be outside on my own but it didn’t mean I was free. And now that I was thinking about it, why did they let me go out? I couldn’t do anything without them knowing. I could just wander around the streets and that was all. I froze as a thought came to my mind.
Maybe they wanted me to stay away so they could be with Harry without having to take of me? Oh no! What would happen to him? What have I done? I shouldn’t have gone away!
I closed my eyes, trying to calm myself down. Harry must still be alive. He must be somewhere in the house. But where exactly, I didn’t know. I had to find out. I hoped they wouldn’t do anything to him while I was away.
I opened my eyes, hearing footsteps getting closer toward me.
