"So where are we going?" Niall asked me as we stepped into his car. He started it and waited for an answer.
"Let's head to the north! We have to go as far as possible. No matter where precisely." He nodded and started to drive away. I looked out through the window, dreading to see their car waiting outside the house. But to my relief the street was empty. They had gone back home. I knew it wouldn't take them long to notice there was something wrong but knowing there weren't here made me realise we still would have advance on them. But how long would it last was the question.
"Niall stop here!" I shouted so suddenly that Niall jumped, trying to stop as soon as possible.
"What?" he asked surprised.
I opened the window and threw my purse out of the car, as far as I could without caring about the few pedestrians who were watching the car and my action.
"It's alright! You can drive!" I exclaimed and he did so without asking any questions.
It took about thirty minutes before we were out of the city. The farther we drove, the better I felt. It's like I was free again. Both relief and fear had started to grow in me. There was a tiny chance for me to survive. But the chances they caught me were bigger. Louis' words still were haunting me. Was there really a way for them to always know where I was? If there was, it would just be a matter of time before I get caught.
Niall's hand squeezing my shoulders got me out of my thoughts. I turned my head toward him to see a shy and comforting smile on his face. The car was stopped at traffic lights and as it turned green, Niall spoke while starting to drive, "I can't promise you it will be alright till the end of your life or at least till that whole thing is over, but I can promise you I'll try to do my best to help you. You won't get caught."
"Thank you, Niall. I owe so much. You help me without knowing anything about me when all I did was trapping your friend." I couldn't stop the tears from falling down my face.
"I owe you explanations." I saw him nodded and I carried on, watching the road in front of me.
"I shouldn't have been here at first. I am a victim like you and Harry. I was a witness and now I am an accomplice. I don't have the choice..."
I took a deep breath, waiting for any reactions from Niall but he stayed silent.
"I'm sorry I can't tell you who are the guys looking for you. I'd like to tell you but..." I stopped wondering whether I should tell him. After all he had the right to know.
"But?" he repeated.
"You don't deserve to know. It wouldn't be good for you. But you'll know soon enough, I assume. They will find us one day or another." Those words hurt but it would be hard to convince myself it wasn't true. I knew there only a few days left for me.
"Why? Haven't I the right to know who has something against me."
I looked into his now angry eyes and felt bad for him. Did he really want to know his old mates wanted him dead?
"All I know is that as long as Zayn still is free, you won't be hurt. They didn't want to hurt Harry before the three of you were reunited," I changed subject, trying to reassure him -and myself at the same time-.
"Then it means that the guys who want to have the three of us must be those who kidnapped Liam and Louis!" he exclaimed and I could hear a little hope in his voice. He probably hoped he would be able to avenge his friends. If only he knew...
"Scarlett," he called me. "Don't you think that your family and friends are starting to worry as you disappeared?" I stared at him for a long while before replying,
"I don't think so. I'm only child so I don't have any siblings who would care about me. And my parents currently are living in the United States. They move a lot because they don't like staying too long in the same place. They like changes." I sighed, "and they don't really know how Internet work so I can't Skype with them though I tried to explain them many times. As for my friends, I moved away many times so I don't have very close ones. I met my closest friend a few days ago and one of the guys was with me so he pretended to be my boyfriend so that wouldn't seem too suspicious."
"I'm sorry, Scarlett. You don't deserve all this." I smiled weakly at him, mumbling a quick thank you.
"I should be sorry for you. I wished none of this happened, whether I'm involved or not. You don't deserve to end that way."
He smiled too and a long silence followed as he kept on driving for hours.
"It's getting late. We should stop somewhere," Niall muttered as I was about to doze off. I nodded yawning and he parked the car in a small town, right next to a small hotel.
"We'll stay for the night and then, we'll keep on driving tomorrow." We stepped out of the car and walked into the building. Niall asked for a room while I tried not to fall asleep. I felt worse knowing he would spend money just to save someone like me. I owed him so much.
A while later, we finally were in a small room where there were two single beds.
"Go to sleep. I'll stay awake for a little while. Just to check out if there ain't any suspect cars which followed us." I thanked him and told him to wake me up in a few hours so that we would exchange roles. I heard him wishing me goodbye before quickly falling asleep.
"Scarlett! You can wake up," Niall's voice whispered in my ear after what seemed to be a only a few minutes later. I sat up, yawning, and noticed he looked tired, seeming to fight back tiredness.
"Get some sleep, Niall!" I exclaimed, suddenly utterly awake. "I will never thank you enough." He smiled and went to lie on the other bed before dozing off at once. He started to snore quietly and I stared at him, smiling, for a short time before going toward the window to watch the road.
I fixed the street during long minutes before a car appeared. But it wasn't just a car. It was their car. I recognised it car straight away.
I rushed toward Niall and shook him to wake him up.
"Niall! Wake up!! Quick!" I shouted. How did they find us? How? I started to cry without being able to control my tears.
"Niall!" I repeated his name.
Panic filled me in more and more and fear overran me even faster. He looked up at me, blinking.
"Niall." My whole body was shaking with despair.
