Shadows *complete*

They were five. They were at the top. Until that day, two years ago. Five became three.
They never understood what had truly happened. Until that day, two years too late.
« I'm afraid it's time to say Goodbye. »

14. Be selfish

"Scarlett!" A voice called me, waking me up but I didn't open my eyes.

"Scarlett! Wake up!" the voice repeated and I tried to tell him to go away but it mustn't have been very clear. I heard sighing and two cold hands grabbed my arms before I felt myself being pulled off the bed. I hit the floor though still under the blanket, while the voice kept calling me.
I opened my eyes and met Louis' blue ones.

"For God's sake get up!" he spat with an annoyed voice. I tried my best not to yell at him while sitting up, yawning.

"Why did you wake me up? There's nothing wrong in sleeping!" He simply shrugged his shoulders and began walking out of the room. He stopped in the door frame and replied, still staring ahead of him, "meet us in the kitchen in five minutes. We have to talk." And he went away.

I stayed on the floor listening to the sound of his steps fading away while starting to stress about what he had just said. They needed to talk to me? Why? About what? I grabbed the blanket and tightened it in my hand, my knuckles becoming white as anxiety started to grow in me.

There was no way they could have discovered about the letter. Unless if Niall had freaked out.
I slowly stood up and walked to the kitchen, wondering if it would be the last time I'd walk in my life. I didn't want to know what was going to happen in the room I was heading to. But I couldn't be late either or I knew Louis would get mad. It seemed anger was the only feeling that could grow in that man.

"Here you are!" Liam exclaimed when I entered the kitchen but his voice didn't sound angry. He seemed rather happy. Surprised by the tone of his voice, I stopped dead and just stared at the two of them.

"You can sit down, you know," Louis snapped though in a calmer voice than usual. I walked past them and sat beside the table while Liam handed me a glass, asking me what I wanted for breakfast. Taken aback I didn't answer but he started to cook eggs and bacon.

"Is there something wrong?" I dared to ask, still not understanding why they were behaving that way. What was wrong with them?

They both giggled before Liam answered, "nothing is wrong!" I raised an eyebrow and Louis carried on after him, "on the contrary, everything is fine! It's even more than fine!" I had never heard him sound that thrilled. To be honest, seeing them happy gave me goose bumps. It wasn't a good sign.

"Although you didn't give Niall your number, he called Paul this morning to ask him if there could be a way for you two to meet again! So Paul called us and we told him that you would see Niall this afternoon." I stared agape at Liam as he just finished his sentence.

"We would never have thought he would have liked to see you again. We were ready for another plan. But he seems to like you. That's the best news ever!"

I smiled weakly, not knowing what I could say. But the two of them didn't seem to mind and Liam handed me breakfast so I just began eating.

"Do I really have to see him this afternoon? Can't it wait until tomorrow?" I tried not to sound too annoyed.

Louis shook his head. "You have to see him as much as possible or it won't work out." I sighed and didn't add anything else as I finished eating before heading back to my room to be ready for the afternoon.

I walked up the street toward Niall's house, wondering how Niall would react once he would see me. But why did he want to see me? If I had been him, I would never have called me again. I feared his reaction because of the little mic in my ear. If he starts talking about the letter or asking about Harry, I'd be dead.

I walked up toward his house after going through the portal he just had opened. I saw his figure waiting for me under the porch and put a smile on my face as I got closer.

"Good afternoon, Niall!" I exclaimed happily. He did the same though his smile was rather shy and awkward. We entered the house and went into the living room in silence before he spoke to ask me if I wanted anything to drink. I answered I just wanted water and he walked away, leaving me alone. I sat down on the couch but nearly fell on the floor as I heard a voice talking in my ear, "try to be as you were yesterday night. If it works today, there will be no need for us to use another plan." I simply nodded, even though they couldn't see me. I heard footsteps getting closer so I looked toward the door to see Niall walking in with two glasses in his hands. He sat down beside me and turned his face to look at me. I saw his mouth starting to open and, knowing what he was about to say, I put my hand on his lips. He stared at me agape while I placed a strand of hair behind my ear, revealing the small mic. Then I put my finger on my lips so he could understand that we couldn't talk. He slowly nodded and I released him.

"Let's start playing then! If you don't start now you'll never beat me!" he winked and I smiled, feeling relieved.

He stood up to look for the remote and turning the TV on. But as he came back beside me, I noticed he was also holding a block note. He handed me a remote and as the game was loading, he wrote down a few words.

He handed it to me a while later before exclaimed loudly, "I'll play first so you can see how hard it'll be for you to be better than me!" I giggled.

"You won't laugh that much once you'll lose!" He laughed and started playing while I read.

I don't know what happened to you but I can't let Harry down. You don't have to be the one to save him. I will. Save yourself first.

I looked up at him, shocked by his words. I didn't expect that at all. Why did he seem to care about me? Why did he care about someone he didn't even know? I even told him there was a plot against him. Anyone would have got scared. But not him.

I can't. I'd be hunt down till death if I try anything. And Harry needs my help. I promised him.

I put the note beside him and focused on the screen.

"You're losing!" I laughed at him and he just shrugged his shoulders before scoring. I pretend pouting while it was his turn to laugh at me.

"Your turn now!" I nodded and started to concentrate at the game but glanced for a few times at Niall who was writing under my writing. The game quickly ended and I lost.

"That's unexpected!" Niall said with sarcasm and I stuck my tongue at him.

"Poor game! He's used to me winning... what have you done to it?" He kept on laughing while handing me the block note with a smile on his face. And he started to play again.

Don't think about Harry. You should try to run away to save yourself. You shouldn't care about us. Just run away. Don't do it for me. Do it for you. You have the right to be selfish. I'll find a way to release Harry. But I'll come with you to protect you if you want.

Run away and don't look back.

I felt tears forming in my eyes. He couldn't ask me to be selfish. Why was he so kind? His mates and him were in danger and he was asking to leave them. I just couldn't, could I?
I grabbed the pen and wrote down only two sentences.

Run away with me, please. I need your help.

I handed it to him even though his game wasn't over, and held it until he took it.

He read the few words and smiled before standing up. He moved closer toward me and took the little mic off my ear before placing it slowly on the table. He leaned in and whispered in my ear,

"Let's go."
