Interlude

There's no other person Holly loves more than Eli, even though at first she wants to hate him with every fiber in her being. Her teenage heart still lives inside her, sometimes when you're so in love you need to pause and just feel.

Tonight You’re Perfect by New Politics

Tonight you're perfect
I wanna fall in love with the stars in your eyes
Tonight you're perfect
I wanna fall in love but only for the night
(Tonight you're perfect)
(Tonight you're perfect)
Only for the night
(Tonight you're perfect)
(Tonight you're perfect)
I feel perfect too!

You won't believe what I've seen, momma
There's a fire inside, there's a storm on the rise
It's in the air that we breathe, momma
Can I speak out my mind in these changing times?

Sydney

“Hey Sydney, can you go and check in on one of my patients in Room 847 before you go,” Eric said swinging by as I was about to get into the elevator.

I let out a slightly frustrated sigh and gripped my bag a little tighter.

“Of course,” I replied as I walked back down the hall way and into Room 847. I was met by a room filled with balloons in all different shades of green. A lime green balloon was tied down to a weight and a note was attached to it. I bent down to pick it up and opened the note.

I know they’re nowhere near as pretty as your eyes, but will you give me the honor of joining me to go ice skating tomorrow night at 6 pm.

-Eric

My face broke out into a goofy grin and I tucked the card into my back pocket and slid out my phone.

To Eric:

I happily accept your invitation.

From Eric:

I’m so relieved you accepted. Did you like the balloons? I hope it wasn’t too cheesy.

To Eric:

It was quite lovely, I thought it was cute. Now what am I supposed to do with so many balloons?

From Eric:

Keep them, and let everyone know I successfully asked you out.

I locked my phone and wrangled every single balloon up into my right hand, which was difficult considering there were probably over a hundred balloons in the room. I walked out of the room trying to hide behind the massive bunch of balloons clutched in my hand. I opted for the stairs terrified I would get stuck in the elevator and somehow managed to fit them all into my car. I drove slower than usual to push a couple balloons from the windshield. Once I got home I rounded them all up again and went inside.

“Why are you bringing home so many balloons? Are you having a party?” my mother asked as I let them go in the living room.

“No, it was a very adorable way of Eric asking me out,” I said handing her the note.

“Very cute, well go on upstairs so you can get some rest before tomorrow,” she said smiling kindly.

“Goodnight,” I called out to both her and my stepfather.

I showered and changed and flopped into bed with a wide smile on my face before falling asleep.

It was already five thirty and I was sitting in my bath robe and staring intently at my open drawers and closet. I knew I had to wear jeans since it was ice-skating, but no outfit I tried on seemed to look right. After a couple more minutes of deliberation I settled on dark blue jeans, a loose fitting flower patterned blouse, and a light pink cardigan. I let my hair settle into its natural waves, and applied minimal make-up.

I packed all my necessary items into a small bag and walked downstairs receiving a text from Eric saying he was here. I walked downstairs to find him in a deep conversation with my mother and stepfather.

“Hi,” I said as he turned up to look at me.

“You look lovely,” he said standing up and handing me a bouquet of sunflowers.

“You do too,” I said hiding my flushed face into the bright and cheery flowers.

He was changed out of his usual scrubs and lab coat and into a black and gray striped shirt and in dark jeans.

“Ready to go?” he asked taking my hand in his.

I nodded and we said our goodbyes to my parents and climbed into his sleek black BMW. We spent the ride to the local ice skating rink making small conversation about work. He opened the door to the car and to the ice skating rink like a gentleman. He went to get our skates and tied my laces for me.

“I’m hoping you have experience, because I definitely don’t,” I said with a nervous laugh.

“Don’t worry, I’ve gotcha,” he said taking my hand and pulling me onto the ice with ease.

I wobbled a bit at first but soon got the hang of it. There weren’t many people considering it was a Tuesday, so it was nice to enjoy the background music and him laughing like crazy at me whenever I almost fell. We spent most of the time racing or forcing him to watch me spin in little circles like I had learned how to do. I felt like a kid again, and my cheeks were flushed a healthy pink when he grabbed me from the waist and pulled me closer to him.

“Your eyes are even lovelier up close,” he said softly.

“I could say the same about yours,” I whispered, our foreheads touching, as I looked intently into his dark brown eyes with little gold flecks in them.

“I hope you don’t mind that I kiss on the first date,” he whispered before touching his lips to mine as we stopped off to the side of the rink.

My heart raced and did somersaults in my chest. The town of butterflies in my stomach erupted into flight. I wrapped my arms around his neck and he held me tighter. He pulled away and kissed my nose.

“I can’t quite seem to believe I’m here with you,” he said.

“Well you better start too,” I joked as we sat down on a bench to untie our skates.

"Have I told you that you look absolutely breathtaking?" he said as we walked to return our skates.

"Once or twice," I said laughing my cheeks flushing a light pink.

We went for a quick coffee run before he drove me home. We stopped in front of my house, and the silence in the car was filled with electricity.

“I had a great time,” I said turning to look at him.

“I did to, I hope we can do this again sometime, but not the same thing, you know like something else,” he babbled.

“I take it you’re still a little nervous,” I said giggling.

“Just a little,” he said sheepishly.

“There’s no need, because I really like you and I really liked tonight,” I confessed.

“I’m glad you do,” he said before leaning over and planting a sweet kiss on my lips. I smiled and he started to laugh against my lips. In that moment nothing was better than tasting his laughter against my smiling lips.
