5. Chapter 5

It only took a couple days to pack up what few belongings Lexi and I had, into boxes. Thanks to an advance on the first weeks' 'services', I was able to pay off the superintendent and leave the apartment in good standing, sort of. As I put the last of the boxes in my old 1985 Chev. Citation, I say a little prayer. I hope this isn't a mistake. The boys had offered to send a limo or to come pick us up in one of their cars, but I refused, choosing to drive my beat off old clunker to their house and park it somewhere out of sight, in the advent of a quick getaway. As I drive to the address they scrawled on a piece of paper, my anxiety level doubles. I've had some coffee already this morning, but clearly not enough. About 15 minutes later I find myself idling in a long driveway, obstructed by a huge black wrought iron gate. I swallow hard.

"Don't worry mom, that's to keep out fans and photographers...", Lexi says, happily, sensing my hesitation.

"And us in...", I mumble to myself, already feeling claustrophobic and trapped.

"Just push the button on that boxy thingy...", Lexi says. My heart is beating so fast and loud, I almost don't hear her. I roll my window down and push the button.

"Yes?...", a static filled voice asks.

"H-Hi. We're here. I mean, Faith and Lexi are here...", I stammer, trying to find the right words. God, could I be anymore nervous. The big gate slides open and I ease my foot on the accelerator. As soon as we're through, I watch in the rear view mirror as they close securely behind me. The driveway is long and winding, with trees bordering on either side, making a beautiful canopy of green overhead.

"Wow... Pretty...", Lexi whispers. After about 5 minutes, we finally reach the house, oh who am I kidding, it's a mansion of epic proportions. Queen Anne style building, beautifully constructed, with attractive terracotta detailing. I park and Lexi jumps eagerly out of the car.

"Lexi, I don't want you touching anything. And no running or screaming or playing or throwing," I say, panic gripping my insides.

"Don't be silly..." Liam says, as he and the others make their way out to greet us.

"Is this your car?", Zayn asks growls. I nod. "I'm surprised it got you both here in one piece..."

"It's fine..." I snap.

"We'll get rid of this and get you something safer to drive..." he snaps back.

"I don't want anything else. It's fine," I repeat.

"If you're going to be married to one of us you can't be driving around in that...death trap!"

"I'll drive whatever you want while I'm here, but you're not getting rid of my car!"

"It's a piece of junk!"

"It might be a piece of junk, but it's MY piece of junk! It stays or we go!"

"Fine, give me the keys. I'll go park it in the garage so no one has to look at it!" he finally acquiesces.

"Let us help you with your things", Harry offers, changing the subject. I open my trunk and fight the urge to shrink into a small ball and disappear as they gaze at the 2 small suitcases and 3 small boxes.

"That's all you have?", Liam asks. I nod trying not to be offended.

"The apartment was furnished...", I explain, in a small voice. They each grab something and lead us inside. I reluctantly hand Zayn my keys and he disappears back outside.

"The house has a vaulted reception hall, 5 reception rooms, large kitchen, 8 bedrooms with En Suites, indoor & outdoor pools, cinema and gym," Louis says.

"AmaZAYN, PhenomiNIALL, FabuLOUIS, ExtraordinHARRY and BrilLIAM!", Lexi shouts.

"Let us show you to your rooms...", Niall says. They carry our 2 suitcases up stairs.

"Faith, this is your room. Lexi is right next door. There is an en suite between the two of you that you both have access too," Harry says. I quietly look around. The room is stark white, with a large white canopied bed against the far wall and a large white dresser.

It looks very... sterile.

"Are you ok?", Niall asks. I shake my head.

"It's a lot to take in...", I whisper.

"It'll be fine Faith, you'll see..." Liam reassures, wrapping an arm around my shoulder and giving it a squeeze.

"Lexi come with me...I'll show you to your room," Harry offers, extending his hand to her. I watch smiling as they bound out the door.

"My girlfriend Eleanor, is coming over for dinner later. I can't wait for you to meet her," Louis says.

Zayn comes back in from outside. I hope he didn't wrap my car around a pole...

"Can I ask you guys a question?", I ask. "Why me, why us? You could of asked anyone. I'm sure you could of had a super model or someone more...appealing."

"Faith, have you seen yourself. You're beautiful...", Niall says, and I blush.

"I'm a train wreck...", I whisper.

"Come, we'll show you downstairs..." Louis says, leading me back downstairs and into the huge kitchen.

"Hungry?", Niall asks.

"Not for food. Please, please, please?", I beg, spotting the pot of brewed, piping hot coffee on the counter. The boys laugh.

"How many cups have you already had this morning?", Harry asks, setting the milk and sugar down in front of me.

"Plus?" Niall asks, and I bite my bottom lip to hold back my smile.

"5, but I'm sure that none of them will be as good as this one..."

"You have a problem..." Zayn chuckles.

"Yes, I do. Admitting it is half the battle right?"

"Junkie...", Niall laughs, setting the cup down in front of me and pouring.

"Angel... You've got wings, baby...", I say, taking a big drink.

"C'mon Lexi, I'll help you unpack," I say, as she grabs my hand and we both make our way back upstairs.

"Look mom, I have a stereo in my room!", Lexi says. "Can we listen while we unpack..."

"Sure we can..." I say, turning it on.

"Oh I love this song...", Lexi says, as she grabs my hand and we start dancing around her room.

"Sing mom..." and I do, for her I always do. I grab her hair brush, using it as my mic and jump on her bed, she follows me up and I sing to her as we jump up and down on her bed.

You Belong With Me - Taylor Swift

You're on the phone with your girlfriend ‒ she's upset,

She's going off about something that you said

'Cause she doesn't get your humour like I do.

I'm in the room ‒ it's a typical Tuesday night.

I'm listening to the kind of music she doesn't like.

And she'll never know your story like I do.

But she wears short skirts

I wear t-shirts

She's cheer captain

And I'm on the bleachers

Dreaming about the day when you wake up and find

That what you're looking for has been here the whole time.

If you could see

That I'm the one

Who understands you.

Been here all along.

So, why can't you see ‒

You belong with me,

You belong with me?

Walking the streets with you in your worn out jeans

I can't help thinking this is how it ought to be.

Laughing on a park bench thinking to myself,

"Hey, isn't this easy?"

And you've got a smile

That can light up this whole town.

I haven't seen it in awhile

Since she brought you down.

You say you're fine ‒ I know you better than that.

Hey, what you doing with a girl like that?

She wears high heels,

I wear sneakers.

She's cheer captain,

And I'm on the bleachers.

Dreaming about the day when you wake up and find

That what you're looking for has been here the whole time.

If you could see

That I'm the one

Who understands you,

Been here all along.

So, why can't you see ‒

You belong with me?

Standing by and waiting at your backdoor.

All this time how could you not know, baby ‒

You belong with me,

You belong with me?

Oh, I remember you were driving to my house

In the middle of the night.

I'm the one who makes you laugh

When you know you're 'bout to cry.

I know your favourite songs,

And you tell me about your dreams.

Think I know where you belong,

Think I know it's with me.

Can't you see

That I'm the one

Who understands you?

Been here all along.

So, why can't you see ‒

You belong with me?

Standing by and waiting at your backdoor.

All this time how could you not know, baby ‒

You belong with me,

You belong with me?

You belong with me.

Have you ever thought just maybe

You belong with me?

You belong with me

We collapse on the bed together and burst into a fit of giggles. "We belong together mom...", Lexi says.

"Yes we do Lexi. I love you..."

"I love you too mom..."

Zayn's POV

"Hey, mates...follow me... Quietly...", Liam says poking his head into the kitchen. We all follow him as he leads us upstairs. We can hear the music as soon as we get to the top of the stairs. Harry groans.

"Great, Taylor... I just can't seem to shake her...", he chuckles.

We tiptoe down the hall, the door is ajar, so we all peek in. Faith is singing as she and Lexi jump up and down on the bed. She's using a hair brush as a mic. We all stand there grinning, watching and listening until the song ends and they collapse on the bed, giggling.

Not once since I've been with Perrie have I ever wanted anyone else, but now this girl comes along and she's all I can think about. I just want to make her happy, protect her and take care of her.

Faith has too much baggage for me anyway. Niall and Harry can take her on. Like she said she's a train wreck. A beautiful, smart, funny, loving train wreck. Just the thought of her driving around in that unsafe pile of crap, pisses me off. I give my head a shake, Stop it Zayn, I scold myself. I'm happy with Perrie, she and I are going to get married someday.

"She has a really great voice..." Niall whispers, interrupting my inner conflict.

"They're done, let's go before they catch us," Harry says and we quietly make our way back downstairs.

We settle in the main living room and before long, Faith and Lexi join us. Lexi runs over and settles on the sofa between Liam and I. Faith lingers by the door. "We won't bite..." Niall says, smiling.

"Unless you want us too...", I chuckle. She blushes and drops her gaze to the floor.

"Do you enjoy making me uncomfortable?", she snaps, walking out of the room. Harry and Niall both get up to follow her, Harry slaps the back of my head as he walks by.

"Dick!" he snaps. I roll my eyes and rub my head, then follow them into the kitchen to apologize.

"Look Faith...", Harry says, crossing to a cupboard and opening the door. He and Niall spent an entire afternoon at a gourmet coffee shop and bought dozens of different kinds. She pulls one out smiling and spoons it into a cup.

"I'm sorry for making you uncomfortable. Sometimes I don't think before I speak," I say, settling on a stool. "What kind of coffee is that?"

"This isn't a coffee...This is a Mocha Chocolate Caramel Swirlachino...with extra whipped cream," she says, reading the label, crossing to the fridge, taking out the can of whipped cream and squirting a mountain of it in the cup. She takes a big gulp.

"That's disgusting...", Harry chuckles.

"If it was physically possible to 'make love' to a hot beverage...Then this. Would be. The one..." she says, gazing lovingly in her cup.

"So apparently, regular coffee has some competition now?" Niall laughs.

"Oh, No! This is just a fling. I'll spend the night with it, then when I see it in the morning with the caramel unswirled and the whipped cream unwhipped, I'll just say...buh bye baby..." she giggles, scrunching her nose. Oh man, I'm in trouble.

Simon's POV

"Good Day Lads!", I call, walking through the house.

"In here!", Liam calls from the living room. I walk in and find him and Louis watching Toy Story with a little girl.

"Whose this?", I ask.

"This is Alexis," Louis says. Niall, Harry, Zayn and a girl enter the room just then.

"You must be mom...", I say, extending my hand.

"Faith..." she says, smiling, accepting my hand. She's quite lovely. I can see why the boys are taken with her.

"So does everybody understand what's expected..." I ask, glancing at Alexis.

"Don't worry, we won't disappoint you. May I make a suggestion though?" Faith asks.

"What's that?"

"The house is lovely, but it doesn't really look like a 'family' lives here. It's clearly a bachelor pad..."

"It is a little cold..." I agree.

"Maybe if there were some toys around or some family photos...I mean, the point of this whole thing is to make us look like a real family, right?" she says.

"Great idea...", Harry says.

"This had better work,"

"We'll make sure they're ready. Piece of cake...", Liam answers.
