11. Chapter 11

Alexis's POV

I thought we were all having fun last night playing twister until mom got up and walked out of the living room. After she put me to bed last night I could hear her crying, again. I love it with the boys. I don't know why she doesn't. I wish I could make things better for her. I worry about her all the time. I love her so much. She deserves to be happy.

"All children for bus 304 please proceed to the front door?", the principal, announces over the loud speaker. I groan as I grab my school bag and jacket, and make my way to the front of the school. I hate the bus ride home. I have since the beginning of September. There's a group of about 4 or 5 boys who pick on me everyday. I was hoping that when we moved in with 'One Direction', I would have to take a different bus, but no such luck, it's still the same route. It always starts as soon as I step on the bus, and this morning was no different.

"Ha, there's little orphan Lexi!...", one kid shouts.

"I'm not an orphan! Your the stupid one, you don't even know what that means!", I shout!

"Well, we know that your parents aren't married!", another yells.

"She doesn't even have parents! Do you don't have a dad!", another yells.

"My mom told me you were illegitimate!"

Tears spill out over my hot cheeks as I continue to listen to their neverending insults. I just stare out the window, quiet, not giving them the satisfaction of seeing just how much they're words truly hurt me. Every afternoon it's the same, but I can't tell mom. She has enough to deal with.

"Maybe your mom would be better off without you!", one kid yells.

"SHUT UP!", I scream, not being able to take it anymore. I just want them to leave me alone. The bus slows to a stop, and I make my way up the aisle. Someone sticks their foot out and I trip, falling on my hands and knees. Everyone's laughing now as I struggle to my feet and push my way off the bus. "Where's mommy?", I cry stepping off the bus to find Zayn and Liam waiting for me. They both have hats and sunglasses on, so they won't be recognized.

"Alexis...What's wrong?", Liam asks, both he and Zayn look concerned.

"I'm not going to school anymore...", I cry.

"You're not?", asks Zayn, picking me up in his arms. Both of them are rubbing my back.

"No, I don't need school. It's stupid..."

"What's going on Lexi? I thought you liked school", Zayn asks.

"I did..until this year..." I answer.

"What's different this year?" they ask together.

"Some of the kids on the bus," I say, with dislike.

"You don't like them?" Zayn asks, watching my reaction.

"No one does. They're mean. They called me a 'little orphan Lexi' because I don't have a dad and they told me my mom would be better off without me...", I say, a flood of new tears spilling out eveywhere.

"They said WHAT?", Zayn says, shocked.

"Have you told your mom about this Lexi?", Liam asks.

"No, she has enough to deal with. She was crying again last night. This is all my fault. I should never have called that radio station. Maybe they're right, If it wasn't for me, dad wouldn't have left and mom wouldn't be so sad all the time...", I sob.

"Lexi, don't ever say that. Your mom loves you... You are a smart, funny, beautiful little girl. Liam and I are going to help you deal with those kids on the bus. I promise... ", Zayn says, hugging me tight.

"I promise too Lexi. Zayn's right... We'll figure out a way to make this better...!", Liam adds. Zayn carries me all the way down the long driveway, letting me cry on his shoulder.

"We have to tell your mom Lexi...", Zayn says, putting me down just before we get to the front door.

"Fine...", I whisper, still crying.

The three of us walk into the house together, "Hey beautiful girl, how was your da... What's wrong?", mom says, as she makes her way towards me.

"Faith, Lexi needs to tell you something...", Zayn says. Mom leads me into the living room and sits down on the sofa pulling me beside her. I tell her all about the bus rides home and what some of the kids say, and that sometimes they trip me or throw things at me. She sits quietly and listens to everything, tears trickling down her face.

"How long as this been going on?", she asks.

"Since the first day of school...", I answer.

"Why didn't you tell me when it first started, Lexi?"

"Because I-I didn't want to give you another reason to be sad...", I say.

"Lexi, I'm your mom. I'm the one who's supposed to take care of you. Not the other way around!"

"I don't want to be called a tattle tale mom!", I cry.

"Honey, tattling's different. You tattle when you want to get even with someone. Speaking up when someone is hurting you, is protecting yourself. I'm so sorry that this has been going on, and that you felt that you couldn't come to me, but believe me, it stops now... I'm going to call the principal right now and set up a meeting...", she says.

"No, that's just going to make things worse!", I shout.

"Lexi, that's how bully's work...they depend on kids to be to afraid to speak up, and that's how the bullying keeps going...", Zayn adds.

"Are you sure?", I ask, looking from mom to Zayn.

"We're positive...", mom says, running her hand across my cheek and kissing my forehead.

"I think I have an idea that may help too...", Zayn says, winking at me.

After mom calls the principal, I start to feel a bit better although I'm still a little worried about tomorrow. Zayn and Liam talk to the rest of the boys and they all promise me, that tomorrow would be a day no one would forget.

Mom let me pick what I wanted for supper tonight so we ordered pizza. I love pizza just about as much as mom loves her coffee. Then we all threw some blankets and pillows on the floor to watch a movie. All of us except Benny, who was spending the evening out with Simon. I wanted to watch 'Homeward Bound', but Liam wanted to watch Toy Story. I didn't want him to be disappointed so we all watched 'Toy Story'. My eyes started to get heavy about halfway through the movie.

"I'll carry her up...", Harry offers, rising to his feet.

"Can Zayn do it?", I ask, groggily. Mom looks at Harry with a worried look.

"Sure...", he says, sitting back down. Mom helps me put my pajamas on and brush my teeth before tucking me into bed.

"Good night beautiful girl. I'll love you forever, I'll like you for always, as long as I'm living, my baby you'll be...", she whispers giving me a kiss on the forehead. That's from my favourite book and I love it when she says it to me.

"Can Zayn tuck me in mom?", I ask. She looks at me quiet for a second before walking towards Zayn who is leaning against my door.

"She wants you to tuck her in...", Mom says. Zayn walks over to my bed and sits down next to me, he feels something under him, rises and pulls back the blankets. He digs out a little picture frame and looks at it for a minute.

"Who's this Lexi?", he asks.

"That's my dad... My real dad... Can I tell you a secret?", I answer, glancing back at the door to see where my mom is. I don't see her. I pat the side of my bed again so he sits back down. "Promise you won't tell my mom?"

"Cross my heart and hope to die!", he answers.

"My mom gives me a birthday present every year and tells me it's from my dad, but I know it's really from her..."

"How do you know that?", Zayn asks, his voice cracking a bit.

"I know I'm only 8, but I'm not stupid... My mom says it's from him so that I don't think he doesn't love me... But don't tell her I know, because it would make her feel real bad... Okay?"

"Okay", he answers.

"Lexi, can I tell you a secret?", he asks. My eyes widen with curiosity...

"Yes...", I say, excitedly.

"I really like you...and your mom...", he answers. I sit up in my bed and throw my arms around his neck, before settling sleepily back under my blankets.

"I really like you too, Zayn. Good night...", I whisper.

"Good Night Alexis..."

Zayn's POV

As I leave Lexi's room and shut the door. I see Faith standing in the hall right outside her door. "Can we go for a walk?", I ask. She shakes her head yes as we make our way back downstairs. I grab her jacket and put it around her shoulders before opening the door and stepping outside. It's cold. I can see my breath linger in the air around me.

"She's a smart kid...", I start.

"A little to smart sometimes...", Faith answers.

"Faith, you said on the radio that day, her dad wasn't ready to be a father. I don't mean to pry, but where is he exactly...", I ask.

"That's the 50 million dollar question, isn't it. Ben is somewhat of a con artist. He likes to hustle people for money playing pool. I thought he loved me. I was young, naive and he was this 'bad boy'. He left the day after Alexis was born. No goodbyes. No forwarding address. I was in the hospital waiting for him to come and pick us up, to bring us home... I was so stupid..."

"I'm sorry Faith", I say.

"Look Zayn, I heard what you said to her in there. You should know, Lexi really likes it here, she really likes you. I don't think you should encourage it. I mean, we'll be leaving soon and you have Perrie. I don't want her getting hurt..."

"Okay, if that's what you want...", I say.

"That's what I want...", she says, tears spilling out over her cheeks and heading back inside. I stand there numb. What the hell just happened?

Morning seems to come quickly the next day. Mom comes in my room, wakes me up and helps me to get ready for school. Much to my surprise, I am not taking the bus this morning. Instead we all pile into 2 cars and head for my school. My mom and I head straight for the principals office , while Zayn, Liam and the others all head for the gymnasium. I sit patiently outside the office until my mom comes out from her meeting. She wraps my hand in hers and leads me to the gym, we both take a seat on the floor close to the stage.

"What are we doing?", I ask.

"Could all teachers please bring your classes to the gymnasium for an assembly please...", I hear the principal announce as the overhead speaker crackles to life.

After all the classes arrive and settle, there is a buzz of excitement in the air.

"I heard someone say they saw 'One Direction' here!', someone says from behind me. I glance at my mom who squeezes my hand. Just then the principal takes her place on stage with a mic. "Good morning everyone. Today is a very important day. We have some guests in the school today who came to talk to us about something very important. Please put your hands together for 'One Direction'...", she says, as the stage curtains open up. Everyone cheers and claps.

"We're here to talk to you today about bullying...", Harry starts.

"Kids who are bullied are afraid to speak out because their afraid the bullying might get worse...", Louis continues.

"They think there's nothing they can do about it...", Liam adds.

"But if they stop and speak up, things can get alot better!", Niall says.

"Never keep bullying a secret, whether it's about you or a good friend. We'd like to sing a song and send it out to our very good friend, Alexis!", Zayn finishes, giving me a wink and a wave.

True Colors - Artists Against Bullying

You with the sad eyes

Don't be discouraged

Oh I realize

It's hard to take courage

In a world full of people

You can lose sight of it all

And the darkness inside you

Can make you feel so small

But I see your true colors

Shining through

I see your true colors

And that's why I love you

So don't be afraid to let them show

Your true colors

True colors are beautiful,

Like a rainbow

Show me a smile then,

Don't be unhappy, can't remember

When I last saw you laughing

If this world makes you crazy

And you've taken all you can bear

You call me up

Because you know I'll be there

And I'll see your true colors

Shining through

I see your true colors

And that's why I love you

So don't be afraid to let them show

Your true colors

True colors are beautiful,

Like a rainbow

And I'll see your true colors

Shining through

I see your true colors

And that's why I love you

So don't be afraid to let them show

Your true colors

True colors are beautiful,

Like a rainbow

As the classes all make their way back out of the gym, everyone is trying to talk to me all at once.

"We didn't know you knew 'One Direction'!", someone says.

"You're so lucky!", another voice shouts.

"What are they like?!", asks another. And for the first time since school started in September, I'm actually excited about it again.

"Thanks mom! I love you...", I whisper, before giving her a kiss and running off to join my classmates.
