"We can start treatment right away," said Dr. Davis. He looked at Mom for permission. She nodded.
"Am....am I... Am I going to die," I asked my voice shaking.
"Not if I can help it," Dr. Davis replied grimly.
I had beautiful, long, dark red hair. I took time to do it every day. I heard that chemo makes your hair fall out! HAHAHAHAHA. I started laughing. I just got diagnosed with cancer & I'm worrying about my hair falling out?! Mom looked tame strangely. Her eyes were filled with tears. No. I can't do this to her. I'm going to fight and I'm going to win. Mom won't be able to handle it if I lose. She'll have no one. She'll be all alone.
" Mom, I'm going to fight this battle. I'm going to graduate high school. I'm going to start a family. I won't die. I won't let cancer win," I said determinedly, finding my courage through my tears. Mom looked at me proudly as her tears began to fall. She ran over to me & hugged me tightly. I patted her back awkwardly.
"Ahem," Dr. Davis cleared his throat. " We should admit you to the hospital & begin chemo. "
The rest of the week was a blur of visitors, pain, chemo, & nausea.
"Ok, honey, this is the last dose for now, " said the nurse , her voice too cheerful to be real, as she set me up. The curtain next to me was draw & I didn't have anyone to talk to.
After I just sat there for a moment trying to gain back my strength. The curtain next to me opened & I came face to face to a strikingly handsome, blue eyed, bald,17yr old guy who just stared back at me.
" hey," he said.
"Hey," I answered shyly
"What's your name?"
"Luke...... I am your father," I said in my best Darth Vader voice, trying to keep a straight face.
"I don't think so," he replied grinning "uhh you want to go out to get coffee with me?"
That's how I met Luke. My companion in this mess.
