Remus cleared his throat, took a moment to glare at Sirius who had been about to make a comment, then started to read.
"Get the mail, Dudley," said Uncle Vernon from behind his paper.”
Quite a few people looked shocked here.
“He’s actually making-“, began Fred,
“-that fat lump-“, continued George,
“-Get the mail?”
Everyone winced as Molly shrieked at them to behave. Before she go on a rant however, Remus cut her off.
"Make Harry get it."
Ron sighed at shot a Harry a sympathetic look, “Bad luck mate”
"Get the mail, Harry."
"Make Dudley get it."
Sirius pulled a face at this, “Bet that didn’t go down well.”
Harry shook his head slightly and glanced at Sirius with wonder. He often wondered what Sirius’ childhood had been like.
"Poke him with your Smelting stick, Dudley."
Arthur frowned and shook his head sadly, “That’s no way to treat young Harry.”
“Harry dodged the Smelting stick and went to get the mail. Three things
lay on the doormat: a postcard from Uncle Vernon's sister Marge,”
Harry, Ron and Hermione shared a look at the name Marge and chuckled slightly, much to everyone’s confusion, apart from those who had been at the Ministry during the time of the event.
vacationing on the Isle of Wight, a brown envelope that looked like a
bill, and -- a letter for Harry.”
Ginny spoke up excitedly, “Harry! You just said that you didn’t get your letter!”
“Harry picked it up and stared at it, his heart twanging like a giant
elastic band. No one, ever, in his whole life, had written to him.”
Remus swallowed here and looked at the boy guiltily whilst the mood in the room suddenly dropped. Harry just sat still and tried not to glare at the sympathetic looks he was receiving.
“ Who would? He had no friends,”
Luna stared at Harry and spoke up, “It can be lonely without friends. I’m glad you’re still sane”
Harry smiled and rubbed his neck uncomfortably, “Um, thanks Luna?”
“no other relatives -- he didn't belong to the
library, so he'd never even got rude notes asking for books back. Yet
here it was, a letter, addressed so plainly there could be no mistake:
Mr. H. Potter
The Cupboard under the Stairs”
There were a few angry sniffs here. Draco and Severus glanced at each other, both annoyed to find that the other one was also feels sorry for the Potter boy. Severus was being reminded horribly of his own childhood.
“4 Privet Drive
Petunia narrowed her eyes, now all the freaks would know where she lived.
“The envelope was thick and heavy, made of yellowish parchment, and the
address was written in emerald-green ink. There was no stamp.
Turning the envelope over, his hand trembling, Harry saw a purple wax
seal bearing a coat of arms; a lion,”
All the Gryffindor’s sat up straight here and grinned slightly.
Luna sang out, “Wit beyond measure is man’s greatest treasure.”
“ a badger,”
Tonks looked around to see if anyone else was a Puff but was disappointed.
“and a snake”
Mad Eye grunted and Severus and Draco scowled as usual.
“surrounding a large letter H”
Everyone smiled here, all remembering their own time at Hogwarts.
"Hurry up, boy!" shouted Uncle Vernon from the kitchen. "What are you
doing, checking for letter bombs?" He chuckled at his own joke.”
Vernon chuckled loudly now as well but was quickly cut off with a snort from the twins.
“You think that’s funny? You should see some of our jokes…”, they then gave identical, evil grins, making everyone feel nervous. Although, they soon cowered under the glare that Molly shot them.
“Harry went back to the kitchen, still staring at his letter. He handed
Uncle Vernon the bill and the postcard, sat down, and slowly began to
open the yellow envelope.”
Hermione moaned, “Harry! Why did you open it in front of them?”
“Uncle Vernon ripped open the bill, snorted in disgust, and flipped over
"Marge's ill," he informed Aunt Petunia. "Ate a funny whelk. --."
"Dad!" said Dudley suddenly. "Dad, Harry's got something!"
A few people chose to glare at Dudley then, a voice sounding suspiciously Snape like said, “Brat”
“Harry was on the point of unfolding his letter, which was written on the
same heavy parchment as the envelope, when it was jerked sharply out of
his hand by Uncle Vernon.”
Ron scowled, “That was Harry’s you p-“
"That's mine!" said Harry, trying to snatch it back.
"Who'd be writing to you?" sneered Uncle Vernon, shaking the letter open
with one hand and glancing at it. His face went from red to green faster
than a set of traffic lights. And it didn't stop there. Within seconds
it was the grayish white of old porridge.”
There was a moment of silence before everyone started to laugh, even Dumbledore was chuckling slightly.
“Is he a human chameleon?”
Vernon was currently displaying an impressive show; his large face was currently turning a bright red.
"P-P-Petunia!" he gasped.”
Draco rolled his eyes and sneered, “Muggles, so dramatic”
Harry tried not to laugh and point out that Draco was the one being dramatic right now.
“Dudley tried to grab the letter to read it, but Uncle Vernon held it
high out of his reach. Aunt Petunia took it curiously and read the first
line. For a moment it looked as though she might faint. She clutched her
throat and made a choking noise.”
Draco raised an eyebrow as if to say, ‘See, I prove my point’
"Vernon! Oh my goodness -- Vernon!"
A few of the younger generation laughed as this detached line sounded rather funny coming out of Remus’ mouth, especially as he had used a slightly high pitched one.
“They stared at each other, seeming to have forgotten that Harry and
Dudley were still in the room. Dudley wasn't used to being ignored. He
gave his father a sharp tap on the head with his Smelting stick.”
“Disgraceful”, muttered Molly.
"I want to read that letter," he said loudly. “I want to read it," said
Harry furiously, "as it's mine."
Ron and Hermione leaned forward much to people’s confusion, including Harry’s. After getting a few puzzled looks Hermione quickly explained, “Harry’s temper, it’s always amusing when it’s not directed at you personally”
"Get out, both of you," croaked Uncle Vernon, stuffing the letter back
inside its envelope.
Harry didn't move.”
The tension in the room was high now, especially with the changeable pace that Remus was reading at.
“I WANT MY LETTER!" he shouted.”
Remus had also shouted this, so a few people clamped their hands over their ears and winced.
“Bloody hell”, said Ron, with an impressed look.
"Let me see it!" demanded Dudley.
"OUT!" roared Uncle Vernon, and he took both Harry and Dudley by the
scruffs of their necks and threw them into the hall,”
There was a cry of outrage; even Dumbledore had sat up slightly.
“That is blatant child abuse!” cried Sirius angrily.
Harry sighed and rubbed his eyes with his hands, “Can we just carry on reading please?”
Sirius frowned but Remus, who pitied Harry, carried on.
kitchen door behind them. Harry and Dudley promptly had a furious but
silent fight over who would listen at the keyhole;”
Fred and George broke the tension by cheering Harry on, but soon slumped down in defeat once the next line had been read.
Dudley grinned at Harry and smirked, who replied with an eye roll.
his glasses dangling from one ear, lay flat on his stomach to listen at
the crack between door and floor.”
Harry received many suspicious looks for this and he tried to look as innocent as possible, which failed.
“No wonder he knows so much when he shouldn’t”, grumbled Snape.
"Vernon," Aunt Petunia was saying in a quivering voice, "look at the
address -- how could they possibly know where he sleeps? You don't think
they're watching the house?"
Bill snorted loudly, “Like you’re worth out time.”
"Watching -- spying -- might be following us," muttered Uncle Vernon
Mad Eye nodded in approval and growled, “I might not like you Dursley, you great prune, but it’s good to be careful… CONSTANT VIGILANCE”
Everyone, apart from those who had been taught by him the previous year jumped and Tonks moaned whilst clutching her ears, “Blimey Mad Eye, do you have to?”
"But what should we do, Vernon? Should we write back? Tell them we don't
Harry could see Uncle Vernon's shiny black shoes pacing up and down the
"No," he said finally. "No, we'll ignore it. If they don't get an
answer... Yes, that's best... we won't do anything....”
Harry snorted at this and the others looked curiously at him but he waved them off, “You’ll see”
Dumbledore quietly smiled to himself and observed the boy sadly, oh how wrong he had been to leave him there. Imagine if he had turned out like Tom Riddle had.
"I'm not having one in the house, Petunia! Didn't we swear when we took
him in we'd stamp out that dangerous nonsense?"
Dumbledore sat up then, remembering his own childhood and glared at the Dursleys, “Stamp… it out”, he spoke quietly. He seemed to radiate power then, and the whole room grew colder as the Dursleys moved closer together. Everyone else was watching Dumbledore in awe and in slight fear; they had never seen him loose power before. After a moment, the old man took a deep breath and bowed his head, “My apologise Remus, do continue.”
Remus nodded and coughed the whole room silent, “Perhaps someone else would like to read?” He didn’t think he could cope reading anymore about Harry’s childhood.
No one spoke up until Neville hesitantly asked, “W-would anyone mind if I read?”
A.N: I know, another update! I thought that if I posted them in short chunks, I would get more done.
