“Melody, wake up…” a faint voice whispered. “Come on, Mel…”
I opened my eyes slowly, not sure what had happened. Luke was sitting next to me smoothing my hair back and holding my hand.
“What… happened?” I asked looking around the room. It was just us two.
“You blacked out and then started screaming.” He frowned.
“How long was I out for?”
“A few hours, the guys took your cousin to the airport. Apparently something happened on the farm and they needed her back home. She said to call her when you’re feeling better.” He said softly looking down at me.
“My eyes are burning…” I whined closing them.
“They’re bloodshot. They’ll go back to normal in a few days.” He soothed. “How’s your head feeling?”
“It’s fine now.” I sighed. “Luke, what happened to me?”
“Depends. What did you see?” he asked.
“I was in a room, like a hotel room. Louis and Harry was there and they had a tiff,” I said taking a deep breath. “about me and people Harry killed.”
Luke nodded thinking it over for a few minutes.
“Luke, I need answers.” I said sitting up a little fast.
“You have a connection with them. It’s difficult to explain, but Louis never left you. Do you remember the text where he told you not to scare him like that again?” when I nodded remembering the text he continued. “I never told any of them what happened. Louis was there with you in that bathroom when you… well, you know. That’s how he knew and he told the rest of the lads. Times when you felt so alone, Louis was there. Secretly watching, but he could never interact with you. Not because he didn’t want to, but because that isn’t how it works. What happened today was that the bond you have with Louis pulled you to him at that precise moment. I don’t know why, but it did.” He said taking a deep breath frowning.
“So it’s almost like a vision thing?” I asked confused.
“Yes, almost.” He nodded. “What I can’t understand is why he had you see this specific thing.”
“I don’t know. He did punch Harry when he said he was going to kill me like all the other girls and called me a slut.” I shrugged.
“Wait. Kill you like all the other girls?” he asked perking up.
“Did you see anything about these others? Like how they were killed?”
“I-I don’t… I can’t remember…” I said frowning.
“Think Melody. Try to remember.” He said. The tone of his voice was urgent.
“There was a… a news report on the TV. It showed a girl with her throat ripped out.” I said my eyes wide.
“We need to get you safe.” Luke said getting up from the chair he had been sitting on and pulling out his phone.
“What’s going on Luke?” I asked shaking.
“If I’m reading this right. Harry plans on sacrificing you. There’s a ritual that can be performed only once every thousand years that will grant the one who performs it more power than all of the Ellioud combined. It gives them the power to rule the world. Melody, we need to go. Now.” He said holding his hand out for me to take.
“He’s in Venice, Luke. There’s no way he’ll be able to get to me right now.” I said more than confused now.
“Taylor…” was all he said. That got my attention.
“She’s working with him, isn’t she…” I whispered. He nodded sternly taking my hand and pulling me towards the door.
His phone rang, but all he said when he answered was, “Airport. 30 minutes.”
We were out in the darkened streets and we were both on edge. Luke pulled me along the crowded plaza and streets looking around every corner we came to. It wasn't long until we reached the white wall of Lou’s house. We didn’t need to wait for security to check us in. The garden seemed eerie and every shadow seemed to hold a shape of the tall blonde headed girl that was now after me. The garden that had always comforted me, now set me on edge. We sped down the walkway and into the house.
“Something’s not right…” Luke said as we came to a standstill in the foyer.
“What is it Luke?” I whispered only to be shushed. A light flicked on in the hall causing a glow to come from the balcony. A shape that I knew all too well stood at the top of the stairs.
“Honey, where have you been?” I heard her snicker sarcastically.
“You have no business here, witch.” Luke said. His voice held so much power it gave me goosebumps.
“Oh, I think my boss will disagree with you.” She said snapping her fingers causing all the lights to flick on. That’s when I saw her again. Truly saw her for what she was. Her hair was wild, like flames around her head. Her eyes seemed to glow red with power as she descended the stairs.
“Leave now and you won’t have to die.” He said as a gleaming silver blade materialized from his jacket sleeve. I didn’t know what was going on.
“Shiny.” Taylor laughed approaching us.
“Back off.” He growled stepping in front of me.
“How funny. The little Ellioud thinks he can take me on. Guess again sweetheart.” And with a flick of her wrist Luke was sent flying into the wall. There was a loud crash and he was on the floor covered in building debris. He groaned holding his side as Taylor snickered and turned her attention back on me.
“So… all this time. You were plotting with Harry to kill me?” I asked glancing at Luke on the floor.
“Oh, no. This goes back to way before he came into the picture. Did you ever wonder why I acted the way I did back in school?” she snarled circling like a lioness circles her prey. “I was jealous of you. You had everything going for you! You were the star of every class not to mention the town! And then your dear mommy and daddy died. What a shame.” Her voice was dripping with sarcasm and rage.
“That was my gift. It’s not like it was my fa-”
“It wasn’t until they came to my house that one night. Told me my destiny. That night I knew that my time would come. My time to shine! To take back what is rightfully mine!” the lights flickered as her voice shook the house.
“Taylor, I never intentionally did anything to anger you! I’m sorry you were jealous of a kid who lost both her parents. Who had to move from everything she knew and struggle through the rest of her life. It’s not an experience I would wish unto anybody. Not even you!” I tried reasoning with her.
“Shut up! Your time has come.” She said baring her teeth, but before she could close the few feet between us, Luke was behind her holding her in a choke hold, the blade pressed to her neck.
“I think you meant yours.” He hissed and slit her throat. I stared in horror as the last of her lifeblood trickled down her body. She fell to the ground when Luke let her limp body go. He was breathing heavily and had Taylor’s blood on him. It was terrifying.
“Is… is she dead?” I tried.
“No. Only the vessel she possessed. She will return and when she does, she’ll be stronger.” He said kneeling beside the body and closing her eyes.
“What happens now?” I asked starting to feel nauseous.
“Head upstairs. Pack only the essentials. Clothes, ID, passports. Leave anything that can be replaced. Melody, you have to hurry.”
“What about the girl?” I asked looking at the broken girl on the floor.
“I’m taking care of it.” With that he picked it up and hasted out the back door.
I never stopped to think about how much my life would change when I packed my things. I never thought about what would happen to my cousins and if they were in danger. All that mattered was that I had to get out of this place and fast. The things I packed were practical. Jeans, sweats, the warmest jacket I owned, boots that I was able to run and walk long distances in. I was ready for anything.
“You ready to go?” Luke asked appearing in the doorway. I nodded when he came to take my duffel and gave the room an overall. I sighed looking at the wall that I had my friends sign and the pictures Lux had drawn me. The photos that were strewn across the room that held so many memories. I couldn’t take them all. So I took the one that meant the most. My mum and dad, grandparents and cousins were all sitting on the grass outside our old house. It was a reminder of a happier and easier time. A time where the only thing we had to worry about was what game we were going to play next.
“Melody, we have to go. Now.” Luke insisted.
“I’m coming.” Giving the room and all of the faces one last longing look, I grabbed the bag with my laptop and camera in it and walked out of what used to be my space of comfort.
I am really, really sorry for the massive waiting periods. I've been busy with my mum's things since she passed away and it's been truly difficult to write. I tried making this as good as possible, but please, those of you that are still reading, I absolutely adore you! Since it's Christmas time, my family is joining me for most of the holidays and there won't be time to write as much, but I'm trying to make my updates as good as possible. I've recently started a new story and it's called Can You Feel My Heart? It's a 5SOS :) You can find it on my profile as I'm publishing the first part today. Please show it some love :)
Merry Christmas and a happy New Year to everyone of you!
