"Holy VMA's!" Jane shrieked when I opened the front door.
"Jeez," I cringed. "It's just a house."
"Just a house... just a house?! This place is huge!" she ran into the living room jumping over the back of a couch.
"Please. Make yourself at home." I rolled my eyes dropping my bag on the floor by the couch. Luke followed us with Jane’s bags. He motioned for me to follow him as he ascended the stairs.
“I’ll be right back.” I mumbled as she started flipping through channels. Flashes of glowing blue eyes started coming back to me as I reached the top of the stairs. What was going on.. Luke was not from around here. And I mean from this realm. How did he catch me from that tree? The eyes? I’m thinking that meeting ending early was bullshit.
“Melody?” he had appeared in the doorway of my room giving me a worried look.
“Yeah?” I replied not sure if I wanted to join him or what his intentions were.
“I really need to talk to you.. in private.” He said motioning towards the room. That tiny voice in the back of my mind was screaming for me not to go in there, but shoving her aside and away from where I could hear her, I followed him inside and sat down on my bed when he told me to.
“Luke, what are you?” I asked hesitantly when he couldn’t find his words.
“What do you mean?” he asked bewildered.
“What. Are. You.” I repeated slowly. “I saw your eyes glowing, and there’s no way you could’ve caught me at Jake’s the other day or how you could’ve come home at precisely the time I was in the middle of… well, you know what..” I trailed of when I saw him flinch at the mention of the incident. He sighed and sat down in front of me taking my hands in his.
“What do you think I am?” he asked softly.
“I… I don’t know, Luke..” I said gazing at his eyes which was starting to take on that glowing effect again. “You’re not a werewolf and you’re not a vampire either. There’s enough proof of that and it’s just too big of a cliché, but what are you?”
“Melody, there’s things happening in this world that you just won’t understand. Not because you’re not smart enough, but because they’re things that no human can comprehend.” He said looking down at our hands.
“Please, just tell me what’s going on. Help me understand these things.” I whispered pleadingly on the verge of tears. I didn’t like it when people got this way around me. He sighed a deep, long sigh before he started.
“Have you ever heard of the Nephilim?” he asked.
“In the bible I know there is spoken of them, yes, but what they are I don’t know.” I answered truthfully.
“Nephilim are the offspring of the Sons of God and the Daughters of Men. There are a lot of different stories about them, Mel, but that is for a different day.” He said with a stone cold face. No emotion at all.
“Is that what you are? A Nephilim?” I asked.
“No,” he scoffed. “I am an Elioud. Offspring of the Nephilim and the Daughters of Men.”
“Elioud… Please explain.” I said frowning in frustration.
“We are children of the Nephilim. A part-angel hybrid race of our own. There isn’t much documented about us. Elouid is exceptional in ability and some have documented us as wicked, but I can assure you, that is one thing we are not.”
“So.. you’re an Elioud, who is part angel, has special abilities and are considered wicked.. Have I got it all?” I asked slowly, trying to remember these things.
“Some of it.” He nodded.
“I get the feeling you’re not telling me everything..”
“Because I’m not. There’s certain things you don’t need to know yet. I promise I’ll tell you and soon too, but just as soon as Jane leaves. Melody you can’t tell anyone about this. No one can know what I told you, you’re in enough trouble as is.” He rushed giving my hands a soft squeeze. “Promise me.”
“I-I promise..” I said nodding. I was in trouble?
“Do you have any other questions right now?” he asked getting up slowly.
“I have a lot of questions, Luke, but you won’t answer them right now.” I said looking up at him.
“I’m sorry, M.. soon you’ll have the answers. I promise.” He said with a sad smile and kissed the top of my head. I had an odd sensation run through me, but before I could think of what it was, it was gone again.
“MELODY!” I heard Jane shriek from downstairs.
“WHAT?!” I yelled back annoyed.
“LOU FREAKIN TEASDALE IS HERE!” I rolled my eyes knowing she’ll be a fangirling mess right now. I sighed and Luke shot me a worried glance.
“I promised I won’t tell, and I keep my promises.” He nodded and let me go down first.
“What were you two doing up there?” Jane asked when we got in the living room.
“Unpacking your stuff.” I grumbled at her. Lou was sitting on the couch next to Jane with what looked like to be a months’ worth of cookies and a few cards.
“Hey Mel, how are you feeling?” Lou asked when I finally sat down.
“I’m okay, thanks for asking Lou.” I said giving her a small smile.
“I’m glad to hear that.” She said letting out a breath.
“What do you have there?” I asked gesturing to the cookies and cards in her lap.
“Oh, Lux wanted to bake her auntie Mel some of her favourite cookies to make her feel better.” Lou smiled brightly. “And there’s a few cards from the studio. Some of the people you’ve worked with have really taken a liking to you. Lux drew you a picture too.” I couldn’t help but smile at the thought of people caring that much. I took the load off her and placed it on the coffee table.
“Thank you, Lou.” I said hugging her tight.
“Oh it’s nothing Mel.” She smiled and eyeballed Luke. “Aren’t you supposed to be recording vocals this week?”
“Just dropped them off.” He said holding his hands up in defence. Suddenly I was second guessing everything Luke is scheduled to be doing. Was he really recording vocals or was it just some cover up story? Was he really at a meeting that day? Why did he go to Jake’s? I sighed hoping I would get all the answers soon. I saw Jane looking at me and realised that I more than sighed. I whined.
“You okay there?” Lou chuckled.
“Uh.. yeah, I’m fine..” I stuttered embarrassed. They nodded and continued with whatever conversation they had been having. I wandered off into my thoughts again. Luke had said the Elioud were half angel. Angels have wings, right? So I’m guessing you can imagine the picture I had in my head of Luke right about now. Let me tell you, picturing Luke with snow white wings and one of those old-fashioned toga type things was just.. well.. it was bloody amazing! My imagination was running wild with the things I thought were accurate.
“Mel, why are you blushing?” Jane asked looking at me weirdly.
“No reason... please excuse me.” I mumbled getting up from the couch. Luke got up at the same time and we collided. This made us receive more looks of suspicion.
“Would you two chill out?” I huffed and walked upstairs rubbing my head. Luke didn’t follow. I heard the front door close and assumed he headed for the studio. I heard Jane’s phone ringing in one of her bags and practically ran to it. Her FaceTime… and it was Niall’s picture from when we were visiting that flashed on the screen. I narrowed my eyes and started pulling on the back of one of the piercings with my teeth as I accepted the call.
Niall’s face popped up and he seemed tired. He had bags forming under his eyes and his hair was a mess. It looked like he just woke up from a million yearlong nap. When he saw it was me on the receiving end his eyes widened. His face seemed to drain of all colour that was still left.
“Mel? Melody, is.. is that you?” he asked shocked.
“Niall Horan still knows my name?” I asked wanting to roll my eyes at him.
“What are you talking about? Of course I do!” he said taken aback. Good, I thought.
“What do you want from my cousin Niall?”
“I... I heard about the, uhm…” he started but couldn’t finish.
“The what? The suicide attempt?” I sighed. He nodded and looked to his right. That’s when I heard him. Louis. Niall was with Louis.
