Around 5 Sam woke her up saying she didn’t need to give Maggie a heart attack if she came to check on her. He helped her stumble through the window and collapse on the bed. Before drifting off again, Rae saw him pick up Nick to bring him to his room. Her last coherent thought was, he’d be a good brother.
Not wakeing up again till 12, she just laid there, basking in the sun from her open window. When she got out of bed, she looked in the mirror to see a person that looked like her but with racoon eyes and bedhead. Well, someone forgot to take her mascara off, Rae thought. Ugh, stop talking to yourself. Maybe she should be committed to an asylum.
Pretty much falling down the stairs, she was pouring herself some orange juice when a strained conversation floated into the kitchen that she obviously wasn’t supposed to hear. Rae was just about to go back her room, when she realized they were talking about her.
“She’s a danger to our family” a voice that sounded like Maggie said.
“Rae is family. She’s like a daughter to us, we can’t just throw her out”, said a hushed Damon.
“She’s your niece, not mine. I knew she would be trouble, coming from that sister of yours.”
“Maggie you can’t judge her for her mother’s mistakes.”
“I’m not. I’m just saying the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. And that certain tree had problems.”
Rae heard a door slam and guessed Damon had gone to work for the day. Maggie didn’t want her? She had nowhere to go, she was 15, she couldn’t even drive yet, or get a job. And she was creating tension in her aunt and Uncle’s marriage. Rae couldn’t breathe past the lump in her throat. The world became black around the edges, and she was suddenly falling towards the floor.
