32. 17 – The Folded Piece of Paper
Dear Mrs Midnight Rogue,
I haven’t ever written to you, so perhaps I’d do well in introducing myself. My name is Mr Jebediah Hands and I am your husband’s Quarter-Master on the deck of his ship, the Tyrant.
I have some good news and some bad news, madam.
The good news is that all six ships that were sent to attack your home and family have been sunk. There is no news of the new Earl of Richmond sending more of them to destroy you.
The bad news, however… There is no easy way of telling you this, madam. You understand that the sinking of six ships by a single brig is a serious feat. We do not live in a world of fairy-tales and happy endings. The Tyrant was sank with them. I managed to escape and survive with a few of the deck-hands, but there is no sign of Captain Thomas.
I fear that he may have gone down with his ship.
I know that this message may distress you, as we knew the Captain to be a good man – and he spoke of you and his children often.
We send our prayers and our sorries to you, in the hope that you may accept them.
To a merry life and a short one,
Mr Jebediah Hands.
