My eyes flutter open to the sight of a white wall in front of me. The sound of multiple hospital machines beeping fills my ears, and I look down at my arm to find several needles stuck in my arm. Holy shit. W-What the hell happened? I look over to the right of me to find a girl with long dark brown hair cascading down her shoulders, her eyes curiously studying me.
"Finally," the girl says before clucking her tongue and shifting in her chair. "You're awake."
I've seen this girl before, but I cannot put my finger on where I know her from. I look up at her, scanning her entire face. Those eyes. Her beautiful brown eyes. I-I've seen those eyes before. Her name is right on the tip of my tongu-
"Yes," she says while nodding her head. She lets out a small sigh before clasping her hands on her lap in front of her. "It's me Mari."
"W-What are you doing here?" I ask her while slightly raising my eyebrow. "You're supposed to hate me remember?"
She lets out a small chuckle at my remark and she even smiles. I just sit there completely shocked by her actions. Did she just laugh at me? And wait a minute...did she just smile at me? I guess I might have hit my head harder than I thought I did because I must be dreaming. Really, really dreaming.
Wake the hell up Mari.
As I mentally scold myself, Doniya's eyebrows wrinkle up in confusion. "What's wrong Mari?" she says before flashing a small smile at me once again.
What? Stop that Doniya. Stop playing with me.
C'MON MARI! WAKE THE HELL UP!
"It's just...you're acting weird," I reply honestly. Her eyes fill with curiosity as she continues to keep eye contact with me and I swallow nervously. "And well," I continue, scared that I may piss her off somehow, "I-I know that I'm not your favorite person in the world."
She blinks a couple times, as she begin to process what I had just said to her. She's still holding eye contact with me which is making me very nervous. Why the hell isn't she saying something back ye-
"I know," she replies, letting a large sigh escape her lips. "But...well...that's what I wanted to talk to you about." Suddenly she stands up and walks over to my bed. What's going on? "Is it okay if I sit down?" she asks, her eyes set on the edge of my hospital bed.
"Uhh...sure?" I say, somewhat unsure of what will happen next.
She slowly places her bottom on the edge of my bed and I watch her every move very closely. She turns her body so that she is facing me directly...and sadly I can no longer avert her gaze. "Well," she says before beginning to fumble with her fingers. "Let me begin by saying that...I-I uh...well I-I want to apologize Mari."
What? Seriously, this is no longer a game. Am I being pranked or some shit, because this is no longer funny!
I instantly realize that my mouth has formed into the perfect 'o' and I quickly close my mouth so that Doniya may continue. I quickly clear my throat in embarrassment.
"I never gave you a chance," she says, shifting her gaze down to her lap. Wait a minute? Is she ashamed? Holy crap. "I immediately hated you...because well," she continues, taking a deep breath. "my brother had never been as attracted to someone before until he set his eyes on you. And I think...I just took my role as a 'big sister' a little too seriously." A little too seriously? How about a lot too seriously. "I envied you because I felt like my brother loved you more than me. I was upset about how you could just walk right in and steal his heart right away from him." Those words leave her lips, leaving an almost pained look across her face. "And how he never really cared about me as much as he cared about you." Tears are now brimming her eyes and the very sight takes my breath away. This is unbelievable. She's about to cry. She's going to...cry.
"Do you honestly believe that Doniya?" I question, raising my eyebrow. "You really thought your brother could possibly love me more than he loves you?!" She nods her head slowly, almost as if she is now doubting her previous decision. Well...she should. "That's absolutely insane!" I say while making sure that my eyes stay locked with hers. She tries to avert my gaze a little, but then her eyes meet mine once again. "Zayn is your brother. You are his sister," I say before sniffling a little. "You are his blood. Therefore you will always be linked to him...and he will always have to love you." Her eyes brighten up at my words, and a small smile tugs at the corners of her mouth. "Unconditionally and no matter what. So don't ever think something like that anymore. I'm just some girl that he apparently likes a lot," I say, a small chuckle escaping my lips. "But you are basically all he has left. He loves you to death Doniya, and he is willing to do anything in order to ensure your happiness."
Tears are now streaming down Doniya's face and before I can even react to the situation, I feel someone's arms wrap tightly around my body. Wait a minute...is that Doniya hugging me? Is Doniya Malik seriously hugging me right now?!
"Thank you so much Mari!" she says through her tears. "Thank you so much for everything!" And now she's thanking me? What's next? Is she going to give me a million dollars? "Thank you for saving my brother," she says while still continuing to hug me. "You sacrificed your own life to save him. A-And I'm very grateful for that. You now have my uttermost respect."
As those words leave her mouth, I let her continue to hug me as I am still shocked about what is going on right now. Suddenly, I find myself wrapping my arms around her as well, actually enjoying the hug. It feels weird to be hugging her...but it's like a good weird. A good weird? I sound stupid.
Eventually she pulls away from me, her eye makeup streaming down her tear stained cheeks. A tear escapes my eye as we both just stare at each other in utter disbelief.
"D-Did that just really happen?" Doniya asks while still continuing to stare at me in disbelief.
"Yeah," I say while cracking a small smile, still dumbfounded. "I believe it actually did."
A small laugh comes from her as she wipes her face and I find myself laughing with her. "So, I suppose a truce is in order Mari," she says before flashing me a large grin.
"Yes. I guess it is."
She raises her hand out in front of her and she looks over at me. "Truce?"
My hand wraps around hers and we shake hands sealing the deal which I hope will mean a fresh start. "Truce."
As those words leave my mouth, I feel the awkwardness that used to be there between us just completely evaporate into nothing. I feel as if a weight has been lifted off my chest...a-and it feels good. Great. I feel like this is the start of something new between us...
"So," she says while clasping her hands together, the sound echoing throughout the room, "I suppose you want to know whats been happening these past couple of days."
"How long have I been unconscious?" I ask her curiously.
"Umm about 5 days now? They put you into a medically induced coma to relieve some of the pain of the injuries and to allow you to heal a little," she says while licking her lips. "I didn't know when or if you were gonna wake up."
"But everybody has been worried sick about you Mari," she continues while looking into my eyes seriously. "Absolutely sick," she mutters. "Do you remember what happened?"
I find myself trying to recall what happened that night a couple days ago, but a few images run across my mind. I just remember seeing Damon...and Z-Zayn...and Will. But I most definitely remember this like sharp burning feeling in my abdomen. Wait a minute...
I look down at my stomach and peel off the hospital blankets on top of me to get a closer look. Well shit. Perfectly placed over my abdomen is a huge white gauze pad with some bandage wrapped around my torso.
"So...I was shot?"
Doniya nods her head before raking her fingers through her hair. "Yup," she replies honestly, popping the 'p'. "That bastard Damon got you pretty good."
Speaking of Damon...
"Is he dead?"
"Who? Damon?" I nod my head at her question and she clears her throat. "Yeah. He's dead. He better be," she laughs. "That bastard is finally rotting in hell where he belongs."
He's dead. He's actually dead...
The fact that Damon is dead sends a wave of relief throughout my body and I feel like I can breathe again. I don't feel like someone is suffocating me any longer. I am free to move on my own again. I have my life back. I don't have to worry about running away from anyone, ever...ever again.
A knock on the door stops Doniya and I's conversation and walks in a man with a crisp, pleated black and white suit, his hair sleeked back in perfection.
"She's awake," the man says before flashing me a smile.
"Hey," Doniya says while looking over at the man and waving him over. "You might have to remind Mari who you are. She's kind of shaken up."
I look over at Doniya as she tells the man to treat me as if I am a mental patient...which I am not. I am perfectly fine...well except for the stitches on my stomach. But other than that, I'm perfectly fine.
"I'm Elijah," the man says as he walks closer to the side of my bed. "Elijah Mikaelson."
As soon as the man tells me his name, I instantly remember him. "Elijah," I say very softly. "How are you?"
His brown eyes peer into mine and he smirks a little. "Let's not worry about me love," he says, taking my hands into his. "I'm more concerned about you right now." His eyes scan my body up and down for any signs of anything off. "How are you?"
"Well," I say, my eyes locked with his. "I'm good. I'm just ready to go home and leave this place," I laugh nervously.
Both Doniya an Elijah flash me kind smiles and then Elijah continues to speak. "Well the doctor's said you might get to go home in a couple days," he says. "They just need to take a couple more evaluations on you and stuff. It's just provisional stuff. No biggy."
Oh. Well I guess that's good at least.
"Besides, Zayn wouldn't allow you to stay in here any longer than you had to. Believe me," Elijah says before sighing, "he's been bugging the doctors to let you out ever since you got here."
"Where is he?"
"Yes Zayn," I say while glancing towards the door.
"He's somewhere around here. He wouldn't leave your sight until we all finally encouraged him to go home and get some rest. He should be back here soo-"
And then right on cue, the perfectly tanned god-like man with black hair and a slight stubble walks into the room, a red plaid shirt and black jeans clothing his body.
I walk into the room to find both Elijah and Doniya circled around Mari's hospital bed. But the thing that immediately catches my eye is Mari, who is alive and alert in her bed. I quickly walk over to her, her eyes staying on me the entire time as I near her.
"Well," Elijah says before glancing down at his watch. "Looks like that's our cue to go Doniya."
Doniya flashes me a small smile as she stands up and begins to walk over to me. "Take it easy tiger," she whispers in my ear before laughing. I smirk at her, causing her to laugh even more and Mari just looks over at us, eyes filled with curiosity. I shake my head at Mari, assuring her that everything is okay.
Eventually, both Elijah and Doniya make their way out of the room, leaving both me and Mari in the room...alone. I watch as her eyes rake up and down my body, making it harder to resist the urge to just press my lips to her and never stop kissing her. She bites her lip innocently as my eyes peer into hers and I have to take a deep breath to prevent myself from acting impulsively. I manage to resist the urge...and I just sit on the edge of her bed, our eyes never leaving each other's.
"How are you?" I find myself asking, my hands unintentionally wrapping around her small ones. I rub my thumb across her fingers and she just smiles at me.
"Better now," she says before laughing. Oh my god, you don't know how much I've missed that beautiful laugh of hers. It's like music to my ears. Being confined in a cold basement in some psycho's house will do that to you... "And you?"
"I'm fine," I reply honestly. My body does not ache all over as it did when I first arrived to the hospital. Luckily, I didn't have any broken bones which surprised me. But my blood count was low and so was my nutrition levels. The first few days, I was just hooked up to those millions of hospital machines, the annoying ass beeping sound being the only thing I could hear. Pain meds and a couple of blood bags here and there moved throughout my body as my health began to get strong once again. I thought I was going to have to be admitted in the hospital for forever. But forever ended up being only 4 days. I was released a couple days ago. Thank God. "I'm just glad that you are alright babe."
A rosy blush appears on her cheeks and I smile at the very sight of it. She's just so adorable.
"How's everyone else?"
"They're good. Reyna has been sick lately. We don't know what's wrong with her. She's just been puking all the time." Mari's eyes fill with worry as those words leave my mouth and I clear my throat. "It's disgusting."
"Well she can't help it Zayn," Mari says while narrowing her eyes at me.
"I know, I know," I say before chuckling. "And Harry, he's actually recovering pretty well. He fractured his arm, so he will be walking around with a splint for a while. But whatever. He's still the same ole cheeky Harry that we all know an love."
A laugh escapes her lips as I tell her about Harry's condition. I know that Harry and her have grown close to each other and I'm glad that they have. Harry told me yesterday that he made sure that Mari stayed strong throughout the whole Damon situation. I hoped he would. I wanted him to help Mari cope with the sudden change in things.
"Well that's good."
She smiles at me once more, giving my hands a tight squeeze. "I'm so glad you are here," she says, a big smile planted on her lips. "I was worried."
"You were worried about me?" I asks while raising my eyebrow at her. "You were the one who saved my life remember? You should be worried about yourself." She looks down at our hands and I slip my hand out of hers, tilting her chin up with the tips of my fingers. As I stare into her eyes, the fact that she risked her life to save me still amazes me. "You know what?" I say, my face a few inches away from hers. "You are incredible."
"No I'm not," she responds, her eyes staring seriously into mine.
"Stop what?" A confused look spreads across her face and her eyebrow slightly raises.
"That," I say while looking at her face. Her usual smile is not on her face any longer, her lips in a straight line. "Stop bringing yourself down. I just gave you a compliment. Accept it."
Before she can even say something back, I press my lips somewhat hard onto hers, making any words in protest that were about to leave her mouth not even escape her lips. A warm feeling spreads throughout my body and I feel like everything is back together again. My hand falls down to cup her cheek, my other hand still laced with hers. Everything is perfect now. Her free hand wraps around my neck, pulling me closer to her body. I quickly move my lips away from hers to keep the situation from escalating any further...at least not yet. She groans in disappointment as I rest my forehead against hers. The sound of the monitors beeping fills my ears and I smirk.
"You are perfect, beautiful and amazing Mari," I say while rubbing her cheek with my thumb. "And I love you. I love you so much. I don't give a shit about what anyone else says. I love you...a-and you are perfect to me."
This time Mari's lips meet mine, sealing our lips once again. A smile is on both of our lips as we kiss and that makes the kiss so much better. Yes...we are technically making out in a hospital. And yes...I know this isn't the greatest place to make out. But I've missed this girl like crazy. It's been hell without waking up beside her and seeing her beautiful face every morning. Just not even being able to be in her presence killed me alone. But now, I'm back. I love this girl right here. I will love her until I take my last breath...
As our lips continue to move against each other's in complete sync, the sound of the rapid beeping of the hospital machines snaps me out of our world together. As soon as our lips part away from one another's the beeping dies down drastically. I cannot even hide the smirk that spreads across my lips. "Well," I say against her lips. "Let's see if we can make the machine break eh?"
A worried look spreads across Mari's face before she begins to speak. "I don't think that's a good idea Za-"
"Shhh," I say, cutting her off. Before she can even begin to say anything else, my lips meet hers again, completely silencing her. Her lips immediately begin to respond to mine...
The beeping gets more rapid and louder as the kiss begins to pick up.
This could be fun.
