I make my way down the wooden staircase back to the crowd of people. The crowd has surprisingly gotten smaller, but that does not effect the amount of stares and scoffs I receive. I could just flick everyone off this second right? But no. I don't want to cause any more problems tonight I guess since me picking a fight with Kol is a so-called "problem" according to Brian.
I walk towards the bar and rest my arms on the wooden surface of the bar counter before signaling for the bartender to come over to me.
"How may I help you?" the middle-aged man says before flashing me a smile. It's almost as if him smiling at me right now pains him. Well sir I would prefer you to not kill yourself trying to show some sort of kindness towards me. I don't need your kindness.
"Give me the strongest thing you've got," I mumble while looking him in the eyes.
"Coming right up," the man replies before walking away and beginning to make my drink. Suddenly I feel a hand on my shoulder and I look over to see Harry standing beside me with a smile on his face. I'm glad he doesn't have that typical smirk on his face like he usually does because I would be tempted to punch him.
"Hey," he says before sitting on the stool beside me. "Sooo how did everything go?" he asks curiously before sitting down beside me.
"Uhh well I don't know," I quickly reply. The bartender comes back with my drink in his hand and sets it down in front of me. He stares at me as if he expects me to say thank you or some shit but I just take a sip of my drink without even acknowledging his presence. He scoffs and mumbles something under his breath as he scurries off. "I kinda left."
"What do you mean you 'kinda left'?" he asks while raising his eyebrow in confusion. "What happened? Why did you leave?"
Because I was about to punch the bastard in his face for the way he talked to me as if I were his servant and because of the way he stared at Mari hungrily as if she was something he could eat. "I just couldn't stand it any longer. He was an ass just like Danielle had said," I force myself to say, instead of really saying what I want to say. Harry doesn't need to know the rest. I mean...I told him the truth...somewhat.
"Oh," Harry laughs before patting me on the back. "Well good. I wouldn't want you to punch him in the face or anything Zayn." I start to laugh along with him. If only he knew how close my fist was to connecting to the side of the bastard's face. I quickly down my drink and my throat begins to burn a little. And Harry looks over me nervously. "You okay there?" Harry asks before smiling at me.
I let out a small cough and am finally able to breathe again. I decide to get up so that I can go somewhere else. I don't know where at the moment, but I'm tired of all of this classical and formal shit. I've had enough of that crap to last me a lifetime.
"Wait where are you going?" Harry asks me as I stand up.
"Uhh, I don't know." And I really don't know. "I think I'm going to head outside for a bit?" I straighten up my suit jacket a little bit and set the now empty glass on the bar counter.
"Do you want me to come along?" he asks, his eyes lit up with excitement. "I could keep you company?"
The thought of Harry telling his crappy jokes runs through my mind and I quickly shake my head. "Uh no, no no," I say while continuing to shake my head. "I'm fine. You stay in here and-uh enjoy yourself."
"Oh," Harry says before pouting. "Okay well...see ya later then."
I nod my head and walk away from Harry, leaving him alone at the bar. I would stay with him...but I feel the need to leave this atmosphere. It's almost smuggling. That fucking Mozart, Beethoven or whatever the hell's playing is gonna be stuck in my head for forever. I guarantee it. I don't enjoy acting all classy and formal when in all actuality I'm far from being that. I don't like having to behave up to someone else's standards...
I begin to walk towards the back of the house where I hope to see a porch of some sort. I walk down a couple dark hallways and eventually see I small glint of light ahead. The light gets brighter and brighter as I continue to walk and I begin to see a gazebo in front of me with several small lights decorating the outside of it. It's...nice.
I step foot outside and the cool night air hits me, but it feels refreshing. I feel calmer and more relaxed than I did in there. Even though I probably shouldn't, I pull out a cigarette from my suit pocket along with a lighter. Oh well...fuck it. The lighter clicks as I run my thumb across the top of it and I quickly light the cigarette before placing it in between my lips. I inhale as slow as I can, trying to get the full effect of it before exhaling in the same manner. Damn I needed that.
I look at the area in front of me, just a big area of grass. I would have expected...I don't know...maybe a little bit of effort from Kol. But I guess he probably just said fuck it and left the backyard alone and just boring. Plain old boring.
I don't even what to think about what that little fucker is doing with Mari right now. I hope Mari is giving him a fucking mouthful and is threatening to pluck is eyeballs out of his head. I let out a small chuckle because I can just imagine Mari doing something like that. When it comes to creeps trying to check her out, she knows how to defend herself. She has enough balls to do it.
I flick my cigarette a little, letting the ashes hit the ground in little white clumps. Then I place the cigarette in between my lips again and inhale, letting the smoke enter my body freely. Suddenly I hear the faint sound of something nearby and it causes me to remove the cigarette from my mouth and actually listen.
Is that crying?
I listen again and I realize that the sound is indeed someone crying...wait no...more like sobbing. I rub the end of my cigarette on the floor of the gazebo and set it down. The sobbing continues as I stand up and begin to walk around the gazebo in search of the person. As I walk further and further away from the gazebo, the weeping gets louder. I'm nervous about what I'm going to see. I keep on looking around, expecting for something drastic...I don't know.
A few seconds later, I spot a girl in front of me with a black dress on, her knees pulled up to her chest. She's rocking back and forth in a fetal position and I'm sort of creeped out right now. But that doesn't stop me from quickly walking over to the poor girl and kneeling kneeling beside her.
"Hey," I say softly, "What happened? Are you alright?" I ask frantically as I scan her body up and down in search of any injuries or anything. That was stupid of me to ask if she is alright. "Obviously she's not Zayn!" I mentally yell at myself and I run a hand over my face in embarrassment because of the stupid question I just asked.
"N-No," she says in between her sobs. "I'm n-not okay."
The girl still has her face hidden as she continues to physically shake. I'm almost tempted to wrap my arms around the girl in an attempt to comfort her...but something stops me from doing so. "I don't think you should be out here by yourself," I say before quickly glancing around. It's pretty dark out here and the moonlight is the only source of light. "You know there are some cree-"
"I know," she replies very quickly, cutting me off from even finishing my sentence. "I-I just had to get away from my brother. It was becoming too much."
Wait a minute...
"Are you Rebekkah?" I ask while raising my eyebrow. "Kol's sister?"
That obviously caught the girl's attention because she finally looks up at me and I get to see what she looks like. The first thing I notice is her eyes...they are a bright green color. Wow. Her eyes are...beautiful.
"How did you know that?" she asks before wiping tears away from her tear strained cheeks. Her eyeliner has run down her cheeks and has made dark areas underneath her eyes. She sniffles a little before rubbing her hands together.
"Well I'm Zayn," I say before flashing her a soft smile. "Me and Kol are going to do business together for a little while."
Rebekkah scans my body up and down with her eyes and give me a small and barely visible grin. "Oh," she simply replies, sniffling. "Well...I guess it's nice to meet you Zayn." I take another good look at Rebekkah. She has high cheek bones with big, captivating green eyes. Her lips have red lipstick on them and she has short dark brown hair that frames her cheekbones. I believe she's at least 22 or 23. But she kind of has a babyish face. She looks nothing like her brother...or brothers I must say. She looks differently, the only thing they all share in common is their hair colors.
"Nice to meet you too Rebekkah," I say before flashing her a soft smile once again. A moment of silence passes between us and all I hear is Rebekkah continuing to sniffle and wiping tears away from her face."Now why were you crying?" I ask her while raising my eyebrow. Her eyes immediately shift to the grass beneath us and she clasps her hands in front of her. Obviously she doesn't want to talk about it...and I'm not going to make her either. "You don't have to tell m-"
"It's my brother Kol," she says, cutting me off. She's not looking me in the eyes anymore and that's bothering me a little. "My brother is making me do something awful," she says before beginning to mess with a strand of grass. "And...I don't have the guts to do it."
Rebekkah begins to pull clumps of grass out of the ground and she drops them beside her, some of the strands of glass falling on top of her black dress. "Well you don't have to do anything you don't want to do Rebekkah," I reply, trying to give her a few words of encouragement. "No one is forcing you to do anything. You get to decide what you want to do in life...not that assh-," I stop myself from calling Kol an asshole in respect for Rebekkah. She is his sister after all. "I mean Kol," I say before clearing my throat.
"But you don't understand Zayn," she continues. "I have to do it. I have to." Her eyes have met mine now and she is staring at me intensely, her eyes watering. She pushes her hair back away from her face now, showing off more of her...well attractive features.
"What is he trying to make you do?" I ask while looking over at her. She quickly shakes her head and tears begin to roll down her cheeks once again. This time she doesn't even attempt to wipe them away, she just continues to let them fall.
"I c-can't t-tell you," she sobs. "I'm sorry," she whispers. "I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry."
"Sorry for what?" I ask her curiously.
She completely ignores my question and she continues to glare at me. Seeing her cry is making my heart ache a little. I hate to see anyone cry. I guess that's one of my weaknesses.
"Please forgive me," she whispers before biting her lip and continuing to cry.
"Forgive you for wh-"
Suddenly I feel a sharp stabbing pain in my shoulder and I groan in pain. I turn around to find Kol standing over me with a needle in hand, a smirk on his lips.
"What the hell did you just do?" I ask furiously while staring at the little fucker. I try to stand up but I can't. For some reason I cannot move at all and my body suddenly becomes limp. I fall on my side to the ground. What the hell is going on?! I try to shout at Kol but nothing comes out. Suddenly I see both Kol and Rebekkah standing beside me. But now Rebekkah has a devious smirk on her face, just like her brother.
"You are such a fool," she says before throwing her head back in laughter. "You are so gullible Zayn. Quite pathetic actually."
That fucking bitch. She used me.
"To new opportunities," the asshole Kol says while smiling at me triumphantly.
My eyelids begin to grow heavier and heavier until I black out, the darkness ultimately consuming me...
I begin to walk down the dark hallway with Elijah trailing close behind me. I can feel his eyes staring at me from behind and it's making uncomfortable. "What? Do you have a staring problem like your asshole of your brother?" I growl through my teeth as my heels continue to click on the ground beneath me.
He begins to walk a little faster and soon he is standing beside me, looking at me curiously. "I assure you that I am nothing like my brother Mari," he says rather calmly. "I do not have the same intentions as he does either. I am actually ashamed of my brother's behavior towards you this evening. I apologize on his behalf."
"Don't apologize for him," I snap at him. If Kol wants to apologize, he needs to do it himself...not have someone else do all the work for him. "It's not your fault that you have a dick as a brother," I say before letting out a small laugh.
"Indeed," Elijah says and I swear that I see him smile just for a split second.
We finally make it to the end of the hallway where I turn the door knob so that I can exit the closed off area. As soon as I open the door, I am right back into the atmosphere filled with all the wealthy and powerful people of London. And I absolutely dread it. But anything is better than being in that room with Kol.
In front of me, I see Brian talking to some woman about something. But as I near him, his eyes meet mine and he looks at me confusedly. "Mari?" he asks. "Why are you out here? Aren't you suppose-"
"Long story," I say cutting him off, not wanting to talk about the situation with Kol at all. "But I think it's time for us to leave. Where's Zayn?" I ask before looking around the room to see if I spot his familiar black quiff of hair.
"Uhhh well he said he was leaving. I don't know where he went though." Surely he could not have went too far. And I'm pretty sure he would not leave here without me.
"Oh okay," I reply before scanning the room for him once more. I see a couple people with dark hair, but I automatically know that's not him. Zayn stands out in a crowd.
"I'll call his cellphone to tell him that you're looking for him okay?"
I nod my head before giving him a quick "thank you" and walking off. Suddenly I hear footsteps from behind me and I already know who it is behind me.
"Would you like some assistance?" Elijah says while walking beside me as we go down the steps.
"No. It's fi-"
"It's the least I could do Mari," he says. his face showing no emotion whatsoever. "This is my apology for Kol's actions and besides this house is rather large. You could get lost very easily."
He does have a point. This house is big...extremely big. Why do you need to have such a big house if only three people live here? I don't understand. It's wasted space.
"Okay fine," I reply as my feet hit the main floor.I start to look around for anyone familiar and I instantly spot Harry and his curly hair from across the way and I make my way over to him. I tap him on the shoulder and he spins around with a drink in hand.
"Heyyyy Mariiii," he slurs and he is obviously drunk.
"Hi," I say before looking at him in the eyes. "Have you seen Zayn?"
"Uh yeah," he says before taking another sip of his drink and coughing a little. "Uhhh he said he was going outside for a bit."
"Okay, thanks Harry," I say before turning away from him and beginning to walk away, but I stop. "Harry?" I ask while looking over at him. His green eyes meet mine and he raises his eyebrow. "Slow down on the drinks will ya?"
"You're not my mother Marie," he scoffs and then I flick him off.
"Just because you're drunk Harry doesn't mean that I can't punch your ass for calling me Marie." That's when I walk off thinking that I had the last word, but Harry disagrees.
"Okay Marie," he shouts before laughing.
I roll my eyes at him and continue to walk through the crowd towards the back of the house. Elijah makes his presence known beside me again by clearing his throat.
"Are all of your companions like that?" he asks while raising his eyebrow.
Companions? Who even uses that word? I would prefer the word "friends." That word is a little bit too formal for me.
"No Elijah," I simply reply laughing. "They just like to...well have fun some times."
"Oh," he quickly replies.
"Surely you were young once Elijah," I say while quickly glancing over at him. His solid facial structure, the way he talks and his posture make him look very mature. But I'm pretty sure that he is not that old at all. "How old are you Elijah?" I ask curiously.
"29," he simply replies as we continue to walk through the dark hallway that we just entered moments ago. Well...I mean he's not that old. He's just a few years older than me. Just a few...
"Oh," I say before another moment of silence passes between us. "Thank you for not being a douche like your brother," I say without thinking and instantly realize how extremely rude it is of me to say that. "I'm sorry I shouldn't hav-"
"It's fine Mari," he says, "I know that my brother can be well uh-" He stops mid-sentence as he thinks of words to say. Oh I've got a few. How about a dick, asshole, pig, cocky. "He can be very ignorant...and often inconsiderate. But keep in mind that he is my brother...and I used to be like him too surprisingly. But acting that way assures that you will be hated by most...and I decided a little while ago that I didn't want to live my life like that."
I can tell that this is something very personal to Elijah because now his face and physique has softened. I mean he looked very tense and stressed when I first met him. But not now. He's almost..well vulnerable.
"Well I'm glad you chose to be different than your brother Elijah," I say before flashing him a smile. "You seem like a genuinely nice person."
He quickly glances over at me and a small grin spreads across his lips. Wow I just made him smile...well kinda. "Why thank you Mari," he says. "I'm glad that I have made a good impression on you."
I smile at him back and that's when a gazebo appears right in front of me covered with small white lights. It's beautiful. It looks like something straight out of a movie.
"He has to be out here," Elijah says before steeping outside the doorway. "This is the only back exit there is to this house." I nod my head before following him and stepping outside. The cold air hits my arms and I shiver a little. Elijah notices this as he takes off his suit jacket and wraps it around my shoulders, leaving him in only a white button down shirt.
"Thank you," I say before flashing him a smile and he nods his head in response. My eyes glance around the small gala to see no signs of Zayn. "Could he be out there?" I ask Elijah while pointing at the vast amount of field in front of me filled with some trees.
"Maybe," Elijah replies. "Most likely not." Zayn is one of those people who does the unlikely. Suddenly I see a cigarette on the ground in front of me and I smile a little.
"He's out here Elijah," I say before picking it up and showing it to him. He nods his head and that is when I step off the gazebo to walk in the grass. My heels are getting messed up but I don't care. I can always get a new pair. Elijah follows closely behind me as I continue to walk further away from the gazebo. The moonlight catches my eye and it making everything out here glow. It's beautiful.
Suddenly something on the ground catches my eye-an envelope.
A fucking envelope.
"Shit, shit, shit!" I shout as I run towards the envelope. "NO! NO! NO!" I shout as tears begin to fill my eyes. "ZAYN!" I scream praying that I hear his voice respond to me. But I hear nothing except my voice echoing off of the trees nearby.
I lean over to pick up the envelope w-with...the gold trimming. I slowly open the envelope to find a white card. I open up the card, tears now rolling down my cheeks.
Sweetheart I told you I always get what I want didn't I? But I guess you have failed to realize that still...what a shame. I always have the upper hand Mari and I always win. I was waiting for you to come and kill me, but you took too long. So I made my move. It's your turn now sweetie. ~D
I quickly rip the card into shreds and let it fall to the ground in scraps. No. No. No.
I find myself falling to my knees and covering my face with my hands. I begin to shake uncontrollably and my heart begins to rip into separate pieces. "Mari?!" Elijah says frantically before wrapping his arms around my shoulders and pulling me towards him. The tears are falling profusely now and I find myself sitting up and crying into Elijah's jacket.
"H-He did it," I sob into Elijah's jacket. "H-He actually did it." Elijah gathers me into his arms before picking me up, carrying me bridal style. He begins to walk but I barely even realize it. All I can feel is my world crumbling around me.
He did it. Damon actually managed to do it... H-He has Zayn.
And he is now able to say that he's taken everything that I have ever cared about from me...first my parents, then Will, and now Z-Zayn.
This is the moment when I realize that he was right.
"I always win."
And sadly he can say that now. He won. H-He finally beat me...
