She was so tired. She hadn't had a full nights sleep in weeks. How could she when she was so worried about Helena, her cousin and best friend. Really, she was more like a sister to Amie. Aeschine Amie Darkholmes, who will not answer to anything other than Amie, was 15, getting ready to start her fifth year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, and for the first time in her life, an insomniac. Her cousin Helena was going through something, something big, and was refusing to talk to her. She couldn't quite figure it out, they never kept secrets from each other, they told each other everything. So logically, to Amie, it had to be something very big and either illegal or very embarrassing. Amie was going to go with embarrassing seeing as she couldn't believe Helena would get herself mixed up with the illegal sort. She thought back to the very unenlightening conversation she had with her cousin the night prior.
"You've been quite detached and distracted as of late, what's going on Helena?" Amie asked as her and Helena were sitting in her room one night.
Helena looked at her for a minute, obviously trying to think of a lie that would appease her cousin before relying "I'm just stressed about this year is all. It's nothing more than that." Amie had been bothering her for sometime about the way she'd been acting and it was starting to get on her nerves.
"Why on earth would you be stressed about school? It's not like it's our first year, you should be used to the monotony of it all by now."
"Mother and the others have decided to start testing fifth years on all we've learned since we started Hogwarts. They are calling them OWLs, or Ordinary Wizarding Level examinations. They're going to help us determine our career paths and what classes are relevant to that path. So we only take the classes we need our last two years." Helena said in a slightly condescending tone. Helena's mother was none other than Rowena Ravenclaw, one of the four founders of Hogwarts. Rowena and three others, Godric Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuff, and Salazar Slytherin, decided about fifteen years ago to start a school where all witches and wizards could fine tune their magical abilities.
"Wow! Okay, I guess that breaks the monotony. Oh my, now I'm nervous and stressed!" She started to fan herself as blood rushed to her face and chest. "Why are you just now telling me this? I should've been studying more this break!"
"I only found out myself two days ago and I have not seen you in three." She replied. "This is the first chance I've gotten."
"Oh. Well ok, I guess I forgive you." Amie said smiling sheepishly. Helena shot her a dirty look, then they both laughed. The night carried on, and Amie seemed to overlook the fact that if Helena had only found out two days ago, why had her strange behavior started weeks ago at the beginning of summer holiday.
Now that she was alone and unable to sleep, this fact seemed to smack her in the face. Why didn't she see through the distraction technique Helena had used on her? In her sudden stress about the tests, she had not been able to think clearly. Well, Helena may have won this round, but Amie was staying up and readying herself for the next round. She was going to pry the truth out of her cousin no matter what it took.
